1
Hello and welcome back to another Shadowing Practice or welcome if it's your first time.
2
My name's Claire and I'm an English teacher and a native speaker from the United States.
3
Now some of you have been in the comments saying that my introductions in these videos are too long.
4
So I hear you and I'm going to keep this one super short.
5
If this is your first time joining me for Shadowing Practice, check out my Shadowing Practice playlist which I'll link here
6
and you can watch any of those introductions on those videos where I explain how this video will work,
7
what the expectations are, what shadowing is if you don't know.
8
But for this one, we're going to jump right in.
9
English made easy with Claire.
10
All right, so a big request from a lot of you is the ed endings of verbs.
11
So the focus for this shadowing practice is to take a look at all three
12
sounds that the ed ending in English can have.
13
As you may already know, English is not a phonetic language, which is why shadowing is such a useful practice, particularly for English.
14
And so when you see an ed at the end of a word, it doesn't always sound the same.
15
But good news for you, there are some rules that I can share with you
16
that will tell you which sound the ending of a certain word takes.
17
So the shadowing practice I have for you today has all three ed ending sounds.
18
I'm going to point them out to you.
19
We're going to practice pronouncing them together.
20
First, you're going to repeat after me.
21
The other day I decided to bake some cookies because I'd invited a friend over.
22
Your turn.
23
Let's say it again.
24
The other day I decided to bake some cookies because I'd invited a friend over.
25
I then started cleaning the kitchen and the rest of the apartment.
26
I then started cleaning the kitchen and the rest of the apartment because I wanted the place to look nice.
27
Because I wanted the place to look nice.
28
Okay.
29
So in this paragraph, we have four verbs that end in ED and they all take the same sound.
30
Id.
31
Id.
32
If I say it very slow, decided.
33
invited, started, wanted.
34
So you can hear that each ending is id.
35
Now you'll know a verb takes this sound as the ending if it ends in a T or a D.
36
So take the verb decide.
37
Okay, it ends in an E, but it ends in a D sound.
38
The E is silent, right?
39
So because it ends in this D sound, in the past tense form, it's going to take the id sound ending.
40
Same with the verb invite.
41
Again, it has a silent e, it ends with a t sound.
42
So it takes the id ending.
43
Start and want end in t's, end with the letter t.
44
So it takes this id ending.
45
Now you may have noticed I didn't pronounce a hard T when the verb has a T.
46
And that's because in American English, we tend to drop the T if it ends in a word or if it is in the middle of a word,
47
it becomes a flap T.
48
So it sounds like a D.
49
Invited.
50
Started.
51
Now the word wanted.
52
This one would be maybe a little bit of an exception.
53
We would drop the T altogether.
54
Wanted.
55
Wanted.
56
You could pronounce it.
57
Or I probably would pronounce the T.
58
Wanted.
59
A very soft T.
60
Wanted.
61
Wanted.
62
Okay, so there's your first rule.
63
You can remember if a verb ends in a D or a T or a D or T sound, then it would take the id ending.
64
So let's shadow this paragraph together.
65
Say it at the same time as I do.
66
Ready?
67
The other day, I decided to bake some cookies because I'd invited a friend over.
68
I then started cleaning the kitchen and the rest of the apartment because I wanted the place to look nice.
69
Now before we move on to the next section, I want to point out a couple phrases in here just for a learning experience in general for English.
70
So first we have the phrase the other day
71
and that's just a general term we use to say a few days ago or a day in the recent past.
72
So you could say the other day I went grocery shopping or the other day I saw a movie.
73
You're not telling us what specific day it is, but you're just generally saying that it happened in the recent past.
74
So that's a great phrase to know.
75
And then the other expression I wanted to point out to you was I'd invited a friend over.
76
This word over, What does that mean?
77
Well, it implies that you invited a friend to your house.
78
If you say, I invited a friend over, it means the same as I invited a friend to my place.
79
Or you could say, I invited a friend over to my place.
80
Or simply, I invited a friend over.
81
All right, let's move on to another ed ending sound.
82
Repeat after me.
83
My friend had recently moved and now lived nearby.
84
My friend had recently moved and now lived nearby.
85
She arrived right on time.
86
Again, she arrived right on time.
87
I opened the door, smiled, and told her to come in.
88
I opened the door, smiled, and told her to come in.
89
Okay, so maybe you've already noticed what sound these ED endings take.
90
Moved, lived, arrived, opened, smiled.
91
The ED ending is simply pronounced as d.
92
And you can know this because verbs that end with a voiced sound take this d ending.
93
So the verbs move, live and arrive all have the voiced vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv20 so You can actually make a sound on those consonants.
94
So that's what makes it voiced.
95
Open.
96
We can make sound on the n sound.
97
So it's voiced.
98
And a little bit trickier is smile.
99
The L sound, yeah, it's voiced.
100
We can make sound on it.
101
Because they end in these voiced sounds, we know that when they are in the past tense in this ED form,
102
the ED ending sounds like D.
103
Now in rapid speech, we're not going to overly pronounce the D sound, right?
104
You may have noticed I didn't read it as my friend recently moved and now lived nearby.
105
It almost sounds like I drop the d ending.
106
But of course, it's useful for you to know that these verbs are not moved or livid.
107
Okay, that's incorrect.
108
It's moved and lived.
109
but in rapid speech the d is almost dropped live nearby
110
live nearby it almost sounds like i dropped the d sound entirely
111
and then i'm just saying live nearby you can think of it
112
that way definitely you still want to have the intention of speaking in the past tense
113
so that the intention of the past tense comes across, arrived right on time, opened the door.
114
Okay, let's shadow this paragraph.
115
My friend had recently moved and now lived nearby.
116
She arrived right on time.
117
I opened the door, smiled, and told her to come in.
118
An expression I want to point out here is come in.
119
So if someone does come to your house, you can use that expression.
120
Come in, right?
121
That's an invitation for them to enter the house.
122
Come on in, you could also say.
123
Come in.
124

145
Okay, with that out of the way, let's keep going with our shadowing practice and our final ed ending sound.
146
Repeat after me.
147
She looked around and asked, is something burning?
148
She looked around and asked, is something burning?
149
I stopped what I was doing and noticed I'd completely forgotten about the cookies I'd baked.
150
I stopped what I was doing and noticed I'd completely forgotten about the cookies I'd baked.
151
Okay, so the verbs ending in ed we have here are looked, asked, stopped, and baked.
152
Maybe you have already noticed, you can already hear these ed endings sound like t.
153
And have you noticed what they all have in common?
154
What is the rule here?
155
Well, if you said that all of these verbs end in unvoiced sounds, then you would be correct.
156
So before we had the verbs that end in the voiced sound, they took the d ending.
157
If the ending is unvoiced, they take the t ending.
158
So look, c-c-c.
159
You can't make sound on that consonant sound.
160
Stop, p-p-p.
161
That one's also unvoiced.
162
notice s unvoiced.
163
So if they have an unvoiced ending, they take the t sound.
164
So let's go ahead and shadow this paragraph together.
165
Say it with me.
166
She looked around and asked, is something burning?
167
I stopped what I was doing and noticed I'd completely forgotten about the cookies I'd baked.
168
Repeat after me.
169
We ended up going out for some cake and coffee instead.
170
We ended up going out for some cake and coffee instead.
171
That's the last time I try to bake myself.
172
That's the last time I try to bake myself.
173
Okay, so we have one verb in this section that ends in ed, ended, ended.
174
And I want you to let me know in the comments which ending it takes and why.
175
Okay, let's shadow this final section together.
176
We ended up going out for some cake and coffee instead.
177
That's the last time I try to bake myself.
178
All right, guys.
179
So like every shadowing practice, let's end this one reading the entire story all the way through.
180
This part of the video is super helpful to repeat many, many times until you feel comfortable with all of the pronunciation
181
and specifically the verbs ending in ed which was our focus today
182
but of course just the overall intonation
183
and flow of my speaking as a native speaker if you match
184
that you will sound more natural as well here we go
185
the other day i decided to bake some cookies because i'd invited a friend over
186
I then started cleaning the kitchen and the rest of the apartment because I wanted the place to look nice.
187
My friend had recently moved and now lived nearby.
188
She arrived right on time.
189
I opened the door, smiled, and told her to come in.
190
She looked around and asked, is something burning?
191
I stopped what I was doing and noticed I'd completely forgotten about the cookies I'd baked.
192
We ended up going out for some cake and coffee instead.
193
That's the last time I tried to bake myself.
194
All right, I hope that shattering practice cleared up some of your questions about the verbs ending in ed.
195
Thank you so much for joining me today.
196
I'll see you in the next video.
197
Bye for now.
198
Thank you.
