And I'm Georgie.
5
Neil, I'm going to play you two sound recordings
6
and I want you to tell me how you feel when you hear them.
7

9
and now this...
10

But the second one, oh it's horrible.

26
But now I have a question for you, Georgie.
27
Sound is measured in units called decibels,
28
but how many decibels would it be if I whispered?
29
A whisper is speaking like this.
30
Is it a 3 decibels,
31
b 13 decibels, or c 30 decibels?
32
Oh, that's really hard.
33
I'll go for b 13 decibels.
34
Well, we'll find out the answer at the end of the programme.
35
Let's start in one of the noisiest cities in the world,
36
Mumbai, in India, where daytime noise levels regularly hit 80 decibels,
37
which is over 20 decibels higher than World Health Organisation recommendations.
38

55
So what can be done to tackle noise in cities like Mumbai?
56
One interesting approach involves using sound itself to make things feel quieter.
57
Soundscaping is the idea of adding certain sounds to busy public spaces so that they sound and feel more relaxing.
58

59

62
On BBC World Service programme People Fixing the World,
63
he tells reporter Natasha Fernandez that these sounds included ocean waves and some unusual sounding sand.
64
The sand on the Magdalen Island can sing.
65
When you walk into the sound firmly,
66
the sound makes some squeaky sounds.
67
So that's one sound that is kind of funny, kind of special.
68
Inside this small park, surrounded by busy roads,
69
Charles and his team set up an immersive sound installation in the form of speakers planted in flower beds.

86
I asked you how loud a whisper is.

Yes, and I said 13 decibels.
88
