1
Have you ever wondered about hep C?
2
Well, millions of people in the U.S are living with it, and many don't even know.
3
That's because hep C can live in your body for years without showing symptoms.
4
But without treatment, it can lead to serious liver problems, cancer, and even death.
5
The good news?
6
Hep C is preventable, curable, And today's treatments are easier and more effective than ever.
7
What is hepatitis C?
8
Hep C is a virus passed from one person to another through infected blood.
9
The virus is small but tough.
10
Even a tiny invisible drop of blood can carry it, and it can live on certain types of surfaces for weeks.
11
Here are three important steps everyone can take to protect themselves and others from getting the virus.
12
If you use drugs, whether by injecting, snorting, smoking, or any other way, it's important to only use your own equipment.
13
This includes syringes, straws, pipes, and anything used to prepare or use drugs.
14
Sharing these items is the most common way hep C is spread, but it's not the only way.
15
When tattoo or piercing artists use non-sterile equipment, hep C can spread.
16
This includes needles, tools, ink, and surfaces.
17
Toothbrushes, razors, and nail clippers can also hide tiny drops of infected blood and shouldn't be shared.
18
And although rare, Hep C can be spread during sex if blood is present.
19
Condoms, other barriers, and lube can reduce the risk.
20
But Hep C is not spread through casual contact, like shaking hands, kissing, or sharing living space or eating utensils.
21
Anyone can get Hep C and the only way to know if you have Hep C is to get tested.
22
You may be able to get tested and treated for Hep C in places you already know like health departments,
23
harm reduction programs, primary care and mobile clinics, or substance use disorder treatment clinics.
24
You can even start Hep C treatment while taking medication for an opioid use disorder, like methadone or buprenorphine.
25
But it can still be hard to get places where treatment is available.
26
And maybe you haven't gotten treatment because other things can feel more important.
27
Or you may not know that Hep C is making you sick.
28
Some jails or prisons offer testing and treatment, but not always.
29
And while some people have been denied care in the past due to substance use, this is changing.
30
There are providers who will treat you with the respect and care you deserve, even if you've been denied hepatitis C treatment in the past.
31
Today's treatments cure 95% of hep C infections and are easy to take.
32
Just a few pills taken daily for 8 to 12 weeks.
33
Most health insurance covers it and people who use drugs shouldn't be denied treatment.
34
If you have Hep C, treatment is a really good way to protect your health and the health of those around you.
35
You deserve to feel better and to live a long, healthy life.
36
Hep C can be hard to talk about, but the more we learn about it, the more we talk about it, the easier it will become for people to seek treatment and to heal.
37
Get tested.
38
Get cured.
39
Don't wait.
