152
will not replace electro mechanical physical technology electrons will never replace atoms
153
and that's an advantage
154
that you have the work you know the domain expertise you have the craft
155
that is here it will remain here but you have to take advantage of this new technology.
156
This industrial revolution is so mighty, is so powerful, you don't have another chance.
157
Because you always, yeah.
158
Whether we have another chance or not, we should always assume we don't this transition is
159
so important you should combine your deep skills your deep expertise in the physical products in the electromechanical products
160
and combine it with artificial intelligence I would not be surprised
161
if currently most of the middle sides their challenges are reduction in labor
162
because people are getting old the craft of
163
that is captured in the knowledge the skills of the people are still are starting to get older
164
and older every generation take advantage of artificial intelligence let them codify let them program let them teach
165
this artificial intelligence and keep it here in germany right and let it re -engineer the chancellor's words
166
Chancellor's words re -engineer Germany.
167
This is your chance to do it.
168
Well.
169
I think it's become obvious prerequisites to scale industrial AI in Germany are here
170
and they are very promising and the opportunities related to it are impressive.
171
It will be key, of course, Chancellor, to bridge the gap between innovation and implementation in factories and in value chains.
172
Is a cooperation with NVIDIA a part of the plan to do so?
173
Yeah, sure.
174
And this is already happening.
175
And I would like to say
176
that I'm extremely grateful about what we have just heard from this business leader of the world in terms of AI.
177
So you are giving me and hopefully us a great optimism about our business model in Germany.
178
And you might know that I'm always insisting that we have to remain a country with manufacturing.
179
And we should never give up that.
180
And now we are seeing a great opportunity in combining our experiences with manufacturing and AI.
181
So if we are successful in bringing these two
182
I'm really very optimistic that Germany can be one of the most successful economies in the world.
183
Because we are already, we are still the third biggest economy in the world.
184
So thank you for telling us what the opportunity is and comparing us with others.
185
And I believe and I share your view
186
that the Americans made a big mistake in the world mistake to export their manufacturing.
187
And now they are faced with a very small successful but very small base industry.
188
And this is our advantage to have this broader access and broader approach to the future of our industry.
189
And look I'm a large American company and and we have incredible partnerships here in Germany for good reason.
190
It's good for us.
191
It's good for us.
192
Our partnership with Audi led to our partnership with Mercedes.
193
Our partnership with Mercedes led to our investment in robotics which led to our partnership with agile robots.
194
We just made an investment in them.
195
We made an investment.
196
Avelio's made an investment in Murilla made an investment in in reflex aerospace.
197
Last year we made investment in black forest labs.
198
Here in Germany you have deep science and technology and deep science
199
and math which are the fundamentals for manufacturing for the deep sciences for artificial intelligence.
200
And so there's so much there's so much technical expertise and there's so much deep science and deep math.
201
The one thing that you said also is
202
that you believed in a policy of advancing and encouraging AI startups or startups in general.
203
I think that's fantastic.
204
One of the things that I really love about the United States, of course, is that we constantly reinvigorate,
205
we constantly reinvent ourselves, and the way we do that is through all the entrepreneurs.
206
And so one of the things that I really love to see, we've invested tremendously in Germany.
207
In the last year, we've invested almost a billion dollars.
208
This week, we're investing in four new companies.
209
And so in a lot of ways, we are one of the largest VCs in Germany, because I believe in Germany.
210
And so for all of the other venture capitalists,
211
you better hurry, because otherwise I'm going to take all the good deals and I'm going to be rich.
212
And so the The important thing is
213
that the thing I want to recognize is that the science and technology capability of Germany is just second to none.
214
We have a thousand employees here.
215
We have a fantastic office here in Berlin.
216
Some of the fundamental inventions of our companies came from our office here in Berlin in Germany.
217
And so this is you want to invest here.
218
Incredible people.
219
May I ask a question?
220
Could you give us an advice on regulation?
221
We are having a very strong debate in Brussels on the European level compared to the US.
222
What is the best way to regulate this industry or this new technology?
223
I think we agree on no regulation is not the right answer.
224
Too tight regulation is not the right answer either.
225
But what is from your view the right answer in terms of keeping the potential damage in mind
226
that this could happen and already happened.
227
So what is your advice on regulation?
228
What can we do better than others?
229
Safety is paramount.
230
There is no future for this industry without safe products.
231
Just as there is no future in autonomous vehicles if the vehicles are not safe.
232
And so it is not a choice.
233
You don't choose between safety and capability.
234
They are one.
235
They have to go together.
236
And so three pillars.
237
The first is you can't regulate if there's no technology.
238
So the technology industry must invent the technology for safety.
239
Just as Ola and I had to invent the technology and we have the safest autonomous vehicle in the car, in the world.
240
We had to invent the technology that allows you to achieve.
241
The functionality you want to see but also the guarantee of functional safety and active safety we want to deliver.
242
And so that requires invention of technology.
243
That's the first pillar.
244
But that's something that Germany is incredibly good at.
245
Your science, your math, your technology is incredibly good.
246
You have to invent the technology of safety.
247
Safety is not hopes and dreams.
248
Safety is technology and engineering.
249
Second, the companies need to have best practices.
250
Sometimes the young companies, they're still trying to grow up and they make maybe more mistakes than they should.
251
We need to make sure that companies make, deliver on the best practices, best methods, and even in safety,
252
as many of the people in the audience, there are probably many in the automotive industry, you know that safety is deep methodology,
253
deep best practices, deep engineering.
254
And that methodology has to be adhered to.
255
And then lastly, there's industrial and government regulations.
256
If it turns out that, and remember AI is two things.
257
Just as the internet, regulating the internet is hard, but regulating internet applications is not so hard.
258
We should be regulating the applications right away.
259
And so if there are AI technologies
260
that you see that's being applied to a new type of product that is not covered by the existing regulatory bodies,
261
they have to evaluate as soon as possible and make sure that their regulation includes AI.
262
And so I would and I think I've also heard you say
263
that you want to find that balance between innovation and regulation.
264
There's nothing to regulate if the industry doesn't thrive.
265
You want the German AI industry to thrive as well as do it safely responsibly.
266
So I think I think the balance is really important to do.
267
And so I think that the answer is we know there's technology we can invent
268
and deploy in order to have AI safety.
269
We know that there are best practices that we can adhere to as companies and industries.
270
And then in addition to that, if necessary, we'll make sure we regulate.
271
Just briefly, Chancellor, what would be your answer to the same question?
272
Maybe very briefly.
273
No, thank you.
274
This was extremely helpful because we are talking about that on the European level.
275
We are talking that on the national level and my approach is
276
that we at least need the European level
277
and better we have a global level of regulation and of safety for this fantastic new technology.
278
So this is my personal view, but we are still far from that because we are having a different approach between the Americans and the Europeans.
279
But we are working on that and most in this room know
280
that I was successful to get the AI regulation out of the normal regulation of AI in the European Union
281
and to have a special regulation for the machinery industry in Germany
282
and not being part of the general AI limitation and regulation.
283
So this was a quick achievement which we had.
284
Give Germany a chance.
285
Yeah.
286
Give this industry a chance to.
287
Yeah.
288
And just finally, very, very briefly, Chancellor, if Jensen came back in a year's time, which we very much hope,
289
what would you hope for him to see?
290
I would like to see him regularly.
291
