Today, let's look at the connected sounds in a couple of phrases that all start with the word let.

Let me, let her, let him, let them.

All right, so the first rule here is that normally we have a glottal stop instead of a T before a consonant.

So let me would become let me.

Let me help you.

Let, right, I'm just cutting off the sound in my throat.

let me help you.

Now, this phrase let me is so common that what actually happens is we skip the glottal stop.

We just say let me, let me.

We go straight from eh to me, let me.

Let me help you, let me help you.

So if you're speaking quickly in English and you have this phrase let me, just delete the T.

When it's spoken quickly, we have nothing in place of that T.

And when it's spoken more slowly, we have a glottal stop instead.

Let me help you.

Next, let me in.

Let me in.

Again, the same rule.

Could be a glottal stop or just could be nothing.

Let me in.

We're also going to connect the vowels here.

Me in.

Let me in.

We don't put a glottal stop here.

We don't separate it.

We don't say, let me in, me in, right?

We don't want to separate those vowels.

We want to connect them with ya.

Let me in, let me in.

Now when we switch the pronoun, something else happens.

We say letter, letter, take a look, just like a letter you'd get in the mail.

We delete the h here.

We delete the h.

Now we change the t into a tap t.

Letter, just like the words butter, better, water, and so on.

In American English, this is a tap T.

When we delete the H, we have a vowel, and we do a tap T before a vowel.

Now, if I speak slowly, again, there's another pronunciation you can hear.

That's where we keep the H, let her, let her, right?

We keep the H and we turn the T into a glottal stop.

Because H or H is a consonant, so we apply the rule, right?

But in fast speech, this one takes over.

The tap T rule takes over here.

The same thing happens with him.

This I in him also kind of gets reduced.

It's kind of like we would write that maybe as apostrophe M.

Of course, if you do choose to say the T when you're speaking slowly, then that's totally fine, right?

That's fine, but it sounds very natural as a native speaker to delete the T if you have an H consonant afterward.
