The link is in the Rory, it's bucketing down here in Moscow.
23
Yeah, it's pretty bad here as well.
Ừ, tình hình ở đây cũng khá tệ thật.
24
It's almost like it's raining cats and dogs.
25
Shall we talk about cats and dogs or the weather?
26
I think we should talk about the weather.
27
Let's talk about the weather!
Thời tiết thế nào rồi nhỉ?
28
What's the weather usually like in your hometown?
29
Well, right now it's pretty dreary, I'd say.
Chà, tôi phải nói là bây giờ mọi thứ khá là u ám.
30
We're moving from, well, we're moving from, what, summer into autumn.
Chúng ta đang chuyển từ, à, chúng ta đang chuyển từ cái gì nhỉ, mùa hè sang mùa thu.
31
We're actually in the midst of autumn now.
Thực ra bây giờ chúng ta đang ở giữa mùa thu rồi.
32
So the climate is getting progressively colder and damper as the days go by.
33
What's your favourite weather?
34
I think that depends on the circumstances, doesn't it?
35
If I'm inside and the heating is on and there's like torrential rain outside, then I get quite a cozy feeling and obviously I'd want to stay indoors.
36
On the other hand, obviously if it's scorching outside then I'd rather be out there getting a tan and sunbathing.
37
Do you like the weather in your hometown?
38
Usually.
Thường thì vậy.
39
Actually, we're supposed to be the sunniest city in Scotland, which sounds like something of an oxymoron, doesn't it?
40
We clearly do get our fair share of cloudless days, but usually in the summer.
41
Right now it's not at its best.
42
Do you like wet weather?
43
Well, like I said, only if I'm indoors.
44
I got caught in a cloudburst the other day and it looked, well, and I looked like a drowned rat, as did everyone else around me.
45
That was not entertaining in the slightest.
Chuyện đó chẳng hề thú vị chút nào.
46
Do you prefer wet, hot or dry weather?
Bạn thích thời tiết ẩm ướt, nóng bức hay khô hanh hơn?
47
I definitely have a preference for hot weather.
Tôi chắc chắn thích thời tiết nóng hơn.
48
You can be outside, get vitamin D from the sun, which is good for your skin and your bones, and it's just a better look all around.
49
This is of course only of the humidity as though, because otherwise I think, well I can and I think other people do feel lethargic and ill.
50
What do you do in hot weather?
51
Well, assuming it's not a school day, I go out with my friends for walks along the beach
52
or sit on the decking and soak up the sun while reading.
53
I'm short of a heat wave, though.
54
That's unlikely at the moment.
55
But if that happened, then it would be like stay indoors and vegetate.
56
Rory, thank you so much for your answers.
57
Do you know that there's a technical term for a sunny, warm day which follows two rainy days?
58
Is it nice?
59
No, it's called Monday.
60
It's a joke!
61
Yeah, dear listener, I know that it's quite silly, but hopefully you just smiled and tolerated.
62
Horrid jokes.
63
listener, feel free to go and listen to the other episode about the weather.
64
But the weather is a current topic in the IELTS speaking exam and it's going to be there,
65
well, until January 2022, when they're going to add new topics.
66
And maybe the weather will stay, we don't know.
67
So Rory, you said that it's pretty dreary.
68
Dreary weather.
69
Yeah, dreary.
70
It's grey, it's dark, it's wet, it's not nice.
71
It's dreary.
72
Yeah, so instead of saying bad weather, you can say dreary weather.
73
Or you can also say grim.
74
Can you say grim?
75
Well, yeah, you could say it's pretty grim outside.
76
Or gloomy or nasty.
77
Yeah, really good examples.
78
Can you say it's a dreary weather with an article?
79
It's a dreary weather?
80
No, you have to say it's dreary weather.
81
Or the weather is dreary.
82
Weather is uncountable, but it's not something that you can have an article with.
83
Exactly.
84
We do say "I have a good time", but we say "it's dreary weather".
85
Or you can say "it's pretty dreary".
86
You also said "damp".
87
Cold and damp.
88
Colder and damper.
89
Yeah, you said the climate is getting progressively colder and damper.
90
Damper.
91
But that's just another way of saying it's getting worse or it's not getting better.
92
So if something is happening progressively, it's sort of like it's increasing over time.
93
It doesn't mean it's getting better.
94
Usually people hear the word progress and they're like, woohoo, progress.
95
But no, if something is happening progressively, it just means it's expanding over time.
96
Mhm.
97
And damper is like wet, but it's a negative word, like damp weather.
98
Well, when we talk about weather, it's usually quite negative, but you can have a damp cloth, you put a damp compress on a wound,
99
but we're not talking about injuries right now, we're talking about the weather.
100
So, damp just means there's a lot of moisture, not just like rain in the air, but moisture on the surfaces of things, for example.
101
Yeah, for example, it was a damp morning.
102
So, kind of wet, but not pleasant. or comfortable.
103
So a bit negative.
104
Then you mentioned torrential rain.
105
If there is torrential rain outside.
106
Yes, but torrential rain is just like, well, if you think about the word torrent, it means a lot of water coming down in one direction.
107
So torrential rain is a lot of rain coming down very, very quickly.
108
So imagine monsoon in India, for example.
109
when it's just like this.
110
- It's like a shower.
111
- Okay.
112
But not a shower that you usually have a shower, right?
113
Just shower like a rain.
114
In Thailand, they have horizontal rain.
115
So if you're from Thailand, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
116
Horizontal rain when, you know, it's sunny outside, then bam, this is like rain happens.
117
horizontally.
118
Also, we mentioned, I said at the very beginning of the episode, it's bucketing down.
119
Yes.
120
So that means, well, it's torrential rain.
121
That means there's lots of it.
122
Mm -hmm.
123
And you said raining cats and dogs.
124
Yes.
125
I think we've talked about it before, but do people usually say that?
126
Like, do you friends in Scotland?
127
No, it's a cliché.
128
People only say if it's ironic, but I wanted to get it in because we were arguing about which coincidence to have at the start of the podcast.
129
And I thought raining cats and dogs was a good one.
130
But you said no, because it wasn't realistic and it's a cliché.
131
But I was right.
132
Yeah.
133
Oh, you're always right, Rory.
134
Scottish right.
135
Okay, but to be more natural you can use "It's Bucketing Down" or usually "It Buckets Down" where I live, for example.
136
So, if there is torrential rain, Rory gets quite a cozy feeling.
137
Well, if you live in a place without terrible weather though, are there alternatives that we could use?
138
You can say "I really enjoy dry weather".
139
And it hardly ever rains.
140
Or there is hardly ever any torrential rain.
141
There is minimal precipitation.
142
Oh, precipitation.
143
It's like water falling from the sky. Is it?
144
- Yeah.
145
- No. - Precipitation.
146
It's like all the rain that falls down.
147
It's not just rain though, it's to do with water in general.
148
Anyway, talk about precipitation.
149
It's a great word.
150
Precipitation, water that falls from the clouds towards the ground, especially as rain or snow.
151
Hail and sleet are types of precipitation.
152
Yeah, it's not just about the rain then, it's about everything.
153
Yeah, but it's like a specialized word, but it's like a very high level, really specific.
154
So if you can pronounce it, do you listen?
155
Come on.
156
Precipitation.
157
Precipitation.
158
There's very little precipitation where I live.
159
And then you can say it's scorching, it's very hot, it's scorching outside.
160
Yes.
161
And if it's extra.. well, scorching is just a really high temperature, but if you have a very high temperature for a prolonged period of time,
162
then it will be a heat wave.
163
Oh yes.
164
People die in heat waves.
165
I didn't realize that until a few years ago.
166
Oh.
167
Apparently it's very common.
168
Well, people die if it's freezing cold, if it's scorching, if it's a heat wave.
169
But as someone who is from Scotland, which is not exactly known for its scorching weather, I don't really experience this.
170
You said that you do get our.. we do get our fair share of cloudless days.
171
So there's a couple of things here.
172
To get your fair share of something is, well, to get what you deserve, basically.
173
Or if you get more than your fair share of something, you get more than you think you deserve.
174
Cloudless days are days without clouds.
175
but instead of saying days without clouds we say cloudless days, cloudless skies, it's a cloudless evening, Are you having a cloudless day, Maria?
176
Not today.
177
It's been a bit crazy.
178
We had snow plus rain together and the sun at the same time for about 10 minutes.
179
Then blue sky, then gray sky.
180
So it's like an Irish weather.
181
It's like Irish weather.
182
Yeah, there's something interesting going on there.
183
Yeah, but in Scotland it's...
184
well, you don't have summer in Scotland.
185
Only maybe two days of summer?
186
One day of summer, Rory?
187
No, we have summer, thank you very much.
188
Three days of summer?
189
No, five?
190
Really?
191
No, do you know?
192
The word summer in Scotland, I think it doesn't exist.
193
Ha ha ha.
194
No, we have summer.
195
We had like 30 degrees the, well, not the other day, obviously, but we had 30 degrees Celsius in July and August.
196
How dare you?
197
Our weather is absolutely quality in the summer.
198
Right now it's not really nice.
199
It's dreary.
200
Dreary and grim.
201
Yeah, and then Rory told us a story.
202
Rory told us a story.
203
When he got caught in a cloud burst.
204
and looked like a drowned rat.
205
Do you have any pictures?
206
No, thank god.
207
So a cloudburst is when all of the water in a cloud comes down.
208
So it's like a shower, like a literal shower, not as in a small bit of rain.
209
It's like pouring down.
210
And if you look like a drowned rat, then you're very, very wet.
211
It's a simile.
212
Oh, nice.
213
That's a kind of idiomatic speech where you compare yourself to something and you say it's like...
214
Like a drowned rat.
215
Yes.
216
Oh god, yeah.
217
Can you imagine Rory looking like a drowned rat?
218
All wet and cold.
219
Oh, poor Rory. And small.
220
Oh.
221
Dear Listen, do you want to hug Rory and give him your warmth?
222
You can also say "I got soaked through"?
223
Yes, that's also something you could say instead of "I looked like a drowned rat"
224
if you wanted to keep coming back to this idea.
225
Rory definitely prefers hot weather.
226
So he can get out and get vitamin D from the sun together with the vitamin C by the sea.
227
Another joke for you.
228
And get a tan.
229
Get a tan.
230
Rory, do Scottish people, are they able to get tanned?
231
Most Scottish people can't.
232
I think I'm one of the few Scottish people that can actually tan.
233
Naturally, that is.
234
And when you go tanning, you get vitamin D.
235
And if you do not have sunny weather, or if you do have sunny weather, but there's lots of, like,
236
the humidity is high, so there's lots of moisture in the air.
237
then you can feel lethargic, which is like saying you feel tired.
238
It's like a medical word for being tired.
239
Yeah.
240
So when the weather is grey, it's grim, you say, yeah, I usually feel lethargic.
241
Lethargic.
242
Like having little energy, feeling unwilling or unable to do anything.
243
Like, oh, I was feeling tired and lethargic.
244
Do you, dear listener, do you feel lethargic when it's all...
245
gloomy and miserable and nasty.
246
If you do feel lethargic you should go to a sunny place and soak up the sun.
247
Yeah, I love this expression.
248
I enjoy warm weather, I enjoy sunny days to soak up the sun.
249
You can also soak up the atmosphere.
250
- Glory, you can go with "soak up", it's a phrasal verb!
251
- It is a phrasal verb, and if you like phrasal verbs, then you should check out our phrasal verbs course.
252
Success with IELTS .com /podcourses.
253
Did I get it right?
254
I think so.
255
Never mind.
256
Just look up Google podcourses, honestly.
257
Do you know, it's interesting, actually, because people send me messages every day saying they can't find things.
258
And I like I always just think because I take forever to reply to messages.
259
And if you aren't sure about where something is, please Google it first, because it's usually the top search result.
260
And it will save you waiting for an answer from Maria or myself or anyone else who's working with us.
261
Yeah, you can also go to successwithiELTS .com and you have all the information there, the links, and also there are the links to this episode.
262
So just do check them out.
263
And on our phrasal verbs course, we have more than, well, we have 15 lessons on different phrasal verbs.
264
So yeah, that's really useful for your speaking.
265
I think, Rory, we can wake you up in the middle of the night and ask you, Rory, phrasal verb course, and then you just tell us. about the Razorback course.
266
I can tell you everything you want to know about that course, but you'd find out more permanent information on the website, and it's all laid out nicely by the people who do our website.
267
Anyway, we've gone off on a tangent and we need to get back to talking about the weather.
268
So, we've got a list of words that we could have used, but I didn't.
269
However, they're all good for a band 9 score.
270
Let's talk about how to talk about good weather.
271
You can say I enjoy excellent weather.
272
Ideal.
273
The weather is usually lovely.
274
Ideal weather.
275
My ideal kind of weather, yeah.
276
If you don't want to sound so happy about your weather, you could say it's appalling weather, the weather is dreadful, it's a gloomy day,
277
it's a grim day, the weather is miserable, or it's nasty.
278
or dreary dreary weather yeah also you mentioned humidity right humidity the weather can also be humid
279
or muggy if the word is muggy.
280
It's usually muggy.
281
Yeah, although what does that mean?
282
When the weather is muggy, it is unpleasantly warm.
283
and the air contains a lot of water.
284
So it's similar to...
285
Does it contain a lot of water?
286
Water?
287
Water?
288
Water?
289
It contains a lot of water!
290
You got any water mate?
291
Yeah, so it's like sticky, humid, like it's unpleasant, so muggy.
292
Oh, it's a bit muggy here.
293
And if it's unpleasant, it could be unpleasant because it's unpredictable, so you don't know what to wear.
294
Yeah, you can say the weather is usually unpredictable here.
295
Unpredictable weather can be changeable.
296
It can be very harsh, very bad.
297
It can also be severe, severe winds.
298
Yeah.
299
Oh, we have harsh winters.
300
We have harsh winters in Russia.
301
Oh yeah, we do.
302
But we have mild winters in Scotland.
303
However, because we live next to the sea, it's changeable.
304
Yeah, mild climate, mild winters.
305
have this like thin layer of ice over everything.
306
It can also, on a subject of ice, it can be icy or it can be wintry.
307
Wintry weather.
308
Wintry like also cold, right?
309
Winter.
310
Wintry weather.
311
Also, you can say...
312
The question could be: "What do you usually do?" in hot weather, right?
313
And how can you use this expression "whatever the weather"?
314
Yes, so "whatever the weather" just means "regardless".
315
or the weather is irrelevant in the situation, you will always be doing something.
316
So whatever the weather, he swims every day.
317
Or he swims every day, whatever the weather.
318
You can move the position of the phrase.
319
When you want to know what the weather will be like, what do you watch or listen to?
320
The weather forecast!
321
Yeah!
322
Don't say the weather report.
323
Weather forecast.
324
Forecasting.
325
Forecast.
326
Forecast.
327
Yeah.
328
Do you believe the weather forecasts, Rory?
329
Absolutely not, but we live, where I live, we have what's called a microclimate, and It's actually its own weather system and its own climate.
330
So while the weather forecast will be right in general for the whole country, because we live in this microclimate, weather forecast can be completely unreliable.
331
Hmm.
332
But what's not reliable is the fact that we are at the end of the episode.
333
What else can you do in all weathers?
334
Oh, whatever the weather.
335
You could listen to our podcasts.
336
We have more than one.
337
This is the free one.
338
But if you are interested in speaking parts two and three, or if you're interested in writing, or if you're interested in improving your phrasal verbs,
339
we have everything you need.
340
Tell us more.
341
Yeah, we do have a writing podcast now.
342
In three episodes, we are talking about the essays.
343
graphs.
344
Yeah, I know.
345
Cool.
346
We give you all the structure, the words, what to do, strategies.
347
So do check them out.
348
The link is in the description. Have fun.
349
And as for the weather, we could all take a lesson from the weather.
350
It pays no attention to criticism.
351
This is my ending word for this episode.
352
Thank you very much for listening.
353
Bye.
354
Bye.
355
What's the weather usually like in your hometown?
356
Well, right now it's pretty dreary, I'd say.
357
We're moving from, well, we're moving from, what, summer into autumn.
358
We're actually in the midst of autumn now.
359
So the climate is getting progressively colder and damper as the days go by.
360
What's your favourite weather?
361
I think that depends on the circumstances, doesn't it?
362
If I'm inside and the heating is on and there's torrential rain outside, then I get quite a cosy feeling and obviously I'd want to stay indoors.
363
On the other hand, obviously if it's scorching outside, then I'd rather be out there getting a tan and sunbathing.
364
Do you like the weather in your hometown?
365
Usually.
366
Actually, we're supposed to be the sunniest city in Scotland, which sounds like something of an oxymoron, doesn't it?
367
We clearly do get our fair share of cloudless days, but usually in the summer.
368
Right now it's not at its best.
369
Do you like wet weather?
370
Well, like I said, only if I'm indoors.
371
I got caught in a cloudburst the other day and it looked, well, and I looked like a drowned rat, as did everyone else around me.
372
That was not entertaining in the slightest.
373
Do you prefer wet, hot or dry weather?
374
I definitely have a preference for hot weather.
375
You can be outside, get vitamin D from the sun, which is good for your skin and your bones, and it's just a better look all around.
376
This is of course only of the humidity as low, because otherwise I think, well I can, and I think other people do, feel lethargic and ill.
377
What do you do in hot weather?
378
Well, assuming it's not a school day, I go out with my friends for walks along the beach
379
or sit on the decking and soak up the sun while reading.
380
I'm short of a heat wave, though.
381
That's unlikely at the moment.
382
But if that happened, then it would be like stay indoors and vegetate.
