1
We have 24 hours in Dublin
2
but we want to spend as little money as possible
3
so come with us you'll see Dublin and you will learn some very useful English along the way.
4
So I thought the first thing we can do is go to Dublin Castle.
5
I didn't even know Dublin had a castle.
6
Neither did I.
7
i always find it funny and i suppose it's inevitable
8
and there's no real way of avoiding this
9
but you get these statues of these really important people like
10
that jim larkin was one of the founders of the irish labor party
11
and he's just got bird poo on his head like you
12
just get these amazing historical figures with bird poo on her
13
head has a bird ever pooed on your head no very
14
close a couple of times some near misses yeah i've had a lot of near misses a lot of close shaves
15
right so that is the spire obviously free to look at we love that
16
and it goes all the way up to the heavens it
17
just ascends up to the clouds it's much taller than i thought um
18
and i don't think the video does it justice it's quite shocking to see how tall it is
19
and it's just in the middle of a busy street so this is free to view
20
yeah it's not the most photogenic river i've ever seen it's not the most picturesque
21
but hey it's a river laura i think this might be
22
free this is the trinity college in dublin uh should we go
23
and a look this is a nice place of calm i feel amidst the chaos of dublin on a sunday
24
because there was a lot of people out there
25
but this is quite nice because where we just were was kind of the shopping district
26
and it felt like there was just an onslaught of people
27
but this feels a bit more like i can breathe okay
28
guess the year this trinity college was established guess the year i'll give you three seconds one two three 1592
29
laura there are some ominous gray clouds in the distance
30
i hope it doesn't rain it is forecast to rain
31
so i hope it doesn't chuck it down just a little
32
drizzle i wouldn't mind a drizzle to be honest it's been quite warm recently
33
so a little drizzle wouldn't be too bad i certainly don't want the heavens to open today
34
without a doubt the most common accent i have heard walking
35
around dublin that's not irish american a huge number of american
36
tourists come to dublin i think a lot of americans have irish heritage
37
so they want to come and connect to ireland so hearing a lot of american accents Yeah, relatively, the United States is a new country,
38
so you do get a lot of Americans who come to Ireland to almost feel connected to their heritage as well, which is nice to see, I suppose.
39
I'm not gonna lie I'm a little overstimulated there are a lot of people the streets aren't
40
that wide they're quite narrow
41
so it does sometimes feel like there are tons of people
42
walking on one small path um it is a sunday
43
so i'd be intrigued to see if it's a little bit quieter tomorrow on monday
44
but at the minute it's a lot
45
there are a lot of shops like this dotted around dublin
46
and uh they're just full of tourist tat i suppose
47
and they're all just things with like leprechauns on them
48
and pots of gold and i'd say
49
that these types of shops a lot of people refer to them as tourist traps
50
and i completely get it me and laura did go to japan
51
and canada last year and um yeah like we bought some like fridge magnets
52
or uh little key rings and things like
53
that i completely get it it's a really good way to get a gift for somebody if you're visiting, but let's be honest, they're a bit rubbish.
54
Right, Laura, I think that the castle is up ahead.
55
So we were just walking past and I spotted this and I thought it might be the original, but it's not.
56
So it's a copy.
57
There are about 50 copies around the world of a statue called Homeless Jesus by Timothy Schmoltz.
58
I didn't know that off by heart, by the way.
59
I did Google it.
60
And it's supposed to be this very provocative statue
61
and it's based off part of scripture here
62
so it says jesus tells the disciples in the gospel of
63
matthew as you did it to one of the least of my brothers you did it to me
64
so like how you treat the people
65
that you view to be less than you is how you're treating me
66
so i think that's really really interesting
67
and you can see like the um nail marks in his
68
feet that's how you know it's supposed to be jesus
69
but yeah we just stumbled upon it we just were walking past
70
and stumbled upon it
71
and i think that's sometimes the beauty of just wandering around a new city without a plan
72
because you just come across things.
73
This is the Hapenny Bridge.
74
Notice that weird pronunciation by the way, Hapenny.
75
It's half penny but people shorten it to Hapenny and it's called
76
that because it used to cost a Hapenny to cross it there was a toll charge
77
so before this bridge you used to cross the river on a ferry
78
and it wasn't very good
79
so then they built this bridge charged hate me to go across it
80
but then they dropped that charge so now it's free so we could go across it for free
81
finding this castle has been a wild goose chase you would think a castle would be quite prominent
82
and you could find it quite easily we've been here there
83
and everywhere down the streets crossing the road
84
but i think we're here now so it's closed um
85
so it's definitely closed um
86
so what we might do is we might come back tomorrow um might come back tomorrow to see
87
if we can go in yeah i do agree laura
88
that it is quite hard crossing all these roads you just get a whiff fish
89
and chips there oh oh my gosh look at this i think this is a famous fish
90
and chip shop so here's a list of all the famous people who have dined at this fish
91
and chip shop they could just make it up they could
92
put anything they could just put like oh yeah freddie mercury
93
the beatles who would know venus williams serena williams they came together um ron howard i believe he's been
94
Colin Farrell, of course.
95
Ron Howard.
96
Justin Timberlake's parents.
97
In quotation marks.
98
It could have been anyone.
99
Am I in the mood for fish and chips, though?
100
Is that what I want?
101
Because it's dinner time.
102
Yeah, it's quarter to six.
103
Dinner time.
104
I don't think I want fish and chips today.
105
Maybe tomorrow.
106
But let's just think about this, Laura.
107
Let's deliberate.
108
Yeah.
109
What do we want for dinner?
110
Because with that, without fish and chips, you can't sit down.
111
very I do want to sit down okay yeah my legs
112
are tired okay are you in the mood for like noodles
113
Thai Asian type stuff well what is kind of Irish what's what's Irish food like an Irish stew
114
and things like that Irish fare is like um yes Jews um stuff made in Guinness
115
so like a Guinness stew oh yeah oh I want a
116
Guinness at some point oh god we'll get you a Guinness don't you worry um Um, I wouldn't say Irish food is calling to me right now.
117
I don't think I'm in the mood for a stew.
118
How about we just go for a wander and see what we come across?
119
Okay.
120
Obviously, we had to spend money on dinner.
121
Obviously.
122
But it was really good.
123
We found a nice Thai restaurant.
124
I feel like we always have Thai i think we had
125
thai in the liverpool video as well we just love it
126
so we're gonna go to the temple bar area very famous area let's go have a drink
127
so this is temple bar it's this really famous bar everyone
128
has their photo taken in front of it i don't really
129
know why it's just kind of become a landmark it's become a spot it's become something
130
that you go to um so we're gonna try to grab a Guinness in there, but it might be busy.
131
Temple bar.
132
way too busy shoulder to shoulder in there i'm not going
133
in there it's not my scene i don't like really sweaty crowded bars
134
so we're going to find a quieter bar
135
because i want to sit down with a drink i don't want all
136
that noise like for some people who absolutely love just going to the pub
137
and having beer after beer after beer then i think dublin is a fantastic place to come just for
138
that kind of drinking culture um i like having a beer i like having a guinness it's very very nice
139
but sitting in a packed pub drinking beer after beer is not really my scene
140
so i'm excited to find a quieter pub this is what i'm talking about nice
141
and quiet barely any people that's the atmosphere i like i know some people would look at this pub
142
and say it's dead the atmosphere is dead because there's no people here
143
and i know a lot of people would prefer a very lively bar
144
but i think sometimes i'm in the mood for that
145
but a lot of the time i just find it a bit overwhelming
146
when you just stood up there's people breathing down your neck you're hot you can't sit down it's not for me
147
right i've had me paint i think now is a good
148
time to go back to the hotel have a good night's sleep
149
and keep exploring tomorrow we've somehow booked um a hotel very close to like a rock and roll venue
150
so i will update you um if we get any sleep
151
morning good morning are you feeling refreshed i feel like i slept in the middle of a rock concert
152
that is what it felt like to be honest it was
153
um yeah we've booked a hotel it wasn't badly reviewed no i feel like the reviews didn't mention
154
that too much i don't think you would i don't think
155
you would it almost feels like i don't think there's any point having a hotel
156
because i looked and the place
157
that was playing the rock music plays it every night
158
so i don't think there's any point having a hotel here
159
because they play until half two in the morning there is a point
160
because suckers like us will pay i suppose it was just comical it was funny
161
it says it's raining outside but we can't really see
162
because the windows are a sliver of a window it's like um
163
but apparently it's raining
164
so we're going to go to a museum that's free buy
165
an umbrella for the camera we do need to buy an umbrella
166
and then we're going to go to a museum that's free
167
um i think there are some dinosaurs there oh that'd be cool yeah super cool
168
and then let's see what we want to do
169
there's still people on open top buses in this weather
170
and i admire the resilience i admire it they thought i'm
171
in dublin i'm on holiday i'm going on an open top bus i don't care if i get soaked
172
okay so we're at the museum this is the archaeology museum
173
and it's free to enter so let's go in see some old bones have a great time
174
this is the kind of thing kim kardashian would wear to the met gala I'm surprised she hasn't done it yet.
175
I'm surprised she hasn't turned up in some prehistoric garb.
176
You alright?
177
Keeping you up, are we?
178
Keeping you up?
179
Sorry.
180
Have you heard the phrase to coin a phrase or to coin a term?
181
It means to be the first person to say it, to invent it, to create a phrase.
182
So the man coined the phrase raining cats and dogs.
183
Someone coined that phrase at one point.
184
I'm going to clean the phrase.
185
to be a mummy in Dublin which means to be
186
so full of Guinness that you just want to sleep and sleep and sleep.
187
It's quite good actually.
188
We're currently in St Stephen's Green Park and you know what?
189
It's pretty green it's a nice little tranquil spot
190
if the busy city is too much for you just come to the park
191
oh it's the molly malone statue here
192
so this is a statue of molly malone
193
and she's from the song molly malone also known as cockles
194
and muscles and it's kind of the unofficial anthem of dublin
195
and it's about a woman who wheels her wheelbarrow through the streets selling cockles
196
and muscles and then eventually at the end she dies of a fever
197
so she's a bit of a tragic heroine i think the
198
molly malone statue thing is a very interesting case of
199
when just something just catches on and suddenly you know
200
if it pops up on TripAdvisor then suddenly you'll get a
201
lot of tourists just flocking to it taking pictures of it like I'm just looking at some people now and like
202
a lot of those people don't really care what it is
203
and have only just heard about it when they arrived in Dublin really
204
but suddenly they're all taking pictures of it
205
and interestingly it's not even old it was made in 1988
206
so it's a recent addition to the dublin trail the tourist trail of things
207
that you do um
208
so yes yeah what makes something iconic what makes something i
209
suppose i suppose something something has to be new at some point everything everything is new at some point um
210
so plan now we've only got an hour before our plane
211
so no no we've only got an hour before we need
212
to leave for the airport we've got one final hour in dublin we're going to go to love lane
213
which is uh annoyingly it was very close to where we
214
were yesterday we're going to go back there just to show you guys um
215
and then uh and then yeah to the airport
216
so we're in love lane i'm going to write smashing english up here
217
because that's what you do everyone writes stuff it's not just me doing graffiti and doing vandalism.
218
So if you come to Dublin, see if you can find it and take a picture of it and send it to us.
219
Drop in, so just come in casually for a short time, drop in for a cuppa, a cup of tea.
220
our 24 hours in dublin is nearly over we just need to get now to the airport
221
and catch a flight back home and there's a pretty easy bus
222
so hopefully all goes well with the bus
223
and we get to the airport see you at the airport see you at the airport
224
we landed safely and berwin's dad picked us up from the airport
225
so that was kind of him and now we're driving home.
226
So what did you think of Dublin?
227
Verdict.
228
My verdict is, I think Dublin, if you look really close, maybe with a walking tour or a tour guide, there's lots of history there.
229
Lots of interesting buildings, interesting facts, lots of things to see.
230
But it doesn't slap you around the face.
231
No, it's not like when you walk around Rome or something, you can very clearly see, oh, history is all around me.
232
I think Dublin's a bit more city -fied.
233
It very much feels like a city.
234
There are shops that you will recognise, restaurants, bars.
235
I think Dublin, for me personally, I think it's probably amazing, like the best time ever,
236
if you really value pub culture and live music and walking into a bar and there's someone playing live instruments.
237
And lots of people love
238
that for me it's not my dream night I'm I am
239
a bit more of a quiet night in kind of person um
240
so I I really enjoyed my time in Dublin I really enjoyed
241
because I learned a lot about the history as I was walking around I would google a lot of stuff
242
and go what does this mean what was this blah blah you don't need to do
243
that in a city like Rome for example you can just walk around
244
and the history just jumps out just yeah just jumps out at you
245
and it's made me really want to explore more of Ireland
246
like I really want to go back to Ireland I want
247
to experience rural Ireland I want to go to the beautiful scenery
248
and i want to go to the countryside so like the west coast
249
and like go away places
250
so it won't be the last time we go to ireland no definitely not um

关于本课

您正在使用跟读技巧通过视频"A Day in Dublin!
