This is a separating funnel.

We can use it to separate liquids where they have a very distinct

separation cut off there so in this case i have oil

and water oil and water are immiscible that means they don't mix

if you shook this up they would separate back out water below

because it's more dense and the oil on top

because it's less dense so

because we can very easily see difference of color we can

use a separating funnel to separate them we just have a tap down here we can turn the tap

and let the liquids drain out when this mark where the distinction between the oil

and water when that reaches the tap we simply turn the tap off

and we'll be left with the oil still in the separating funnel

and water down in the beaker underneath so let's just do

that quickly we need to remove the lid first of all

if something is going to leave the separating funnel some air

needs to be able to go in to take its place

so we need to take the lid off and then we open the tap and we just watch

and when that yellow reaches the tap we will close the tap the water is dripping out

we close it and we still have our oil in the separating funnel and the water down on the beaker

So that is a separating funnel.
