1
Welcome back to the Tommy podcast where I believe a healthy life starts with a healthy mind.
2
Have you ever apologized for a mistake before you even made one?
3
Sorry if I messed this up, my English isn't very good, I'll probably fail.
4
Why do we do that?
5
Hi, this is Tommy and welcome to Wondering, my weekly podcast where I share stories, lessons and thoughts from everyday life.
6
This podcast actually started with a simple habit.
7
I've been journaling for years.
8
Every evening, I spend a few minutes reflecting on my day, what happened, who I met and the moments that meant something to me.
9
Looking back, I can clearly see how this small habit has transformed my life in a way that I can never imagine.
10
It has changed the way I think and live.
11
A few days ago, I had a thought.
12
What if I turned those journal entries into conversations?
13
A place where I could share my experiences, reflect on life together with you,
14
and maybe even help you practice your English along the way.
15
So here we are.
16
Today's topic is simple.
17
You can't win if you always expect yourself to lose.
18
This morning, one of our new team members introduced himself during a meeting.
19
After sharing a bit about himself, he smiled and said, I'm new.
20
I'll probably make a lot of mistakes.
21
I hope everybody can understand and support me.
22
Can you relate to that?
23
And yeah, everyone smiled back.
24
But that sentence stayed with me for the rest of the day.
25
Not because it was unusual, but because it was so normal.
26
Everybody said that.
27
I've had students say, Sorry, my English isn't very good.
28
My pronunciation is terrible.
29
Please understand if I make mistakes.
30
I've heard colleagues say, This tag looks impossible.
31
But I will try.
32
And if I'm being completely honest, I've said those things too.
33
Maybe you have as well.
34
Before we even started, we've already convinced ourselves that we're going to fail.
35
And here's the strange part.
36
Nothing bad has happened yet.
37
But somehow, we've already accepted defeat.
38
Why do we do this?
39
One reason is something psychologists call the negativity bias.
40
Our brains are wild to notice danger more quickly than opportunity.
41
Thousands of years ago, this helped humans survive.
42
Missing one opportunity wasn't as dangerous as ignoring one threat.
43
So even today, our minds naturally imagine what could go wrong before they imagine what could go right.
44
Sometimes, we even think that expecting the worst will soften the disappointment if it actually happens.
45
Or we apologize before we've even made a mistake because we hope people will be more forgiving if things don't go well.
46
It feels safer, but it comes with a hidden cost.
47
When you constantly expect failure, you slowly train your brain to believe that failure is more likely than success.
48
Your confidence drops, your motivation disappears, you hesitate, you play small,
49
and sometimes, without even realizing it, you start acting in ways that make failure more likely.
50
It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy.
51
I've experienced this myself.
52
Recently, I decided to spend more time rebuilding my offline English center.
53
Honestly, it felt risky.
54
There were so many uncertainties, new ideas, new systems, new challenges.
55
For a moment, I caught myself thinking, what if it doesn't work?
56
But then I stopped, and instead of asking what if I fail, I asked, what can I learn?
57
That tiny shift changed everything.
58
The beginning wasn't perfect, I made mistakes, like everybody.
59
I changed my plans, like several times.
60
Some ideas failed, others worked much better than expected.
61
But because I started, I learned.
62
Because I learned, things gradually became easier.
63
And I realized something.
64
If I had waited for the perfect plan, I would probably still be waiting today.
65
So how do we stop expecting to lose?
66
The first step is simply to catch yourself.
67
the moment your mind jumps to the worst possible outcome.
68
That's called catastrophizing.
69
For example, instead of thinking, I am definitely going to mess this up, try asking, what's the most realistic outcome?
70
Or simply, I'll figure it out.
71
It sounds small, but the words we repeat become the beliefs we carry.
72
The second step is to focus on what you can control.
73
We waste so much of our energy worrying about things that haven't happened yet.
74
Instead, ask yourself, what's one thing I can do today?
75
Maybe it's preparing a little better, practicing one more time, sending that email,
76
making that phone call, starting before you feel ready.
77
Because action builds confidence, waiting rarely does.
78
So here's the small challenge for you.
79
Today, pay attention to the way that you talk to yourself.
80
Every time you catch yourself saying, I can, I'll probably fail, this won't work.
81
Pause.
82
Take one breath.
83
Then replace it with, let's see what happens.
84
Or I'll learn something from this.
85
You don't have to expect perfection.
86
You don't have to expect success.
87
Just stop expecting failure.
88
Before we end today's episode, here's one thought to wander with.
89
If you keep rehearsing failure in your mind, don't be surprised when your confidence forgets how to perform.
90
Tomorrow morning, before your meeting, before your interview, before you speak English, before you take that first step towards something important,
91
ask yourself one simple question.
92
Am I preparing to succeed or am I preparing to fail?
93
Because your thoughts become your words.
94
Your words become your actions.
95
Your actions become your habits.
96
Your habits shape your character.
97
And eventually, your character shapes your destiny.
98
Thank you so much for spending these few minutes with me.
99
Until next time, keep wandering, keep learning.
100
And remember, you can't win if you always expect to lose.
101
Good day.

Об этом уроке

Вы практикуете английский с "THE TOMMY PODCAST [WANDERING SERIES - EP.01] - You Can't Win If You Always Expect to Lose" с помощью техники Shadowing — метода, разработанного для подготовки профессиональных переводчиков.

Слушайте каждое предложение, обращайте внимание на ударения и связывание звуков, затем повторяйте вслух уверенно. 15–30 минут ежедневной практики дадут заметные результаты.

Что такое техника Shadowing?
