It's around 6 .20pm Eastern Daylight Time on Monday, July 27th, 2026.

Delta Airlines Flight 1568, operated by Boeing 737 -900ER, departs from Pittsburgh, bound for Atlanta.

Due to poor weather at Atlanta, the flight diverts to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Two hours and 50 minutes later, the aircraft departs for the final hop to Atlanta.

By the time the aircraft approaches Atlanta, the time is nearly 11pm local.

The crew and passengers are unaware of the dramatic sequence of events about to unfold.

Let's tune to Atlanta Tower on 1190 .1.

Tower Delta 1568 AJ.

Delta 1368, Atlanta Tower, number 268.

Wind 2906, clear to land number 2.

As Delta 1568 approaches runway 26R,

Delta Airlines flight 2472 is ready to depart to the north on the adjacent runway 26L.

This flight to Rochester, New York is operated by an Airbus A321.

Once the aircraft is lined up with the runway, Atlanta Tower clears them for takeoff.

The crew of Delta 1568 is concerned that the preceding aircraft will not clear the runway before they touch down.

They query the tower controller.

Keep it up through this one.

But it's too close for comfort.

The crew initiates the go -around.

Delta 1568 going around.

The tower controller is relieved from their position and the new controller gets up to speed with the traffic picture.

While all this has been going on, departures from runway 26L have been temporarily halted.

The aircraft is transferred to Atlanta Approach for resequencing.

While that happens, let's watch a replay.

The amber rings show a half -mile radius, and the red rings a quarter -mile.

Both crews received a TCAS resolution advisory.

When the onboard system detects an intruder will enter a predetermined envelope around the aircraft.

TCAS issues oral and visual vertical instructions to crews to assist in avoiding a collision.

These instructions must be followed, and they override ATC instructions.

During high -volume operations like those at Atlanta, call sign confusion and task saturation can quickly erode situational awareness.

This is why human factors is such an important consideration in aviation incidents.

This is where systems like TCAS can step in as a final safety net to ensure a catastrophic outcome is prevented.

Delta 1568 is resequenced and lands safely.

Shortly afterwards the FAA confirmed it had launched an investigation.
