Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel.
2
In this video we're going to talk about how you can practice English by yourself at home.
3
You don't need a speaking partner and you definitely don't need a native English speaker around you.
4
Loki is here with me as a guest of this video
5
because he will be in the video later and decided to join me right now for the intro as well.
6
There are a lot of English speaking activities you can do by yourself
7
but today specifically we're going to talk about how to narrate
8
or how to describe your day or every single action that you're taking.
9
For example, we're going to talk about my morning routine today.
10
First thing on the list, feeding this guy.
11
Okay, it's 8am, so it's time to feed our dog his breakfast.
12
Now I have to take his food out of the cupboard.
13
He has three types of food.
14
This is one of the types.
15
The second type of his food is a different type of kibbles.
16
I'm going to scoop out this much, about a third of this scoop, and then I'm going to pour this into his bowl.
17
And then for his third type of food, he gets wet food, which is in the fridge.
18
So I'm going to take this out of the fridge.
19
And now, time for the show.
20
We have to get this guy excited.
21
Do you want some food?
22
Yeah?
23
Do you want some food? if you wanna get a taste.
24
I also talk to our pets in English because why not?
25
Okay, you wanna sit?
26
Sit.
27
Good boy.
28
Good boy, wow, that's so delicious, right?
29
We're gonna put one full spoon into his bowl first and then we're gonna give him a little bit more.
30
Okay, Lucky, do you want some more?
31
Sit.
32
Bless you.
33
Sit.
34
Give me pa.
35
Thank you.
36
Give me pa.
37
Thank you okay one good boy Loki who's ready for some
38
food Loki are you ready for some food oh my goodness we have to do a little dance
39
so he gets excited yeah you excited enjoy okay now
40
that the dog has eaten he knows that it's time for his walk
41
so he is patiently waiting for us to get outside okay
42
so we have some oh my goodness we're going for a walk
43
so we're putting his leash on
44
and he likes to play like this he likes to nip us
45
and chew our hands every time we do this he wants the harness on
46
but then pretends that he doesn't his tail is wiggling
47
which means he's happy
48
and excited good boy a really good indicator of his mood yes
49
you ready to go are you ready to go okay
50
so i am now putting on my shoes my dirty white shoes
51
that are full of sand okay let's go okay so we got out of the house
52
When you go outside, feel free to describe your neighborhood, the houses, you don't have to talk out loud,
53
or you can have headphones in and pretend
54
that you're on the phone with someone and just describe what you see around you.
55
So like I said, sometimes when you want to talk about exactly what you're doing in the moment,
56
you're going to think that these are very, very simple words.
57
These are actions that you do every single day, but in the moment you don't have them as part of your active vocabulary.
58
So that's why every single time you do something, you're going to rotate these words and you're going to say them.
59
And every time you say them out loud or in your mind, you refresh them.
60
So the next time you actually need them, when you speak to someone, you will have them ready to go.
61
OK, so can you see over there those sun rays?
62
They're so beautiful.
63
And again, when you're out on your walk, make sure you describe what you see around you.
64
There is a beautiful bush that has blossomed into these little orange flowers.
65
So as you notice, Dan and I speak English to each other, what, 80 % of the time, I think?
66
Because sometimes it just, I don't know, the situation fits better.
67
But we also started doing that to just maintain our English level.
68
That's why we speak to Loki in English too, although his owners are also English speakers.
69
We speak Romanian, I think, when we want to speak really fast, right?
70
We want to speak in code when somebody wouldn't understand.
71
Yeah, yeah, yeah, or in code.
72
Okay, so this is a very quiet part of the neighborhood.
73
As you can see, I think this whole place is abandoned.
74
It looks like it.
75
I don't know.
76
Maybe it's not.
77
But this path takes you to the beach.
78
We're going to see a golf course, some cliffs, and really big waves, I'm guessing.
79
So again, see, I'm on a walk.
80
I'm just talking constantly about what I'm seeing, what I'm about to see,
81
why I'm here, what's going on around me.
82
That is the absolute best way to practice your passive vocabulary.
83
And your task is not just to listen to me and move on, okay?
84
Your task is to watch me, see how I'm doing it, and then the next time you're on a walk, you do it yourself.
85
Because I cannot put words into your brain, right?
86
You have to be the one rotating them in your own vocabulary bank.
87
We're going to go back home.
88
We're going to make some breakfast.
89
I'm going to show you how you can narrate the things you do during your breakfast.
90
If you are getting closer to some sort of intersection, you want to practice your direction giving, you know, go straight, go to the left,
91
go to the right, turn left, turn right.
92
As you say these things, you get more and more comfortable saying these exact expressions.
93
Okay so now we're walking on the side of the road so we have to be careful about the cars passing by.
94
He just stopped to sniff this one lamppost and he's been sniffing at it for like 30 seconds now.
95
He's profiling some dogs that peed there probably.
96
Look at his fluffy tail just standing in the wind.
97
Loki wants to cross so we are crossing.
98
Loki where are you going?
99
Loki is trying to decide which way to go.
100
Let's go boy.
101
So a lot of the times even expressions like let's go
102
or let's do this they have to come so naturally
103
so you don't have to think about them
104
when you say let's go right because you already have them available to you right away. So
105
if I say to my dog let's go let's go let's go let's go a million times a day
106
then this becomes kind of my perfected tongue twisters let's go let's go let's go let's go.
107
If you have expressions like we're not doing this right now, we're not doing this right now, I'm not doing this right now.
108
You want to say that also quickly
109
because there's no point in you stopping at every single expression you want to say to think about which word,
110
which tense, how do I conjugate this verb, which person, does it need an S,
111
does it not, and have all these unnecessary questions that slow you down.
112
But if you say these expressions over and over and over throughout your day, every day, then you get super comfortable with them.
113
Okay, let's go.
114
We're not doing this right now.
115
Do you see the ocean there?
116
Let's go, buddy.
117
So this is cobblestone in Portugal.
118
Most of their sidewalks are made of cobblestone like this.
119
And it's a little bit annoying to walk on because it's uneven.
120
You know, it's not flat.
121
It's uneven in so there's these corners sticking out
122
and you can trip over them and fall down especially
123
if they're wet so again i really want to emphasize this
124
and make sure
125
that you understand this is me showing you how to do it okay ultimately you are the one
126
that has to do it i'm just showing you
127
that it's very very simple and it's very accessible it's free and you get to practice english without a speaking partner,
128
without a native English speaker that most of you think you need in order to practice English, but as you can see, you don't.
129
And a lot of us have a very, very, very large passive vocabulary, which means that we understand a lot around us,
130
but we cannot speak the same way.
131
And that is simply because the words that you understand are not practiced enough, so they're not readily available to you.
132
You just kind of consume a lot and you understand a lot
133
but you don't get to practice that and this is a way of doing that.
134
Look at those clouds.
135
They look pretty scary.
136
Loki has very long fur as you can see and very dense so he does not get cold ever.
137
If anything this guy is probably always hot.
138
There's four or three golf courses in this area
139
and a lot of people who purchased these homes are also golf players
140
so when they come on vacation here they don't have to travel far to go play golf
141
and they also have their own homes here they all made friends here
142
so it's a really nice community of wealthy people Loki
143
and Dan are a little bit slower than me because Loki's stopping at every single bush and lamppost to sniff and pee.
144
So there's a tiny little green slash park area here and it's so pretty.
145
Look.
146
So Loki likes to go and check who else was here.
147
It's very well maintained.
148
See the grass is freshly cut and all these trees are neatly shaped.
149
So we're not allowed to go on private properties.
150
Obviously sometimes they're like right next to the street
151
so we have to be careful about that but this I believe is public.
152
So Loki let's go.
153
Good boy Loki.
154
Good boy.
155
He's so beautiful.
156
The wind is getting stronger for sure.
157
It's 17 degrees but it feels warm.
158
Like I'm overdressed right now.
159
Dan is underdressed.
160
I think I always carry an extra jacket just in case he gets really cold.
161
I can give him my jacket.
162
okay so we are approaching look how blue
163
that water is surprisingly this house is super modern do you see that's the pathway we're going to take
164
and look at those massive agave plants look at
165
that water this is crazy and look how big these plants are this could poke an eye in a second
166
So this rope over here is to prevent us from going forward because these hills are unstable.
167
Look how crazy the sky looks.
168
And all the way there, there are a few golf courses.
169
And these are different hotels, different beach properties.
170
Also, it's been really windy this whole walk.
171
And I got this new mic from Rode.
172
I'm gonna see at home how well it picks up the sound
173
but it's so windy I really hope you guys can hear me
174
so we're pet sitting here in this small community in Portugal that's why we have Loki the husky with us
175
and this is where we come for a walk
176
and then on sunny days we go down to the beach actually
177
but right now I think the water is getting a little bit too close to the shore
178
so we're just gonna stay up here on the cliff uh this is the atlantic ocean
179
and is very turbulent right now
180
because i'm guessing there's some sort of um storm somewhere i don't know
181
and the ground is wet here
182
because i think there's a stream coming from somewhere it's always wet in this portion of the walk
183
so if you have an area somewhere around your house where you can just walk
184
and be by yourself and just speak as much as you can about everything.
185
Oh my god, it's so windy.
186
This is the perfect opportunity because you need to put yourself in a position where
187
you could imitate speaking to somebody, you know?
188
Recording yourself is another great way of doing that because then you can go home and watch the way you speak.
189
I know it's very uncomfortable and awkward at first
190
but you get used to it and then you can analyze your speech
191
and improve and notice your melody your tone your rhythm connected speech is very important
192
so highly recommend so this used to be a boardwalk
193
that would go all the way down but I think there was a landslide
194
and a piece of it fell so you can only go
195
that far and that's it maybe we can we need to stop look how beautiful the beach is
196
so sometimes we go all the way down there
197
when the water is a little bit further away look at those waves
198
and the foam it's
199
so windy like it's hard for me to stand look at the horizon line
200
that is the horizon see how the green of the water
201
and the blue of the sky merge together and there's
202
that like darker line at the bottom i think dan is giving Loki some water.
203
Loki some water.
204
Good boy.
205
We got a container from home and a bottle of water because he gets a little thirsty on walks.
206
He's fine.
207
We don't have to give it to him but he appreciates it when we do.
208
He'll go find any puddle and drink from it but this guy is drinking filtered water or boiled water all the time.
209
Okay so we are on our way back but it's starting to rain so we're just going to run for it.
210
Let's go.
211
Okay we're back from our walk.
212
It's raining outside and we're gonna make some breakfast and I'm going to describe everything I'm doing.
213
So I'm gonna make a smoothie bowl.
214
I have my blender cup.
215
Is this a blender cup?
216
I guess it is.
217
I'm going to use a little bit of my leftover chia pudding.
218
We're gonna use some chocolate pea protein powder, some bananas, an apple, what else?
219
Half of this beautiful mango and I have some dates soaking in water here.
220
What else?
221
Peanut butter and some almond milk.
222
Okay so I'm gonna peel the banana, I'm gonna break it into small pieces and drop it into the blender cup.
223
I just washed this apple and I'm probably going to use only half of it.
224
So I'm going to cut it in half and then, well, this is not really half.
225
I'm gonna cut a little bit more and then I'm just going to slice it in the cup as well.
226
I did just find this piece of apple that was in my fridge.
227
So I'm going to add that in there too.
228
Nothing is going to waste in this house.
229
I'm going to take the dates out of the water and I'm gonna squeeze them a little bit.
230
Ew, that's gross and put them into the blender.
231
I have a little piece of a lemon.
232
I would say about a quarter of a lemon.
233
I'm going to squeeze it into the mix.
234
Then I'm going to wash this mango as well.
235
And I'm going to slice it in half.
236
Look at this.
237
It's so beautiful.
238
Oh, it smells so good.
239
I don't think it's very ripe.
240
Usually it's a lot more yellow, but it is what it is.
241
Oh, look.
242
Oh my God.
243
It's so juicy.
244
My favorite part, because it's so sweet
245
and I cannot just throw it out mango is one of my favorite fruit
246
because it's so flavorful and aromatic okay this is what we have
247
so far look how beautiful this mix is next
248
we're going to add our protein powder
249
i have a very fine pea protein powder chocolate flavored we're going to do one scoop
250
and another scoop the leftover chia seed pudding, one tablespoon of peanut butter, and then a little bit of almond milk.
251
I'm almost out of this one so I have a backup.
252
This is the one we use for coffee.
253
Okay so this is what you're doing.
254
You're just talking about what you're doing, what you're looking at, everything.
255
I'm going to pour some milk and some more milk into this and then we go blend.
256
Okay very important thing put your lid on first before
257
you put this thing on the machine okay on the blender
258
because you never know how that thing is going to turn on
259
and then it's going to be all over your walls
260
and ceiling so okay this is secured it's not moving
261
so we're gonna place it on the blender we're gonna make sure it clicks
262
so it's safe and secure and then we blend
263
sometimes if there's anything stuck on the walls of the cup you want to go in
264
and scrape it off protein powder or peanut butter could get stuck on the walls
265
so you just scrape it off
266
and push it into the smoothie
267
it's also always good to keep a hand on the lid just in case
268
it flies off I'm also in somebody else's home so I don't really know exactly how all the appliances work you know.
269
Okay I think we're done now it's time to plate our smoothie bowls.
270
I'm going to pour my smoothie into a bowl.
271
It's really good.
272
I want to garnish it with something so let's see what we can find.
273
Okay we're gonna use some pecans so I'm just going to crush a few pecans on top of the smoothie.
274
I'm just crushing them with my fingers
275
and then i'm going to add a little bit of hemp
276
hearts just a sprinkle although i do like hemp hearts i would eat them by the spoon
277
and then just a little sprinkle of chia seeds just for the color
278
because typically you'd want to soak them in water okay
279
and then i just want to be fancy so i'm going to do a little garnish with
280
the mango we have to eat this mango
281
this is the fancy garnish that I should hey at least I washed it
282
so the English lesson continues
283
I'm taking the mango out of this food bowl your bowl is intact hold on let me wash it that's
284
so funny okay and then I'm gonna take some mango
285
and put it on top of the smoothie bowl just a little bit of color nothing too crazy
286
this is a good example of how sometimes you just have to speak english in very unpredictable situations
287
and you have to keep going you know you can't just stop
288
and switch to your native language you just have to keep going
289
it's pretty cute right compared to this one breakfast is ready do you want a coffee
290
i already have my coffee but dan is going to have another one.
291
Okay so if you want to narrate how you're making your coffee you can also do
292
that even if it's as simple as making an espresso.
293
So I'm taking the carton out of the rack and I'm taking a pod oh I'm so clumsy today.
294
I'm taking a pod out and I am going to insert it into the pod slot.
295
Boom just like that.
296
Turn the machine on and then I'm going to make sure
297
that the machine has enough water over here
298
which I don't think it does
299
so I'm going to add a little bit more water
300
then I'm going to put a cup underneath the coffee dispenser here
301
and I'm just going to click on this little screen lungo
302
because that's what we like to drink I'm going to press play
303
yummy the smell is amazing Loki where are you going in the rain do you like the rain
304
Oh my goodness, do you want to come inside, boy?
305
Come in.
306
Good boy, Loki, good boy.
307
Okay, but now you're soaking wet.
308
Oh my goodness, you're so wet.
309
Good boy, Loki.
310
Good boy.
311
The tricky part about this activity and why it's so useful is
312
that at the first glance or when you first hear about it, you think it's very simple.
313
It's very easy.
314
It's like talking about your day -to -day life, talking about eating and drinking and brushing your teeth could be simple enough, right?
315
But the second you start actually describing what you're doing in as much detail as possible,
316
you realize that you actually understand a lot more than what you can use,
317
which means that your passive vocabulary is a lot larger than your active vocabulary.
318
You understand a lot around you, you consume a lot of English, but you don't produce enough English.
319
I want you to keep in mind three things.
320
Number one, this method is meant to help you gain confidence with the knowledge you already have
321
and show you the areas
322
that you need to improve number two
323
you will be making a lot of mistakes nobody's there to correct you there's no teacher around you
324
and that's okay
325
and that's what this activity is supposed to be we're not learning grammar right
326
now we're not trying to perfect our grammar we're trying to produce english
327
and practice the expressions and the words that you already have in your mind as a passive vocabulary.
328
And number three, a lot of the times you will not know the exact word that you need in the moment.
329
Okay.
330
And that's fine.
331
What you need to do is not freeze and not stop trying to remember that perfect exact word.
332
What you got to do is just continue describing the word.
333
If you forget the word, say what it does.
334
If you don't know what the word is, describe what it does or what it looks like.
335
You're such a good boy.
336
You like the massage?
337
It's so good.
338
Yeah, I like it too.
339
And that's it, you guys.
340
This is how you practice English by yourself.
341
I'm going to be doing more of this kind of video, so if you want to keep watching them,
342
keep learning how you can practice English by yourself, make sure you subscribe, and I will see you next time.
343
Bye!
