Hello Bez.
2
Laura.
3
How are you feeling?
4
Healthy?
5
I'm feeling as fit as a fiddle. Are you?
6
I hope you are.
7
Well I don't know if I am.
8
Because today we're talking about health.
9
Lots of things to discuss with health.
10
So do you make an effort to keep yourself healthy?
11
Good question.
12
Is this an intervention um no I with my food with
13
your food well you all you pick me up then go on you
14
so we both have we're a bit weird really we both
15
have exactly the same lunch every day not as each other
16
well we both have a salad every day for our lunch just
17
because it's easy and I don't like choosing
18
and we both practically you have like a banana bready kind of thing
19
but we basically have porridge every day we have porridge in the morning salad
20
so that's very healthy banana and an orange yeah as well
21
so you're having for your lunch salad protein with your chicken walnuts more protein fruit
22
but that's really really good
23
and then for our dinner we always make stuff there's always
24
vegetables it's very like it's like fresh we never have anything
25
frozen we'd have nothing processed no what we really try not to have anything protest protest
26
protest so I think with your food 100 % the only thing you're not doing
27
which you could do would be more exercise
28
but yeah you could i feel like once i
29
because i i know
30
that i will start exercising at some point he's just waiting
31
to unleash himself on the gym it wouldn't be fair enough
32
just you wait till i start i do feel like
33
when i when i do start exercising it i will just i will just commit no well yes commit
34
but i will become just fitter very quickly
35
because i feel like my i'm already there with my diet i feel you might need to eat more
36
when you're exercising you might find that you're not eating enough
37
because at the minute you're eating perfectly for like someone who doesn't do a lot of exercise yeah
38
but i think when you exercise you might need to eat like more chicken
39
or like more stuff which is great love eating more um
40
but i think you're doing really well to keep yourself healthy definitely um
41
but yeah i want to get into more golf
42
which helps with walking and stuff my friends
43
if they play football on a friday might start doing
44
that a little bit more and we used to really like swimming
45
but they're building a swimming pool and it's not finished yet
46
so once that's yeah when we used to live there was a swimming pool
47
so we used to go every week
48
and once this swim pool's finished here well we can go
49
swimming we'll go i like we'll go i i'm a very mindful eater
50
so like when i
51
when i eat my diet is very like i know i
52
i know what i know what what i'm digesting basically yeah
53
i know what i'm what my intake is good um like
54
for example tonight i'm going to have some popcorn well right thank you an outcome
55
but that means i'm not going to have popcorn for like at least another week
56
and a half two weeks yeah do you think people in
57
general are healthier now than they used to be oh well we were discussing this either day
58
so 18 to 24 year olds in the united kingdom are
59
is the age group where the least percentage of people drink alcohol yeah whereas
60
that used to be the most drinking yeah people used to
61
say oh young people drink now young people don't drink
62
and they go to university and it's no it's becoming less
63
and less like i'm gonna go to uni
64
and just drink every night like people are going to clubs
65
less they're drinking less yeah there was i um i saw something where
66
so when we went to university freshers
67
if you're a fresher you're a person who fresh to uni fresh to uni
68
so like you're the first you're in the first year of university
69
and there was there's freshers week
70
which is just a load of events for the new people just to get to know each other
71
and feel you dress up
72
and they have like nights where they go right we're going to do a a night at the student bar
73
but you all have to dress up like superheroes
74
or then we're gonna do this whereas now there's apparently there's a lot more sober events
75
so during the day just stuff during the day yeah like like little clubs and things
76
which is great we've got I think we've got a bit
77
of any I think compared to lots of countries in this
78
country we do have a bit of a drinking problem I think a lot of people in the UK go
79
and you can't have fun unless there's alcohol involved think about
80
like everything like everything go to the theater there's a bar
81
and people are having drinks like getting on a plane there's
82
everything is like it can't be fun unless there's alcohol
83
which doesn't feel like a good attitude to no no no
84
it's not it feels like it should be a nice bonus
85
but if you're if you're somewhere
86
and you go well like we said this the other day
87
if you like if someone had a wedding
88
and they the people at the wedding said the people who were having the wedding the bride
89
and groom said we would like to decide
90
that there's gonna to be no alcohol served at this wedding
91
people would be fuming the guests would be like no alcohol it's gonna be the worst wedding ever
92
but why why like why do you need alcohol to have a good time like it's a wedding
93
or the football or yeah
94
if they started saying you can't have alcohol at the football
95
what would happen well no to be honest at the i
96
think i've seen more people drink alcohol at the theater than
97
at the football i honestly i like there is a more
98
there is a bigger drinking culture at theatres than football in my opinion i think
99
that more people will just go to the match
100
and then go home or maybe maybe maybe have to go for a drink yeah but i think that
101
um yeah like adults like like um grown men yeah grown women i'm gonna i'm gonna generalize here
102
and say that let's generalize and say that the women go to the theater
103
and the men go to the football i'm gonna be very very massive generalization
104
but yeah but let's just imagine
105
that yeah the women at the theater drink more than the men at the football probably probably
106
but why in
107
that in a certain age bracket yeah why do you think
108
there is this thing where people like you have to drink to have a good time why would people be
109
so crazily offended
110
if you couldn't drink at a wedding i don't know i
111
i don't know maybe people are more anxious now yeah
112
so people are like less confident they don't know what to do especially
113
because like a lot of wedding is dancing
114
and i do think there's a huge number of people who will not dance unless they're drunk
115
which is sad or maybe it's an yeah or maybe it's an anxious thing so more people are stressed
116
so they just look forward to any opportunity they can to kind of relieve their stress
117
um so they look for like that's sad that we rely on
118
that it's just like it should be yeah i feel like
119
alcohol should be like cake like you don't have it every day
120
or like you
121
if someone said we're gonna have a wedding with no cake
122
you'd be like okay it's fine it's a nice addition i quite like a bit of cake
123
but i can live without it
124
but i think alcohol's become like the crutch of a good time like
125
if we're gonna have a good time
126
and i get it i completely get it
127
when i was a student like i i was not going out without without having a drink um
128
but now i think i'm a lot better at no i
129
i do not get drunk ever do i no i don't
130
get drunk ever i don't like being drunk i don't like
131
the day after i don't like how it feels i feel
132
like i i waste the whole next day i've said this before the the day the the feeling i get
133
when i'm hung over yeah is is not worth the feeling drunk
134
so to put it a different way the feeling of waking
135
up the next day feeling as fresh as a daisy is a better feeling than being drunk the night before, in my opinion.
136
And maybe that makes me a granddad, a boring old man.
137
Loser.
138
Maybe.
139
Maybe we are. But I...
140
But the thing is, I still have a great time.
141
Exactly.
142
There are people who are more drunk than us who are not having as much fun as us.
143
Every wedding I go to, I make it my mission to keep that dance floor going.
144
That's like my mission.
145
I dance more than anybody.
146
I think I am the biggest dancer.
147
Would you not say? yes no i agree i do routines
148
i'm doing like high kicks i'm doing twirls i'm giving everything
149
i'm sober as a nun like i don't need the thing
150
and i think that's because i'm just naturally confident
151
but i am having a so i think people would assume
152
if i said to them i went to a wedding i
153
didn't drink they might think oh you didn't have a very
154
good time then did you i had a lovely time i
155
had a great time i was dancing i was having a
156
really good time i was there till midnight i was there till it finished i said goodbye to everyone
157
and i woke up the next day and i was fine yeah
158
but i think you have the same you like on paper
159
then the next day you have the same experience as everybody
160
else yeah like you can still talk about there's nothing exclusive
161
that happened to the drinkers yeah yeah it's not like they
162
entered the secret room where yeah fun things happened it just meant they felt worse
163
and there was one place that i went before
164
and they said oh i'm gonna be drinking later on i'm gonna be i'm gonna be in
165
that bush asleep in that bush later yeah
166
why do you want to be asleep in a bush why
167
do you want to be asleep in a bush drinking is a funny one do you think
168
so yes to answer your question i think that people are
169
they must be healthier now than they were in the past
170
i don't know though no no no no no yeah i know
171
but think about obesity numbers i think the obesity thing might be the only thing that's different from the past
172
but everything else we are much healthier than the past
173
because they used to drink even more in the past didn't they oh well yeah
174
and i mean maybe please correct me if i'm wrong historians
175
but basically like that you couldn't really drink water really much
176
so like the only thing that was safe to drink was like things
177
that were um fermented and stuff so like yeah wine
178
and beer was people would smoke in 70 a day go into offices
179
that had like um arsenic is that what it is in the walls
180
and everything lead poisoning like i saw a video i saw
181
a video of a of grand central station in new york right
182
and so many people used to smoke in grand central station that the roof used to be just, like, really dirty.
183
Yeah.
184
And they cleaned it in, like, I'm going to estimate the 80s, 90s, I don't know.
185
They cleaned it.
186
Yeah.
187
But they've left one square where you can see.
188
To show the smoke.
189
And it's just black.
190
Wow.
191
It's black.
192
And there's, imagine, like, a beautiful, have you been to Grand Central Station?
193
Yes.
194
So, like, it's beautiful.
195
Like, the ceiling is beautiful.
196
Like, it's amazing.
197
it used to just be black because of how much people smoked yeah
198
which is mental
199
and smoking numbers has gone way down it's quite good no people vape now people vape now
200
but what they've started doing in the uk i think they
201
did in australia didn't they they're doing it in the uk
202
now where they are going to every year they're going to increase the age for buying buying cigarettes
203
so like at the minute it's 18 is it to buy
204
a cigarette 21 no it's probably more now let's say it's 21
205
so like next year it'll become 22 then 23
206
so the idea is
207
that people born after a certain year will never be old
208
enough yeah to buy whereas people who are smokers they can
209
they they don't have to quit straight they're not going to say like it's all illegal right now
210
but it's encouraging new people not taking it yeah
211
and i think it's really worked in australia yeah i mean that's a great idea
212
and the thing with vapes i i think with vapes it should be
213
because they used to be an aid for giving up smoking
214
now people just do it i think vape should be prescription
215
only i think vape should be you go to the doctor for cigarette addiction
216
and they give you a prescription for a vape i don't
217
why are we just being able to buy them in the shops like
218
because kids are buying vapes kids who have never smoked before
219
ever are going i want to vape that's not for you
220
it was for people who were giving up smoking there will be there will be
221
and there probably is already but there will be research into why vaping is bad.
222
I know.
223
Because everybody thinks at the moment, just as everybody did in the past with, oh yeah, smoking's fine, smoking's good for you.
224
Smoking's fine.
225
There will be research into...
226
And I don't like to judge people's choices.
227
You do what you want, you know.
228
I'm not going to say, if you are a vaper, I don't care, do what you want.
229
It's just interesting that money always trumps everything else.
230
So obviously the government and everyone knows
231
that the right thing to do would be putting some laws on vaping yeah
232
but then it's like oh
233
but they make a lot of money from vaping like companies
234
make loads of money from vaping okay fair enough then like money always seems to trump everything
235
and we were talking about this the other day in supermarkets
236
for example chocolate bars will be 50 off there'll be a 50 off on chocolate bars yeah
237
and because they want they want you to go oh 50 off i'll buy
238
that and i'll buy that chocolate and they want you to get addicted to chocolate
239
and sugar because it's because
240
that is the addictive stuff that's the addictive you can't get addicted to carrots no
241
but why do they never put 50 off on meat
242
or carrots or eggs or um yeah just vegetables
243
or fruit it's very hard to be healthy now it's very hard yeah no it's weird isn't it
244
that like being healthy is like a privilege it is i think it is
245
and i that's why i don't blame anyone for not eating healthy in this day
246
and age especially in this country with like the cost of living crisis i do not blame them
247
because if you're on the poverty line and you're having to work three jobs
248
and you've got kids and you're so busy
249
because you're working all these jobs just to be able to afford to heat the house
250
and then you go to the supermarket
251
and you've got cheryl next to you who's got loads of money
252
and she's like well i'm gonna buy a parsnip and a potato
253
and some meat and i'm gonna make a soup or whatever
254
and she's there going i don't have time to make this
255
soup sorry i've got my kids i just need to have
256
something now i'm going to buy this frozen pizza just
257
so i can get it's cheap
258
and i can afford it i don't blame them at all
259
and they look and they go oh look that frozen pizza's on offer
260
which has nothing vegetables a full price so i'm going to go for
261
that so i completely don't blame people it's
262
so much harder now whereas in the 40s
263
or at the 50s you went to your local green grocer
264
and they went oh here's your vegetables here's your meat they
265
didn't have all this i find it i find it mental i i completely agree it's strange
266
that when people go on a diet
267
people going on a diet yeah by definition what they are
268
doing is they are just usually they are just eating what people used to eat in the past yeah
269
which is vegetables
270
and fruit people it's mental people go oh in the i'm
271
gonna go on a diet i'm just gonna eat like veg fruit things like
272
that potatoes potatoes that was literally that's what food was
273
and should be in my opinion spoiled with like processed food
274
and and quick food it's mental isn't it
275
that like food like a diet is food
276
that humans have evolved to eat we haven't evolved to eat
277
all these chemicals we haven't evolved to have a monster energy drink
278
and then a can of pringles
279
if they taste better than carrots though isn't it like it
280
tastes better like it tastes good like people we're just gonna
281
go for what yeah Laura you used to be a hypochondriac yeah I used to have hypochondriac tendencies
282
so I used to like I don't do it
283
so much anymore I'm much better now but I used to google like everything
284
so if like I had a headache google that what could
285
that be or my arm hurts or google that what could
286
that be you know is that a serious illness is
287
that a sign of something bigger um and I do it all the time
288
and like what happens was is you're you there is a there is a thing
289
called um psycho something symptoms like a self something where you think about something
290
and you get it so like
291
if i was thinking oh my my tummy's been hurting a lot yeah my tummy will hurt more
292
because your brain kind of creates that no i i get
293
that sometimes where like if i
294
if i start thinking oh have i got a headache
295
if i really think about having a headache i think i would get a headache yeah yeah um oh 100
296
or like if you said to yourself oh i think i'm getting ill i think I'm feeling ill.
297
You probably will probably start to feel ill because your brain's so powerful.
298
So I was giving myself all these random symptoms
299
that I'd have for like two days and then they would go because my brain's just like, and I'd always think I've got this, I'm going to die, I've got the blah blah.
300
It was really weird.
301
And I think I know...
302
I think I'm just such a perfectionist.
303
I think I was also a perfectionist for like my health
304
and I just didn't want there to be anything that wasn't going to be perfect.
305
So I wanted to just always be in a perfect state of health.
306
And if I wasn't in a perfect state of health, if I had like a bad back one day, I'm like, what's that?
307
Because I'm supposed to be perfect.
308
My health is supposed to be perfect.
309
What's that thing?
310
And I was trying to fix it.
311
And you didn't used to go to the doctor when you were a kid?
312
No, yeah.
313
I never used to go to the doctor when I was a kid.
314
So I think I just maybe had in my head like, oh, what if they've missed something?
315
And if I go to the doctor, that must mean that that's a really bad thing yeah
316
and i just got obsessed with like having answers like i
317
just wanted a doctor to tell me oh don't worry about
318
that that's that
319
so you just go to the doctor all the time i understand i understand the doctor all the time
320
but i don't know what's changed
321
but i'm much better now like i think i'm i think it's just like a self -fulfilling thing
322
so like you're much better now so you know which means
323
that you're not giving yourself the things it's
324
that i think that's exactly what it is
325
so i'm not i'm not creating it we were saying this
326
the other day we don't get ill very often do we no why don't we get ill maybe we eat well
327
Hopefully it's the porridge
328
and the salads I think it's working from home to be honest I think it's the fact
329
that we don't mix with lots of people Is why we don't really get ill
330
Because I tell you what happens to us a lot We feel like we're going to be ill Tomorrow
331
and then we never wake up ill
332
So we'll have a day where we go Oh I feel
333
like I'm Got a bit of a sore throat I might be ill tomorrow And then I'll go to sleep thinking
334
I'm going to wake up ill And I'm going to have to cancel all my lessons
335
And then I wake up and I'm okay yeah yeah i don't know what
336
that is i think it's just we don't mix with people maybe
337
but then again i do think that it can't be a coincidence
338
that i do think that we eat well
339
so we might have a good immune system for it
340
so like we get little things coming in
341
and then our immune system goes back off yeah like
342
when was the last time i can't remember the last time
343
i was actually like i wrote it was like two years
344
ago i remember i watched like three films in one day like horror films
345
because it was like october yeah two years ago i remember
346
that um we did have covid quite bad yeah that's true maybe our covid antibodies bodies are just
347
so good at fighting everything off it's the vaccine yeah maybe
348
they're like get out of here get it yeah covid was bad i felt really poorly with covid
349
but it was again only like two days and then i was okay what's the worst symptom that you
350
like have when you're ill in general
351
if you have like the flu i hate like um sensitive skin yeah
352
when it hurts to put your t -shirt on
353
or like it just hurts to put clothes on because during like
354
when i had covid
355
when i had covid it was it was horrible like the feeling on your skin
356
that was horrible that's a surefire way if my skin does
357
that i know i'm ill but i had
358
that the other day i had that the other day
359
and then it went away um yeah i hate i hate
360
that feeling because you just feel like your whole but you feel
361
so fragile yeah you feel like oh i could break
362
if someone hits me i'll just snap do you do you um do you agree with it
363
so sometimes sometimes i feel
364
oh there's some novelty to being ill like oh on the sofa in my pajamas yeah
365
or whatever but then And when you've got it, you go, I hate this.
366
This is horrible.
367
Oh, yeah.
368
And then when you are ill, well, when I'm ill, I always think, I can't wait until I'm better.
369
I'm going to appreciate every single second.
370
You're like, when I'm better, I'm going to just take life by the reins and go and do things and be outside.
371
But I think there's a perfect level of thing.
372
For me, it's headaches.
373
I don't really get headaches.
374
I can't believe that.
375
I can't believe that.
376
You just don't get headaches.
377
I'm a tummy ache person.
378
I'm not a headache person.
379
That's true.
380
I don't really get tummy aches very often.
381
I think you're either a headache person or a tummy ache person.
382
And um, sore throats.
383
I don't really get sore throats.
384
No, when I say...
385
Yeah.
386
But when I'm ill in general, so I have the lot.
387
I have headaches, I'm sneezing, I've got my sore throat, I'm coughing.
388
Yeah, it's awful.
389
I've got my skin.
390
What do we call it?
391
Chicken skin?
392
I think we call it chicken skin because it feels like your skin's fragile like chicken skin, but I don't think that's what it's actually called.
393
Some people call it butterfly skin.
394
Butterfly skin, that's it.
395
Yeah, because it's like so sensitive, like a butterfly wing.
396
yeah yeah so that all of those things the thing
397
that gets me is the sore throat thing and the headache
398
but the sore throat in particular
399
because yeah it hurts the talk you can't swallow like you've
400
got like saliva yeah oh it's awful what do you eat
401
when you're ill oh a typical
402
if i was ever ill home from school um my mum would come in with a plate
403
and there'd be a sandwich some crisps and like a little chocolate bar
404
and that would be the most typical like i'm ill kind of dinner.
405
You have that now sometimes.
406
It's actually lunch sometimes, occasionally.
407
Quite comforting, quite like, oh, I'm having a little, little, but there is a perfect level of being ill.
408
Like when you said there's a nice novelty, there is a perfect level where you're just a little bit ill, enough to sit on the sofa and not do anything, but you're okay, really.
409
Yeah.
410
Yeah.
411
Cuddle up.
412
That's good.
413
For me, it was eggs.
414
Eggs?
415
Oh, I wouldn't want that.
416
Like egg and soldiers.
417
No. I want, like, processed food if I'm feeling that very well. Or soup.
418
Oh, lovely bowl of soup.
419
Staying home from school
420
when you're ill that'd be nice having like a cold day
421
on a cold day it's like kind of i remember there was one time where it was like snowing
422
and i was ill oh nice and i watched like
423
that like a dvd of some kind of i think it
424
was black had it some tv show in the uk and then
425
uh had me too had the fire on in the living
426
room it's lovely i do think yeah i think we should every day be
427
so grateful for our health as well i think like that's one thing
428
that people don't do i think if you're healthy and
429
if you're able to wake up walk to the kitchen make stuff coffee go to work
430
that is you should be so grateful for that that's great
431
because it's like so many
432
when you're like young i think we just think about money
433
i want to do stuff whether you get older you probably value yeah you value health a lot more um
434
and so i i really try to every day i feel good i'm like
435
so many people would love to feel as good as i do right now like
436
so many people would pay millions to feel as healthy as i do and
437
so i really try to be very grateful for i mean
438
that's what's helped with my hypochondrially thing just being like the fact that I'm here talking, working
439
walking around that's so amazing and I'm so much healthier than
440
so many people so I'd be really good I was watching a podcast and they were saying
441
that they would give I think it was you were saying this about
442
the Australian people Hamish and Andrew oh yeah Richard Branson who owned
443
Virgin? yeah he's a local he was like a billionaire he was saying
444
that he would give everything to be like all of his money to be like 20 or less yeah Yeah, because someone was on a radio show and this guy said, hey, can you just go to an ATM?
445
Can you give me a thousand dollars?
446
That won't be anything for you, but it would change my entire month.
447
And he said, I tell you what, I'd give all my money for your age, because he was 22, and he was like, I would give all my money for your age.
448
So I'd have been young and healthy.
449
Interesting.
450
Very interesting, Kat.
451
Shall we go and have what we have?
452
Are we having a healthy meal now?
453
We're having some spaghetti.
454
Yeah, boy. Because it's a weekend.
455
I love spaghetti.
456
And spaghetti isn't inherently unhealthy.
457
No, it's just flour and egg.
458
It's fine.
459
It's when people put a bunch of cheese and sauce on it.
460
That's when it gets thin, but...
461
There'll be a little bit of cheese on it.
462
Lovely.
463
Love cheesy spaghetti.
464
Amazing.
465
Lovely.
466
Lovely.
467
Let's end with a handshake, don't we?
468
All the best.
469
That was an intense one.
470
Okay, and I'll see you next time.
471
Bye.
472
Bye -bye.
