Thank you.
2
Keep the chair.
3
Hi.
4
Just done, please.
5
I don't know what that means.
6
Today, you're coming with me to learn lots of everyday English expressions as I take you around a typical town in England.
7
Hi, I'm Steve.
8
Let's do this.
9
I'm driving into town and heading for a multi-storey car park.
10
Multi-storey just means there are several levels or floors.
11
On a Saturday this is free.
12
But since it's Tuesday, I have to get a ticket.
13
I'll just press the button to get the barrier to go up.
14
I've parked on the third floor, which is also the top deck.
15
I knew I'd have my pick of spaces up here.
16
There's hardly a soul about it.
17
But it does mean I have to take the lift down.
18
Press the button to call the lift.
19
I have the lift all to myself.
20
You can see that there are doors on both sides in this particular lift.
21
So sometimes you get in one set of doors and you go out the other way.
22
I don't want level 2, so I'll hang on while the doors shut again.
23
I think it's nice that they've made the lift doors look like a spaceship for the children.
24
I think I have to press for my floor again.
25
At last, this is me.
26
Just squeeze past this chair and I'm on the ground floor.
27
In the USA they'd call this the first floor, but here in England it's the ground floor.
28
I've parked on the top floor
29
because as you can see the ground floor is heaving which is another way of saying it's very busy.
30
It's heaving.
31
Let's walk past the parked cars and get outside.
32
Outside, into the bitterly cold wind, I know you can't feel it, but it's perishing.
33
We're in the English town of Warrington.
34
Now England is divided up into 48 areas called counties and this town Warrington is in the county of Cheshire.
35
And a long time ago I used to live here.
36
Past these empty tables, it's far too chilly for anyone to sit outside today.
37
My friend owns this cafe, Alma, so if you ever find yourself in Warrington, pop in for a quick bite.
38
This postman has a tough job today, but he's well wrapped up.
39
Let's have a peek in this estate agent's window.
40
It's full of property, houses and flats for sale in the town.
41
It's winter time at the moment and you can see all the trees have shed their leaves.
42
As you can see, buses here are yellow, not the usual red.
43
And they're single-deckers, not like our logo, which is a double-decker.
44
I'm crossing here at the Pelican Crossing to give you the best view of Warrington's spectacular landmark.
45
Wait for the beep and nip across the road.
46
And here they are, the magnificent golden gates of Warrington.
47
They were originally destined for a royal palace over a hundred years ago,
48
but somehow they ended up here in front of the town hall and yes that is really gold on them.
49
If you look carefully you can see a camera that the police watch to make sure no one pinches them.
50
Now we're walking by the side of a former post office but these days it's been converted into flats.
51
I had a look at buying one a few years ago.
52
Now the only place left to post your letters is this red pillar box.
53
Next we're heading into a little park which is called Queen's Gardens.
54
because of the weather.
55
I expect it will be deserted.
56
But in the summer, this area is teeming with people, especially at lunchtime when they all come to sit on these benches,
57
eat their sandwiches and chat.
58
Here you can see the flats I was just talking about.
59
Past a little white Victorian arch.
60
Victorian means that it comes from the time of Queen Victoria and it's her who this park is named after.
61
This statue is called a memorial.
62
And it honours British soldiers who fought and died in wars around the world.
63
This one is for a war in Africa that happened ages ago.
64
This is a grid which drains rainwater from the road and stops it flooding.
65
If you've wasted money, you can use the English expression, it's down the grid.
66
Past the rubbish bin.
67
There are some lovely old buildings along here that have been repurposed from homes into businesses.
68
Large paintings on walls like this are called murals.
69
My home city of Liverpool has tons of them.
70
Now we are in a pedestrian area, which means the vehicles aren't normally allowed to drive here.
71
Whilst I'm freezing my socks off, look at this guy in shorts.
72
Notice how these benches are rounded, that's to stop homeless people from sleeping on them, which is really sad.
73
Passing a nice couple holding hands.
74
On the right is a bank.
75
It's almost unusual to see actual banks these days as internet banking seems to have taken over
76
and lots of high street banks have closed down.
77
This store as you can see is called Poundland because until recently every single thing in there cost exactly £1.
78
But because of inflation prices have crept up.
79
Now lots of things for sale in there cost more than that.
80
They should rename it really.
81
I thought that young lady gasped because of me, but it was because of the people behind me.
82
me.
83
This is the town centre.
84
When I first came here, this is where two main roads crossed, so this would have been full of traffic.
85
Down here, and this is the scene of a tragedy.
86
That happened on a Saturday afternoon in 1993.
87
When ordinary people were doing their shopping, a bomb exploded, killing and injuring many.
88
The bombs had exploded inside metal waste bins
89
and many people running from the first explosion were caught by the blast of the second less than a minute later.
90
47 people were taken to hospital, their injuries ranging from shock to severe cuts and wounds.
91
This fountain was put up in memory of those terrible events.
92
For people like me who were here that day, it's still etched in our minds.
93
Let's get out of the cold and into the indoor market.
94
You can see it's very modern and full of stalls selling everything from shoes to food.
95
Past a place that sells pizza where my friend works part time.
96
This place sells Korean food which I've never tried, but I really should.
97
It smells delicious.
98
This market has an upstairs, so let's ride up the escalator and see what's up there.
99
Well Christmas is over, but there are still some Santa Clauses and Christmas trees around.
100
From here you get a bird's eye view of the whole place.
101
You know that this is a barber shop because it has a traditional pole outside.
102
They must have bought a job lot of these slanters, there are so many.
103
Let's go back down.
104
There only seems to be hairdressers up here. And back outside.
105
In front of us is a huge cinema.
106
This type is called a multiplex because it has lots of screens and can show many movies at the same time.
107
Again it's that word multi meaning many.
108
I parked in a multi-storey car park which has many floors.
109
This is a multiplex meaning it has lots of plexes.
110
I don't know what that means.
111
These metal poles are bike racks.
112
They're for securing your bike if you ride into town.
113
Because Christmas is over and it's January, there are sales in full swing.
114
And if you want to buy something really expensive, now is the best time.
115
You should strike while the iron's hot.
116
As you can see, the town centre is quiet, except for the cafes which are rampacked.
117
This is a betting shop which is commonly called a bookies in the UK.
118
It's where you can bet money on sports like horse racing or football.
119
Here is a travel agent with adverts in the window for holidays to places warm and far away.
120
where you live right now.
121
Over there we can see a couple of old-fashioned red telephone boxes
122
but when we take a closer look I think you'll be surprised.
123
No phone, but instead a defibrillator.
124
A medical device for restarting people's hearts if they've stopped.
125
Anyone can use these in an emergency.
126
And they are really easy to use.
127
Now we've come into where years ago they used to sell fish
128
but now it's just a nice square where the local council sometimes puts on shows that are free to watch.
129
If you've ever read the book Alice in Wonderland
130
or seen the film then you'll recognize these characters and they're here
131
because the author of the book Lewis Carroll used to live and work here in a local church.
132
Now it's time to head back inside.
133
I'm going into this shop to buy some candles to make my house feel cosy in the evenings.
134
These are what I want.
135
Can you just have these, love, please?
136
Do you need a bag?
137
Er, no, but they're in your pocket.
138
Thanks.
139
All right.
140
Three...
141
Is that just £9.99 to buy cash?
142
Yeah.
143
Oops.
144
There you go.
145
Thank you.
146
Keep the chair.
147
Come on, it's absolutely great.
148
In the charity.
149
Do you want your receipt?
150
Yeah, thanks.
151
Cheers, love.
152
Bye-bye.
153
Have a good one.
154
I've got just one more thing to get before I go back to the car and that's socks.
155
This is one of the cheapest department stores that there is in the UK.
156
You can watch me walk around one of the more expensive ones in another video on this channel.
157
Through here into the menswear department.
158
Passed some t-shirts and pairs of jeans.
159
Okay got them.
160
And they were in the sale, so a proper bargain.
161
Let's go to the checkout and pay.
162
Oh blooming heck, there's a bit of a queue.
163
I'll have to wait my turn.
164
Typical, they only have one checkout open.
165
Behind the lady you can see different types of perfume and aftershave.
166
They put them there because they are so often stolen by shoplifters.
167
When you buy clothes here, if it's on a clothes hanger, the shop assistants will ask if you want it,
168
a hanger that is, and if you don't, they will remove the clothes from it.
169
This lady just did.
170
I'm going to fast forward a little so you don't have to wait with me.
171
Hi, just down place. Did it work?
172
Erm...
173
You look frozen, love.
174
It's not so warm, is it?
175
It's no heat.
176
Cheers, thanks.
177
Bye.
178
I'm thankful that I've been in the middle of a country.
179
Perfect.
180
Now back to the left.
181
Sorry.
182
I'm sorry, that's me.
183
Is it going up first?
184
I hope so.
185
Now you're up and down.
186
Yeah, I'll be living in the afternoon.
187
Come back to the floor.
188
Cheers.

攻克发音与节奏难点
英式英语的一大特点是语调起伏和弱读现象。比如视频中"press the button"的"the"弱读为/ðə/,"I have the lift all to myself"的连读的节奏。
