HIV is a deadly assassin.

It attacks our immune system's commanders, the helper T -cells.

Using enzymes, it injects its code, reprogramming the T -cells to clone the virus.

Some realize they've been infected and self -destruct, weakening your body's immune system.

Others stay in stealth mode for years before activating.

While it's no longer a death sentence, over 40 million people live with HIV, the majority in sub -Saharan Africa.

For decades, prevention and treatment has meant taking daily pills.

These interrupt the copying process, but can't get rid of the HIV already stored in your body.

Plus, if you stop taking them, the dormant virus can start copying itself again.

But scientists have spotted a weakness.

This stops new infections and it messes with how the shell is built in active infected cells too.

This treatment is a powerful weapon against HIV, but still requires regular healthcare visits, which can be difficult in hotspot regions.
