There's a brand new update for Stepford County Railway, and it might just be the biggest change to its gameplay in over 5 years.

So, let's take a look at all the best new features in SCR version 2.4.

I think the

best place to start is with passengers.

And no, I'm not talking about the random singular player you'll find on your train from time to time.

There are seriously non-player passengers now, which appear and disappear from your train each time you make a stop.

This is great.

I mean, after years of hauling around empty multiple units, we finally have a good reason to be driving these trains.

You know, because now there are quote unquote people who want to get to different places across the county.

I've seen some people refer to them as AI passengers, you know, artificial intelligence.

But this is a bit of an overstatement.

They're definitely more artificial than intelligent, that's for sure.

Because this isn't quite the implementation of passengers I was looking for.

I was really hoping that you'd be able to see them waiting on the platform, and then when I opened the doors, maybe they'd walk on board and choose a seat.

Alas, none of this happens in the game.

They just spawn in on the train.

So while this is absolutely a step in the right direction, it's not quite fully there yet.

But the developers did describe this iteration as phase one, so there should be more to come.

Now, the passengers, they aren't just there to make your train look busy busy.

People riding trains means people need tickets, and tickets need checking.

But how are you supposed to check those tickets?

Well, you can now walk through a train while it's moving.

Guards with over 1,500 XP and over two hours in the role now have the ability to check tickets.

And it's a really interesting system.

What we're seeing in real life is more and more tickets using scannable codes, with railway staff using scanners to help them quickly check whether those tickets are valid.

This is the process that you'll find in Stepford County Railway.

When you go to check a passenger's ticket, you'll be using a new interface in the bottom left of the screen.

It provides some information about the ticket they're holding, if they have one, and whether that ticket is valid or not.

From here you can check more information, for example about the passenger's discount card if they have one, or accept or reject the ticket.

When you come across someone with an invalid ticket, or without a ticket at all, you'll need to sell them one.

Again, the interface is really intuitive, the passenger asks for a ticket based on their journey, and you select between a few options to sell them one.

This is really exciting for me.

For years I felt like the guard roll wasn't being used to its full potential, considering you weren't able to walk through the train and there were no passengers on board.

But the SER devs have changed that completely with this update.

Really looking forward to guarding some longer routes now, whereas before I'd just get bored with having to sit around waiting between stations.

I think using a scanner rather than checking the details on every ticket manually was the right call.

It means you can get through a lot more passengers and it's quite satisfying actually.

I appreciate the sound effects too, much like what you'll hear in real life, to quickly indicate whether the ticket is valid or not, or to provide some other information.

Another big change to the guard role is the addition of physical guard panels.

Again, just another thing which makes it much more enjoyable to play as a guard now.

You can choose which local door you want to use, and you can move through the cab door as well, in case that's where your local door is.

But before we go too far away from ticket checking, there is actually another way of doing this without being a guard.

That's right, there's a brand new role that has been added to the game in version 2.4, and that is revenue protection.

But unlike the other roles, this one's locked behind a 400 robux game pass.

We'll come back to that.

Revenue protection officers, or RPOs, are able to board any train on the network to check passenger tickets.

You can even have multiple RPOs on the same train if it's long enough, alongside a guard, all working to check tickets at the same time.

It is great, you feel like you're working as part of a team

while having the flexibility to hop between trains as and when you please.

You could spend a whole afternoon just swapping between trains and operators and checking tickets.

You know, Stepford to Benton with Kinect, then to Morganstown with Metro, followed by a trip with Waterline, all without ever having to return to the menu.

But the obvious point is that you can also swap trains as a guard and do exactly the same thing.

So why would you get the game pass?

Well, if you haven't ranked up to guard yet, the game pass allows you to still check tickets like a guard can, although you can't control the doors.

And even if you have ranked up to guard, RPOs get twice as many points for checking tickets, I think up to 20 per stop, which is a really good way of earning points in the game.

The exact total depends on how many tickets you were able to check, as well as how accurate you were.

But the fact of the matter is, if you're a guard, unless you like the revenue protection uniform, you probably don't need this game pass.

It's there for those who want it, but there's also a way of getting access to the same features by playing the game, ranking up, and not spending any robux at all.

So I'm personally not that fussed that it's a game pass.

That's been a lot of talk about passengers and tickets, so I want to think about something else now.

Something that's been on a lot of players' minds is the fact that Express and Connect now go to Esterfield.

Yes, what used to be the waterline-only station.

I don't totally dig this, to be honest.

It's such a short stretch of track between Esterfield and Water Newton

that I don't really know why they didn't just build it in the first place

when the branch was introduced back in 2022.

I can kind of understand Connect going there, but Express?

I really don't think so.

It feels like we've got to the stage where Express is

being extended for the sake of being extended without much thought behind it.

I didn't think it should have gone to Nuri Harbour, I didn't think it should have gone to Raleigh Bay, so obviously I don't think it should have gone to Esterfield,

but at least that station will have a bit more traffic now?

I don't know, Nuri Harbour and Raleigh Bay, they don't have much more traffic now anyway.

Something I'm much happier about is the upgrade at Lynn by the Sea.

The station just has that much more detail now

and i think it looks really good it is a bit dark under the roof

but it's a great station overall better than it was before the only thing i would say is

that it's a shame

that you'll hardly find it even half full even with 75

player servers north shore has had its fair share of changes too

and the scenery in this area has had some attention as

well i think it all looks good to be honest i

haven't really got any issues with it i wish i had something more interesting to say.

I mean, the new buffer models at Terminating Platforms look pretty good.

By the way, you can now pick up two new station-related badges in this update.

First is for making it to the end of North Shore's new pier, and you'll get a badge called, wait for it, Pier Pressure.

Very good.

The second is a reference to the YouTube channel Jetlagged the Game, when they did their UK Hide and Seek series.

I won't spoil that for you if you haven't seen it, but it's something to do with the pigeons at Lynn by the Sea.

Trust me, I would add a Snackzone segment to this review if I wasn't going to get a copyright strike.

There have been a handful of minor changes elsewhere as well, but to be completely honest, nothing that I massively care about.

And I've got other things to talk about.

Next up is Trains.

A whole host of them have been upgraded, and I'll rattle through them now.

Class 68 gets the longer Trains Game Pass version with 6 carriages.

Class 321 gets a double set, also included with the game pass the class 331 has been

remodeled also with longer variants now class 170 has been upgraded as has the class 171

so have the adventures with the class 345 720

and 730 being remodeled

honest i haven't really got the time to talk about each and every one individually, but the quality is so good.

SCR have really stepped up their game in recent times, and have come such a long way from their paper trains long ago and the first iterations of trains with interiors.

Considering this is more of an arcade game than a fully fledged simulator, you know it's not trying to compete with the likes of trains and world, these trains look awesome.

And there's more where that came from too, with the class 142 and the 144 being added to the game, as well as the Class 143 being upgraded.

Plus, for Connect, we have the brand new Class 93 Tri-Mode locomotive

Out of all the trains added and upgraded in this update, this is the one I'm most looking forward to driving.
