1
Today we're pitting the greatest minds at CrunchLabs, - Oh man.
2
- against the most classic engineering challenge, finding a way to drop an egg from really, really high without breaking it.
3
Cause they can only build with whatever supplies they can afford.
4
- Nine dollars?!
5
- from a random store that's picked for them by the CrunchLab's spinning wheel of destiny.
6
- Toy engineers.
7
- Hello. - So I actually made a video about all the physics on how to win an egg drop about 12 years ago.
8
Have any of you seen that?
9
Wow... - I saw it, Mark.
10
- Thank you, Bob.
11
OK, so there's three arrows, you each get a color, it'll make it easy.
12
You're red, you're yellow, you guys are blue.
13
Here we go.
14
Wheel of ultimate destiny.
15
- 200! 200!
16
- Come on. - So Bam and Nick got $50, Adam and Danny got $150 and Danielle and Jack...
17
- 15 dollars?!
18
- 15 is crazy!
19
- Let's go, $150.
20
- There's one more catch.
21
You're not all going to the same store.
22
Why don't we start here with Team Blue, a hardware store, that's good.
23
- 15 dollars?!
24
- Yeah. Team red.
25
- Yeah! Easy! Easy.
26
- That's pretty good, and Team yellow.
27
- I hope you're hungry.
28
- There's a McDonald's hardware store, right?
29
- And today, the prize is a limited edition gold iPad.
30
In fact, only four have ever been made in history.
31
- I don't trust you.
32
- I know there's a bit of the history with the prize we've given.
33
The winner does get a Toyota! A Toy Yoda.
34
- Oh Mark. - That is a 24 carrot, goal necklace.
35
It's your Hawaiian Crews.
36
It's an iPad.
37
- I am an iPad kid.
38
- OK, grab your eggs.
39
The cars are waiting- Not those eggs.
40
That's my lunch.
41
- What? - Bob?
42
- What?! - What is that?
43
- Those are fake.
44
- No way. - These are actual bona fide ostrich- - Oh my gosh, - Bam!
45
- These are heavy!
46
- Once the ostrich eggs have been distributed, - Get the heck out of here!
47
- It was time for the toy engineers to purchase their supplies.
48
- What are we doing, dude?
49
- And after buckling up for safety, - Your egg-ellence.
50
- they tried to think of some good supplies.
51
- I think we want foam and stuff.
52
- There's the boxes that are like- - Like that you get the nuggets in?
53
- That they could get with their cash.
54
- So 15 dollars.
55
- 15 dollars.
56
- Or lack thereof.
57
- They're not gonna think that this is weird having this giant ostrich egg.
58
- But soon enough, it was time to get shopping.
59
- Here's a strategy, we just throw everything in here and then choose at the end.
60
- I feel like we want to be a little selective.
61
- Keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks free.
62
- What could be a parachute?
63
- Wait, we can just order on this.
64
- Let's go through the entire menu, y'all.
65
- And immediately...
66
- Ketchup packets!
67
- McDonald's team made an incredible discovery.
68
- They're zero dollars!
69
We could have infinite ketchup packets.
70
- Yo... - What's this?
71
- Bam, let's start with some foam.
72
- I'm sorry.
73
- And while the art world was full of tempting potential splurges.
74
- Ooh... - It's 20 dollars.
75
- Wait, ostrich?
76
- That's 45 dollars.
77
- This would be so perfect.
78
Look at this.
79
- How much was it?
80
- I don't know.
81
- So a roll of duct tape would be half of our budget.
82
- OK. - The hardware team was finding that for them, - Everything's so expensive.
83
- It was all a splurge.
84
- This is the kind of stuff we would want, but that's more than our budget right there.
85
- I was done with sauces?
86
- And it seemed like this legendary McDonald's order hack might never end.
87
- Like, I didn't even know McDonald's served preserves.
88
- I think we gotta get 10 forks, 10 knives, 10 spoons.
89
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, 55 burgers.
90
- Mmm... - Until it did.
91
- They caught on to us.
92
Oh boy. - Hey, how's it going?
93
We kind of have a big order.
94
- But the hardware team found their own cheat codes.
95
- Can we get three of the big ones?
96
- How much do these cost?
97
- Oh those are free.
98
- Oh, these are free?
99
- Yep. - I'll just take a few more.
100
Oh, the samples are free!
101
I'll take a few of these.
102
Anything that you're trying to get rid of?
103
Hey! - Yeah, thank you so much.
104
- Ultimately, all the teams found, - Can we have a big bag for this?
105
We're trying to support this from a drop, - Is this real?
106
- Yeah. - No way.
107
- That the most efficient way to stretch their budget.
108
- Yes! You're the best.
109
- Relying on the kindness of strangers.
110
- I was gonna see if you guys would like this?
111
- A cardboard box!
112
Oh my goodness, thank you.
113
- Thank you so much.
114
- You are an angel and a treasure.
115
- And they headed home in high spirits.
116
- No, I'm gonna get attached to this egg.
117
- They hoped wouldn't come crashing to the ground during the first official CrunchLab's ostrich egg drop competition.
118
- Welcome back!
119
What did you guys get?
120
- Team Michael's had foam blocks, twine, duct tape, a bunch of balloons, and some trash bags.
121
- $50 buys you a lot.
122
- Team hardware store got a bucket, some cardboard, some tape, a tarp, and a whole lot of junk for free.
123
- What did you actually buy here for $15?
124
- The tape was like a third of the budget.
125
- Wow, that's a lot of ketchup.
126
- And Team McDonald's, - Keep going.
127
- Only a third of it.
128
- Got lots of ketchup, 10 cheeseburger Happy Meals with fries or apple slices, 10 drink cups, 1 trash bag, 16 bags of ice, 2 cardboard boxes, and even more ketchup.
129
- Harry Potter bag!
130
You have 30 minutes.
131
- 30 minutes?!
132
- 30?! - Clock starts...
133
Now! - Oh man.
134
- The question is like, how do we attach everything together?
135
- What are you thinking?
136
- We've got an egg in a bucket, that's all we've got so far.
137
- OK. - The problem the toy engineers are ultimately trying to solve is energy management.
138
- There is a certain amount of energy holding these molecules in the shell together, Bob.
139
- When the egg falls, the gravity pulling it to the ground increases its kinetic energy, and if that kinetic energy is greater than the bonding energy of the eggshell molecules holding the eggshell together, it will break on impact, which leaves you only two options to stay below the eggshell break line.
140
You either reduce the kinetic energy by slowing it down in the air, like with a parachute, - Big old tripod, parachute on top.
141
- or you find ways to spread out that energy over time.
142
- So maybe we have to make like an outer shell with a foam core.
143
- Ooh, yeah, maybe we attach the balloon to the foam core.
144
- Yeah. - This is basically the whole reason for airbags, and it's also why long jumpers land in sand.
145
Instead of on asphalt, you basically take longer to dissipate that energy, which keeps those harmful energy spikes much lower.
146
- Mm. - You got apples in there?
147
- We'd be willing to trade.
148
- You can barter.
149
Bartering is accepted.
150
- Are you guys partial to apples?
151
- Don't trade anything.
152
- I know what I have that you want.
153
- Is that packing tape?
154
- I do want packing tape.
155
- How many apples?
156
- Danielle! Danielle, tape is our main resource.
157
- I'm coming for your apples.
158
- Oh, is this perfect or what?
159
- Are you sure these aren't too stiff?
160
- Well, we have balloons.
161
It's gonna take a while to blow up the balloons, but...
162
- We wanna do a real life test off the balcony, so we gotta make a 3.4 pound thing... out of what though?
163
Out of ice?
164
- Oh yeah! Ready Adam?
165
- Ready. - Oh, let's observe this test.
166
- Does this look good?
167
- Yeah. - Crack.
168
- How'd that feel, guys?
169
- I think it would have survived.
170
- Yeah? - I think it's done.
171
- Can we borrow a bag of ice?
172
- You gotta barter for it.
173
- And while Bam didn't seem interested in bartering.
174
- No, we're not.
175
- Nicholas was so tempted, he got distracted.
176
- What was that?!
177
- Air compressor.
178
- I'm so sorry.
179
- And at this point, - Halfway!
180
- No way. - The toy engineers really had to focus, so I tried to help.
181
- Hey! Wait! The balloons! The balloons!
182
- Oh, it came right back to me!
183
I've thought of this.
184
Oh, too hard.
185
- OK, yeah, you can keep shooting, it's OK.
186
- The CrunchLabs Build Box rapid-fire crossbow that you could build alongside me, where we learn all about the engineering principles of tension and latches.
187
- You guys do know that Camp CrunchLabs is coming back, which means you can get the boxes, not just every month, but how often, Bam?
188
- Every week?
189
- That's right.
190
- And this year, along with our most epic science explosions yet, you got another chance to win the platinum ticket, so make sure you tune in.
191
- Something to keep you busy for the summer.
192
Do you get nervous when you look over and see this?
193
- They started getting a little closer, and I keep my balloons very far away, so...
194
- It's literally taller than me.
195
- There was no size constraint on this challenge.
196
- Look, I don't wanna put my money on any group, but this one looks pretty good.
197
What have you guys been doing?
198
Where is your contraption?
199
This is all I see.
200
- We've worked really hard, - Worked really hard on this.
201
- Look, I don't wanna pick any favorites.
202
But my money's not on this crew.
203
- We need to barter for tape, honestly.
204
- And at this point in the build, people had gotten hungry, specifically hungry for apples.
205
- Are there any apples left?
206
- We need tape.
207
- How much tape does this buy?
208
- Three feet.
209
- No! - 3 ft.
210
- We only have 60!
211
- But wouldn't it be so sad if you didn't get to eat an apple today?
212
- There you go.
213
- Get your last touches in.
214
- I like that.
215
- Grab the corners.
216
We just need to tape- tape this like right... there.
217
- How are we gonna do that?
218
- Wow. - Didn't expect that, did ya?
219
- Three minutes left!
220
- Oh no, oh no.
221
- I'm panicking a little bit.
222
- Egg in. Stuff on top.
223
- I don't- I'm not scared of this.
224
I'm scared of the tape coming off.
225
- Ignore this, Danny.
226
Whoa, I said ignore it, not catch it like a ninja!
227
- 10 seconds left.
228
- 10 seconds?!
229
- 10 seconds left!!
230
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, - One!
231
- OK. - They definitely don't all look the same.
232
- To the mezzanine!
233
- The first to present their creations to us were Bam and Nick.
234
- This is Omar's first birthday.
235
- Omar is inside this block of foam.
236
- It'll hit the bottom of the balloons oriented by this parachute.
237
- He's gonna survive.
238
- This looks awfully familiar.
239
In the video I did that allegedly no one watched- - What video?
240
- Oh, the clip.
241
- And I blew up bigger balloons and then just tied it all together with some string.
242
Guess you wish you would have watched the video now, don't you?
243
Bob, do the honors.
244
OK, here we go, Bob.
245
- It was time to get cracking.
246
- Oh wow, it's pretty from down here.
247
- Omar! - CrunchLab's first ostrich egg drop in, 3, 2, 1!
248
- It was less than an elegant landing.
249
- It's stuck in my thumb.
250
- Bob!! - So I had to crack it open to see if Omar had survived his party.
251
- He's alive!
252
- Omar!! - Alright, we got a winner!
253
- Let's go!
254
- Great job.
255
- So next up, could Danielle and Jack's monstrosity, - Wow...
256
- do the same?
257
- So we call this the Free rider.
258
Most of the materials we got for free.
259
- Well, the parachute is used to orient it so it lands on its feet.
260
- To protect in the case of a tip, extra members coming out in all directions.
261
- Ah, smart.
262
This also reminds me of something that I saw in a video that again, allegedly, no one here has seen Bob.
263
- Allegedly. Boy, they used a lot of the same principles.
264
- Interesting.
265
- Maybe we're just both smart.
266
- Bob, good luck getting this up the stairs.
267
I'll be down here.
268
- Ooh! Woah, camera.
269
Wheel of Destiny.
270
- Good. - Everything's gonna be fine, kids.
271
- I don't want a premature drop.
272
- It's gonna be good.
273
- Bob's got it.
274
- It's fine.
275
Everything's great, guys.
276
- You got one leg that's...
277
- Uh... - Uh oh.
278
- Starting to get heavy.
279
- Jack go help.
280
- Got it. - Part of it was planning for the Bob factor.
281
- Ready! - Three, - two, one, Go!
282
- That was good!
283
- That was graceful.
284
- But was it graceful enough to have saved the life of poor fragile, - Does it have a name?
285
- We never named it, no, it's a nameless egg.
286
- We never named it.
287
- That is intact!
288
Two for two.
289
- And finally we had team McDonald's.
290
- Taking the trash out?
291
- Yeah... - Yeah, so there's a lot of technology going on, a lot of innovation.
292
- Yeah, here, get a load of our ketchup packets.
293
- What is that exactly?
294
- This is, this is our patented wet bag technology, and it was full of ice.
295
Now it's full of water.
296
- Does this have a name?
297
- It's the Big Mark.
298
- The Big Mark?
299
- Yeah, see, it's you!
300
- Remember that video I made 14 years ago about egg drops?
301
- I do. - Nothing in that video resembled this even in the smallest fashion.
302
- That's weird because we base this off of your video.
303
- It was a blueprint for making this right here.
304
- You guys are terrible note takers.
305
Bob. - Take the trash out.
306
- Take the sophisticated engineering out, you mean?
307
- It's a pendulum.
308
- That part's very off-putting.
309
- We thought you'd like it.
310
- OK, it was time to get serious.
311
- Bob! - Yeah!
312
- OK, it's so gross looking.
313
- So gross.
314
- From down here it's way worse.
315
Just hanging there.
316
- You're all crying.
317
- OK, and we're back.
318
OK. Alright, ready.
319
Three, two, Here we go.
320
Three, two, one.
321
- That was so loud.
322
- But was it also destructive?
323
- Is Mixie OK?
324
- Well, there's something wet.
325
Could be ketchup.
326
- And indeed, - It looks so cute!
327
- Mixie had survived.
328
- Wet bag technology.
329
- Which left us in a bit of a predicament.
330
- Good news is all of your eggs survived, bad news is I only have one gold iPad.
331
And that means it's time for a three-way tiebreaker field trip.
332
- And in this round, we were raising the stakes.
333
So after the toy engineers did some final tune-ups on their egg drop contraptions, we all stopped to see just how high.
334
- Where's Bob?
335
- Up here! We're gonna drop them from up here.
336
- Who's first?
337
- Not us. - Them.
338
- Danielle and Jack, it is.
339
- Danielle and Jack's giant spike ball would be the first to be tossed off the bridge.
340
- You got this, Bob.
341
- As long as Bob could pull it off.
342
- You gotta remember the Bob factor.
343
- Count me down!
344
- Three, two, one, - go!
345
- And this time it was not graceful.
346
- Bob the parachute!
347
- Alright, that was on Bob.
348
- It's oozing!
349
- Indeed there were clearly no survivors.
350
- Wow. - Oh my God.
351
- There's so much yolk in there.
352
- What do you guys think happened there?
353
- The parachute was supposed to be nicely spread out before launch, but instead it was in a little clump.
354
- You got to design for the Bob factor.
355
One down, two to go.
356
All right, Bob, ready?
357
- All right, count me down!
358
- Three, two, one, - Let's go!
359
- Oh, that seemed pretty good.
360
- That was good.
361
- And indeed upon checking, - I feel no yoke.
362
We're good.
363
- Let's go!
364
Happy second birthday, Omar.
365
- Bob, bring out the Big Mark!
366
- We're the only team out here with WBT.
367
- What's the WBT?
368
- It's the wet bag technology.
369
- It's true.
370
- OK, are we ready?!
371
- Three, two, one!
372
- Actually, I think the WBT came through.
373
- Wow. It burst so that Mixie didn't.
374
- But once I dug through all the trash.
375
- No way! - So, to be clear, This landed on the bottom, - And hit the bag!
376
- And one thing saved it!
377
- WBT! - And for the final round, - I'm holding a knife.
378
- we added a twist.
379
- Because...
380
- No! - No, our parachute, our parachutes!
381
- Mark! We need that!
382
- No parachutes.
383
- I would be removing both the parachutes and the - Cut the sack, cut the sack!
384
- No, don't, I'm not cutting the bag.
385
Here we go!
386
- So let's see how that changes things.
387
- Are we ready?
388
- We're getting an iPad, Omar.
389
- Three! Two!
390
One! I love the lone balloon.
391
- Had Omar celebrated his final day?
392
- Happy 4th birthday, Omar!
393
- iPad, iPad!
394
- Omar! iPad kid!
395
- But could Omar match the WBT?
396
- Alright, trash for the win.
397
- Three, two one!
398
- I think they're OK!
399
- Right on the bag!
400
- And although I felt liquid, - It smells like ketchup.
401
- It could be WBT remnants, or it could be - Uh oh.
402
Mixie, I hate to see it.
403
That feels like a clean break to me.
404
You know what?
405
You made it way farther than anyone expected.
406
Well done. Well done.
407
- Thanks, Mark.
408
- Congratulations, Bam and Nicholas, as promised...
409
- Happy birthday.
410
- Happy birthday, Omar!
411
- You have...
412
a limited edition...
413
gold plated iPad.
414
- The plate!
415
The plate is...
416
- More of an eye patch than an iPad.
417
- Yeah... Winners pick up.
418
- Yeah. - Wait, what?
419
- All right.
420
- See ya. - No, I don't think, I don't think that's how it works- - You guys are winners.
421
You have your iPad.
422
- OK, OK, here, Bam.
423
- What the heck!!
424
- It feels good not to waste food.
425
- I love a cold burger.
