86 ,400.
2
That's the same amount of time in seconds that everyone gets in a day.
3
That's the one fair thing.
4
Everyone gets the same day length, the same clock, the same deadlines.
5
Yet somehow, some students feel constantly behind, while others stay calm on top of work and still have time.
6
And it's not because they're smarter.
7
It's not even because they're more motivated.
8
It's because they simply know how to manage their time.
9
As a student, your time is the most limited, most valuable resource.
10
You can't add more of it.
11
You can only decide where it goes.
12
And so if you don't learn how to cramming and constant last minute panic.
13
And that's why time management isn't just a nice skill to have, it's the deciding factor between feeling in control and always feeling behind.
14
So in this video, I'm going to show you how to actually manage your time as a student in a way that works in real life, not just on paper.
15
Starting with the biggest mistake that students make about time management, most students think the problem is I don't have enough time, but that's just not a factually correct statement.
16
Everyone gets the same 24 hours.
17
So the difference is what you choose to spend that time on.
18
And once you shift that mindset, instead of I can't do anything some changes to lock in as a student.
19
Once you accept that, time management finally makes sense.
20
So, Let's get on to the main points.
21
Greg McCollum talks about this idea in Essentialism.
22
If everything is treated as important, you end up busy, stressed, and still behind.
23
That's exactly how most students live.
24
They wake up with 10 things that they should do and no idea what actually moves the needle.
25
So you bounce between tasks, feeling productive, but they get nothing meaningful done.
26
And this is the fake productivity trap.
27
This is a normal student day.
28
You reply to messages, you check your emails, you read some notes, you half start an assignment and a homework.
29
And by the end of the day, you It's because busyness is not progress.
30
Carl Newport puts this idea really simply in deep work.
31
Being busy is often just a substitute of actually doing the hard, important work.
32
Top students understand this early.
33
They don't try to do everything.
34
They try to do the right thing.
35
And so here's the rule that I want you to steal.
36
Every day has one main academic priority, not five.
37
Not a massive to do list.
38
One.
39
And it has to be something specific.
40
Bad priorities sound like this.
41
Revised biology, study maths, work on my essay.
42
Those are too vague.
43
Your brain doesn't know where to start, so it resists.
44
Good priorities sound like finish and mark 20 exam questions.
45
Write 300 words of my essay.
46
Memorize and test 25 flashcards.
47
Now your brain has a target.
48
When you're trying to manage your time by doing 10 different tasks or just being really busy, that's difficult.
49
But when you have a few clear things, when you increase efficiency, it's far easier to manage your time
50
because you suddenly have only one task to actually put into your day.
51
Your brain also hates ambiguity.
52
This is the science behind it.
53
When a task is vague, your brain treats it as infinite, overwhelming, never ending.
54
So it delays.
55
But when the task is clear and finite, your brain gets a sense of the time of progress which creates momentum.
56
James Clear explains this concept in Atomic Habits.
57
You don't succeed because of motivation, you succeed because your system tells you what to actually do next.
58
Clarity beats motivation every time.
59
And so right now you might be thinking though, "But what about all the other important stuff I need to do?
60
I can't condense everything that I need to do into one small task." Here's the answer and it's important.
61
Choosing a priority means you're accepting some things won't get done today.
62
And that's not failure, that's timetabling maturity.
63
Top students are comfortable saying that this matters more than that today.
64
Everyone and ends up doing nothing properly.
65
Start using those concepts.
66
you And you know how we talked about 86 ,400 at the very start of the video, right?
67
Actually, there's a slight asterisk on that.
68
And you might be thinking, like, oh, yes, of course you sleep for a third of your day.
69
Like, yeah, of course that.
70
Third of your day sleep, third of your day cooking, like, I don't know, another event on cleaning, eating, bathroom, etc. But actually, for most students, where is that time going?
71
It's not school.
72
It's not homework.
73
It's your attention.
74
Because time management isn't really about hours.
75
It's about how fragmented your focus is during those hours.
76
Your phone is the real villain.
77
Not only does it take away literally time, that's four hours less than hours that you have time to.
78
So obviously time management feels hard, because you have less hours to fit more stuff in.
79
So it's taking away hours, firstly.
80
It's also villainous in the sense that during the amount of hours you have, because your attention span's so cooked, it's fragmenting your focus.
81
You're not focused when you're studying with distractions.
82
You're just constantly resisting every notification, every vibration, every quick check.
83
Even if you don't touch it, a part of your brain is still paying attention to it.
84
There's literally a study that shows that if you keep your phone on your desk, your brain is still focused on it so you perform worse.
85
And that drains energy fast.
86
This is why students say "I studied for 3 hours but got nothing done.
87
You weren't studying for 3 hours, you were half studying." And so that's two ways in which your phone is bad for time management.
88
But just before we get onto how you can use your phone for good, if you're the kind of person who actually cares about what you're studying, not just the grades, this is worth listening to.
89
One of the best things that I did was joining Leafs online programs.
90
I took their mathematics of morality course last year as you can see, and it completely changed how I talk about my subjects.
91
Not just for my personal statement and uni applications, but how I think about impact in general.
92
These courses are for 15 -19 year olds, run by proper academic mentors, and they help you explore how your subject can be used to help others, which is exactly what top universities look for.
93
There's a sliding tuition scale with free access if you need it, so there's genuinely no downside to applying.
94
Check out the link in the description, but let's get back to those tips.
95
But let's talk about a way that you can use your phone for good in time management, and that's using a to -do list or calendar.
96
Managing your time simply means being more clear about things.
97
When you don't have a clear goal of what it is you want to get done on a day, how long tasks actually take within your day, then it's impossible to manage your time.
98
So starting with by blocking in non -negotiables, when you wake up, when you go to school, that's going to be blocked off.
99
You're going to start to see like what pockets of time you have left.
100
Within that, start splitting those up into like hours or 30 minutes and be like very specifically, I'm going to try get this done here.
101
Using Google Calendar, etc. to block out your time, say when you're going to do what.
102
But there's a slight caveat to this, right?
103
Like sure, it looks all cool on paper, but then once you start not following it, it's just a downward spiral from there, right?
104
Because like if a task takes slightly more time, it goes into the next block.
105
to -do list of all the things I want to get done during that day.
106
And then within the time that's remaining, what I find is I can kind of allocate nicely what it is that I need to do within each time block.
107
So whether you find managing time easier by using the Google Calendar method, or the slightly more flexible method of using the to -do list, both work.
108
But let's get on to the third and final really important piece, which is the wind condition.
109
Now, we're not talking about Clash Royale.
110
Managing your time.
111
Although a lot of students visualize that as like timetabling and like aestheticness, a lot of the time, it's making sure that you can actually get stuff done quicker, frees up literally more time, right?
112
You can't create time.
113
So this is like the next best step.
114
You're essentially creating time.
115
And so one of the worst reasons that study sessions take so long is simply because they don't have a wing condition.
116
Students sit down with no wing con.
117
They just sit and think, I'll study for a bit.
118
That's why studying feels endless heavy and it just takes up so much time.
119
Top students do the opposite.
120
They decide how long it should take.
121
This is also called Parkinson's law.
122
Your task fills up the time you give it.
123
When you don't give it a time, your task
124
okay i'm gonna give myself 30 minutes to do this right
125
so a win con is a clear measurable outcome for a session not revised chem not study bio
126
but finish and mark 20 exam questions test
127
and memorize 25 flashcards write 300 words
128
when you know what done looks like your brain relaxes
129
and that's a target
130
and an end once you have this win condition you contain
131
it you don't say i welcome this all evening you say
132
i have one block 45 to 90 minutes no multitasking
133
that block and clock since you've timed it it works for you not against you
134
and if you finish early you stop you take the win you more work.
135
This trains your brain to associate studying with completion.
136
not suffering and so that was a kind of unorthodox
137
but really useful way to manage your time as a student
138
time management is really about priority management set your priorities make study more efficient
139
and get rid of the stuff
140
that literally take up time in your day that's useless and
141
if you found this video useful you'll find the student service
142
from 10 times more useful than this as you can see
143
students have went from not knowing how to manage their time
144
to getting top grades knowing exactly what they need to do
145
and they've seen such drastic increases if you want to get degrees
146
that you deserve and you're an ambitious student you will need accountability and the resources student be first thing in the description.
147
As always, I'll see you in the next one.
