Hey guys!
2
Welcome or welcome back to my channel.
3
I'm Claire, a native speaker from the US,
4
but I'm also an English teacher and I'm a professionally trained singer.
5
So I have been trained in the international phonetic alphabet.
6
And if you don't know what that is,
7
it is the alphabet that covers all the sounds that exist internationally for every language.
8
So of course, Some languages do not use certain sounds that others do,
9
but if you learn the phonetic symbols that match the sounds,
10
especially ones that don't exist in your native language,
11
that can really help you to better understand those sounds every time you run into them.
12
Now, one of the trickiest sounds
13
that non-native speakers struggle with in English is the voiced and unvoiced sound that is usually represented by TH.
14
So the TH sound in English is formed by placing your tongue between your teeth
15
and lightly pressing the tip of your tongue to the bottom of your front teeth.
16
To achieve the voiced TH sound,
17
gently place your fingers on your throat and feel the vibrations when you make the sound.
18
So you can feel that vibrating.
19
The unvoiced th sound you won't be able to feel any vibrations on your throat.
20
So for that one you're just pushing air through the teeth and the tongue without bringing the vocal cords together.
21
So without those vibrations.
22
So to help us practice both of these voiced and unvoiced TH sounds in English,
23
I'm going to take you through a repeat after me and then shadowing practice.
24
So it's pretty simple.
25
First, you will just repeat after me and then you will say it
26
with me at the same time matching my pronunciation and inflection.
27
So that's a practice we call shadowing.
28
If you aren't familiar with my other shadowing videos,
29
I have a playlist here on my channel that I will link here.
30
So go check that out if you found this practice useful.
31
All right, let's get started.
32
English made easy with Claire.
33
So first, repeat after me.
34
This year, this year, our first word here uses the voiced TH sound.
35
So you will feel the vibrations.
36
This, this year.
37
My mother wanted to do something special for her birthday.
38
Good.
39
So here we have another voiced TH sound.
40
Mother.
41
Mother.
42
So this one's a little bit faster because it's in the middle of the word,
43
but you still should feel those vibrations.
44
Mother.
45
Um, mother.
46
And then the second word with TH uses the unvoiced sound.
47
And again, this one is quick because it comes in the middle of the word.
48
Birthday.
49
Birthday.
50
No vibrations.
51
Birth.
52
Birthday.
53
Okay, let's say that whole sentence again.
54
Repeat after me.
55
This year my mother wanted to do something special for her birthday.
56
The first thing she said was...
57
The first thing, thing, unvoiced,
58
the first thing she said was,
59
I don't want a big party.
60
I don't want a big party.
61
Instead, we drove through the countryside to a quiet little spa.
62
Threw, through.
63
That's an unvoiced TH sound.
64
Instead, we drove through the countryside to a quiet little spa.
65
Repeat again.
66
Even though it was simple.
67
Though, though.
68
This word looks a lot like through,
69
but it has the voiced TH sound.
70
So we'll feel that here.
71
Though.
72
Though.
73
Even though it was simple,
74
it felt like the perfect getaway.
75
It felt like the perfect getaway.
76
In the afternoon, in the afternoon,
77
we decided to sunbathe by the pool.
78
So just after initially saying this word sunbathe,
79
can you guess if it's voiced or unvoiced?
80
Say it a couple times to yourself.
81
This one is voiced.
82
We can feel the vibration.
83
Sunbathe.
84
Sunbathe.
85
And it might not be so obvious because it comes at the end of the word.
86
We wouldn't generally in rapid speech really pronounce it slowly bathe, right?
87
But this one is voiced.
88
Sunbathe.
89
Sunbathe.
90
In the afternoon, we decided to sunbathe by the pool.
91
Later on, she enjoyed a long, relaxing bath.
92
So here, bath looks very similar to bathe,
93
but they have different pronunciations.
94
Bath uses the unvoiced TH.
95
Bath.
96
Bath.
97
Later on, she enjoyed a long relaxing bath.
98
At the end of the day,
99
at the end of the day,
100
my mother smiled and said, smiled.
101
That's an often mispronounced word.
102
Smiled.
103
This was exactly what I needed.
104
This was exactly what I needed.
105
Repeat the whole sentence after me.
106
At the end of the day,
107
my mother smiled and said,
108
this was exactly what I needed.
109
Okay, now for our shadowing practice.
110
So you are going to say the whole story with me at the same time.
111
Repeat this part of the video as many times as you like until you feel comfortable,
112
especially with the voiced and unvoiced TH sound.
113
Here we go.
114
This year, my mother wanted to do something special for her birthday.
115
The first thing she said was,
116
I don't want a big party.
117
Instead, we drove through the countryside to a quiet little spa.
118
Even though it was simple,
119
it felt like the perfect getaway.
120
In the afternoon, we decided to sunbathe by the pool.
121
Later on, she enjoyed a long, relaxing bath.
122
At the end of the day,
123
my mother smiled and said,
124
this was exactly what I needed.
125
All right, so I hope that repeat after me
126
and shadowing practice helped you a little bit better to understand the th sounds in English
127
and the difference between the voiced and unvoiced.
128
It's a really tricky sound if you don't have it in your native language,
129
so don't be discouraged if you aren't getting it immediately after this video.
130
Like I said, you can repeat this video as many times as you need
131
and practice slowly trying the different sounds on your own.
132
And over time, the more shadowing practice you do,
133
the more comfortable and confident you will be in producing these sounds.
