Hi, my name is Evie and this is a video in slow English to help you practice your listening comprehension.
2
What is this?
3
A big curve.
4
Today we are in Bath
5
which in my opinion is probably the most beautiful city here in the UK or well at least in England.
6
We're currently standing in this really small park but I thought
7
that we could just check out some of the most important places here in the city.
8
So Bath is a really famous city for its architecture.
9
It has some buildings from the Roman era and also some buildings from the Georgian period.
10
So that's like the 18th century, the 1700s.
11
Right now we are on our way to the Royal Crescent which is one of the most iconic sections of this city.
12
You will see when we get there why this area is so iconic,
13
why it's so special.
14
So let's go for a walk in the sunshine.
15
we're gonna head this way through the park
16
and yeah I will show you a little bit of the city
17
and we will just explore a little bit of Bath today
18
We're now walking into one of the parks which is on the way to where?
19
The Royal Crescent.
20
You can see here above the park entrance these lions.
21
You can see the flowers on the tree.
22
We call that blossom.
23
So here's the sign for the royal crescent.
24
A crescent is like the shape that these buildings are in,
25
like a big curve.
26
And these are residential houses.
27
So people do live here.
28
Very rich people live here.
29
Obviously all of the city is not quite as as grand as this,
30
as kind of fancy as this,
31
as we would say posh.
32
So posh is a word actually that only exists in English.
33
Posh is basically like upper class,
34
kind of rich, fancy And these buildings here are definitely posh Honestly,
35
you can tell by the cars There are a lot of Range Rovers Which is a posh,
36
a posh car
37
People will often use the way that you pronounce the word bath To tell if you are posh or not So,
38
the kind of important letter here is the A.
39
If you are posh, you will pronounce this city as Bath, Bath, like this.
40
And if you are from the countryside in this area,
41
if you are from the countryside,
42
you will say Bath, like this,
43
bath if you're wondering which one I say
44
when I speak on these videos I tend to use an accent
45
that is more modern RP so a little bit more posh
46
so in most of these videos you will hear me saying bath
47
but if I have a glass of wine if I'm with friends
48
if I'm speaking with my family I'm much more likely to
49
say bath where I'm from in Cornwall that's more our accent
50
so we say bath we say grass but
51
if you were posh you would say bath and grass grass or grass bath or bath it's also really sunny today
52
nice like blue sky
53
so all of the doors in the royal crescent are
54
white you can see all of the doors are white except for this one at number 22
55
so apparently in the 1970s the lady at this house
56
number 22 she painted her door yellow and it upset this city
57
so much that she went to court
58
so she had to go to court to basically argue that she was allowed to paint her own front door
59
yellow people were worried that it was kind of breaking tradition so
60
breaking that it was breaking the tradition of the kind of classic white door
61
that the rest of the buildings have obviously she did win the trial so
62
there is only one house here now number 22
63
which has a yellow front door kind of interesting no
64
so it's still very early well
65
it's not it's not very early what time is it like 4 p.m
66
it's like 4 p.m so we have a few hours until the sun sets
67
so the royal crescent is behind me now
68
and we are going to head into the main city i will try and film but i'm shy okay i'm shy
69
so for now let's head back into the city let's go back into bath
70
or bath we are walking back into the city
71
but i'm going to teach you a word that you will never ever use in english
72
okay do you see this this thing here made of stone is an obelisk it's an obelisk
73
because honestly i don't even know why but that like stone pillar is an obelisk you will probably never use that
74
The pub is called The Raven,
75
which is a type of bird,
76
like a black bird, like a crow.
77
There's a gin bar.
78
How funny.
79
It's closed.
80
No gin.
81
No gin today.
82
It's so peaceful.
83
A cafe, cookies.
84
Open, coffee and cookies.
85
And then the bridge.
86
we are now walking towards the abbey the abbey is basically just like a big church here in bath
87
it is quite an impressive building so i will try try
88
and grab some clips for you
89
but it has these amazing walls made of bath stone
90
which is that light beige stone and it's right next to the old Roman baths it's literally right next door
91
It's a cafe.
92
Where is it?
93
They were fully booked.
94
So behind me are the Roman baths,
95
which are why this city is called Bath.
96
Here in Bath there are hot springs.
97
So water is coming up from the centre of the earth to the surface the surface
98
and the water is warm okay it's hot they're natural hot springs the Roman baths
99
that are here are original from like 70 AD really old really impressive and they're right behind me
100
so we are now at the baths that this city is named after so let's let's go in
101
We are here at the hot springs.
102
this temple we are sitting in right now is Roman so it's from about 70 AD do you remember the exact day?
103
73 so the temple we are sitting in right now is from 73 79 AD
104
these hot springs are baths okay so these are Roman baths people used to swim
105
or bathe in the water
106
and it was a really important part of Roman culture it was an important part of Roman social culture.
107
So this is a way that you would make friends or kind of spend time with other people.
108
There was also a religious element to these hot springs.
109
So something interesting that we learned is that people used to use this hot spring to curse other people.
110
So they would write in metal the names of people that they wanted the goddess of this hot spring,
111
the goddess of this hot spring to curse.
112
And people have found them thousands and thousands of years later, these curses.
113
so for example people are cursing somebody who stole their cloak
114
or they're cursing somebody who i don't know all sorts of people nowadays you cannot swim in the water
115
because this is a museum but there are other spas in the city
116
that you can use to go swimming we actually walked past
117
a hot spring that you can swim in earlier on today
118
but what an impressive building and so cool
119
that you can sit here so close to the water it's amazing and you can see all of the
120
like what are those with the flames what are those called
121
torches they have torches burning all around the outside of the spring
122
and statues are watching from over the top of the balcony it's incredibly cool it's really really amazing to to be here
123
Honestly, we are in here with the ruins of the old Roman temple.
124
It kind of like stinks.
125
Like it kind of smells bad in here.
126
I think it's probably the hot springs I have no idea
127
so we are now leaving we are now leaving the baths but yeah super gorgeous
128
but it's time it's time to go okay
129
so behind me is the bath and well the bath house
130
and I think honestly it's time to get a drink and get some dinner as well we
131
and now we are going to grab something to eat I think it's time to have dinner
132
so that is basically the plan now I just wanted to say thank you
133
so much for watching and I will see you in the next one oh and film there that's super cute too
134
What was that accent?
135
What was what?
136
That accent.
137
I just really thought that the...
138

139
