Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about heat waves.
2
This is day one of a heat wave here in Ontario, Canada.
3
Jen and I are not looking forward to it.
4
In fact, I'm outside this morning at 10.30 a.m in the shade
5
because it's already 29 degrees and it's going to be 34 degrees today and 35 degrees tomorrow.
6
If you don't know what a heat wave is, a heat wave is when the temperature is in the mid-30s during the day
7
and in the mid-20s at night and that's in Celsius, by the way.
8
So what we're looking at is highs in the mid-30s during the day, highs in the mid-20s tonight, tomorrow, Thursday as well.
9
I think the heat wave is going to break.
10
When the heat wave breaks, it means it ends, sometime during market.
11
And unfortunately, when heat waves end, often there is a big storm as well.
12
So we really hope that either happens sooner or later.
13
But anyways, welcome to this English lesson about heat waves, an extended period of time two or three days or more where it's just really, really hot.
14
In this lesson, I'll teach you some more English phrases we use to talk about heat waves and hot weather.
15
So I'm sitting here in the shade because over there the sun is beating down.
16
In English, when you say the sun is beating down, you're describing a day where the sun is brighter than normal, or it seems brighter than normal, and it seems hotter than normal.
17
I'm sitting here because it's nice and cool.
18
I'm in in the shade of this tree.
19
If I went over there where the sun is beating down, I think I would overheat.
20
I think I would get really, really hot really quickly.
21
So I think I'm gonna stay here instead of over there where the sun is beating down.
22
Sometimes in English, we exaggerate a bit to describe the heat.
23
And there's one English phrase that I think is kind of funny and it's the phrase, it's so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.
24
Basically, what you're saying is if you got an egg and you cracked it onto the sidewalk, the egg would cook.
25
The egg would fry right there on the sidewalk.
26
Now, this sidewalk isn't actually that hot.
27
It is, again, an exaggeration, although I have seen people actually do it when it's like 37 or 40 degrees,
28
and if the sidewalk is black or a dark color and gets really, really hot.
29
But if you want to exaggerate a bit to describe the heat, you could say it's so hot out you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.
30
So there are two versions of this next phrase to describe a hot day.
31
The first one is to say, it's like an oven out there.
32
And the second one is to say, it's like an oven out here.
33
Now, as you can probably tell, it depends where you are standing.
34
If I come into the air conditioned house and it's 36 degrees Celsius outside, I could say to Jen, it's like an oven out there.
35
But if I'm outside and it's 36 degrees Celsius, I could say to Jen, if we're both outside, wow, it's like an oven out here.
36
So again, similar to frying the egg on the sidewalk, we talk about cooking because cooking involves a lot of heat.
37
So when you talk about the outdoors, sometimes you compare it to an oven, the appliance that you use to cook and bake things.
38
So right now, it's actually not too bad, but later today it's going to be like an oven out here.
39
So sometimes when it's really hot outside, it can also be very humid.
40
When we say it's humid, it means there's a lot of water vapor in the air.
41
There's a lot of moisture in the air and it makes it feel hotter than it actually is.
42
And we have a fun English phrase to describe this as well.
43
Sometimes we say it's like a sauna.
44
Now, if you don't know what a sauna is, a sauna is a room that people go in
45
and it's extra hot and there are like rocks in the middle
46
and they put water on the rocks to create water vapor and steam.
47
So the room is very steamy, it's very hot and it makes you sweat a lot.
48
I don't really like going in saunas.
49
Sometimes when you go to a hotel in Ontario, Canada, they might have a sauna, but I don't really enjoy them.
50
I know some people do, but when it's a day like this, when the temperature is really high and when the humidity is really high, sometimes we say, it's like a sauna.
51
So even though it's a heat wave, later today I will be working outside.
52
There are a lot of jobs that need to be done on the farm, so I will be working outside and I will definitely be sweating buckets.
53
When you say that you are sweating buckets, it means you are sweating a lot.
54
And I think you know what sweating is.
55
When it's hot out or when you exercise or when you work in hot weather, your body releases water from your skin and it's meant to help cool you off.
56
Although if it's really humid outside, it doesn't work perfectly.
57
But the English phrase we use, and it's kind of a humorous one, is to say, I'm sweating buckets.
58
It's so hot outside that I'm sweating buckets.
59
Literally saying that you're sweating so much you could fill a pail or a bucket with your sweat.
60
That's a little bit gross.
61
So later today, I'm gonna work outside, I'm going to drink a lot of water, and I'm definitely going to be sweating buckets.
62
So there are three words that I use quite regularly to describe hot weather, especially if I'm outside in the hot weather or working in the hot weather.
63
I would probably say it's brutal, the heat is brutal.
64
I might say the heat is unbearable, or I might say the heat is relentless.
65
So when we say it's brutal, when we say the heat is brutal, we mean it's like, it's forcefully hot.
66
It's so hot that you can't think about anything else except the fact
67
that you're hot and it's taking all of your energy.
68
When we say the heat is unbearable, it means that we can't stay out in it for very long.
69
We need to go in the shade and drink lots of water because the heat is unbearable.
70
It's something that's hard to bear.
71
And when we say It's relentless, it means it doesn't end.
72
Like it gets hot by 11 a.m and it will stay hot till like 10 or 11 o'clock at night.
73
It is relentless.
74
So three words we use to describe a hot day.
75
We might say it's brutal, the heat is brutal, the heat is unbearable, or the heat is relentless.
76
So as soon as you take an ice cube out of the freezer, it will start to melt.
77
It will turn from a solid to a liquid.
78
Instead of having an ice cube, you'll have water.
79
And we sometimes use this to describe a hot day as well by saying, I'm melting, or it's so hot outside, I'm melting.
80
Now, you're not literally melting, but if you think about an ice cube, as soon as it gets hot, it starts to turn to liquid, it turns to water.
81
When I'm outside, sometimes I feel like the heat is doing the same thing to me, and I might say, I'm melting.

Например: "We're in the middle of a heat wave" (Мы находимся в середине засухи).
  • The sun is beating down — солнце пылает ярко и жарко. Используйте, чтобы описать интенсивное солнце: "I'm staying in the shade because the sun is beating down" (Я остаюсь в тени, так как солнце пылает).
  • It's so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk —
  • It's like an oven out there/here — там/здесь как в печи. Зависит от места: "It's like an oven out there" (Там как в печи) — если вы внутри, а "It's like an oven out here" (Здесь как в печи) — если вы на улице.
  • It's like a sauna — как в сауне. Описывает жаркий и влажный воздух: "With high humidity, it's like a sauna today" (С высокой влажностью сегодня как в сауне).

Например, если на улице жарко, попробуйте сказать: "It's like a sauna today!"

Shadowing?
