7
So Beth, how are you this week?
8
I'm very good, thank you.
9
How are you, Neil?
10
I'm very well, thank you.
11
What are we talking about today?
12
We are talking about how much we follow the news.
13
Ah, the news.
14
OK, so what do we mean by follow the news?
15
it on the radio or watch it on TV quite regularly.
16
Yes, and you can also follow sports, can't you?
17
So, if you like a particular sport, For example, football team, you might check your phone a lot to find out the score,
18
to follow and see how they're doing.
19
Yeah, exactly.
20
So Neil, do you follow the news?
21
Yes, I think it's difficult not to follow the news.
22
First thing in the morning I lurk on my phone to see
23
if anything big has happened overnight and then i check a lot during the day just to see what's happening.
24
So I do follow news.
25
How about you?
26
Yes, I'm the same, so I get notifications on my phone throughout the day,
27
but sometimes I find that that's a little bit too much.
28
Sometimes you need a break when you're working and you don't want to
29
see the news all the time and my phone does notify me a lot about the news.
30
Yeah, I think
31
you can have too much news and it can be not very good for you to read lots of
32
usually quite bad news.
33
Yes, definitely.
34
So why do you like to follow the news even though it can be too sad?
35
That's a very good question.
36
I think it's a bit of a habit.
37
It's a bit addictive and I think We sometimes feel like we need to know what's happening.
38
even if we have actually no control over what is happening.
39
Yeah, I completely agree because even though I get notifications and I...
40
read the news, I sometimes feel like I still don't know enough about what's going on
41
because there's so much information out there and
42
so many different ways to get the news that it's not enough to just read one article.
43
There's so much information that you want to understand.
44
news habits changed since you started.
45
working at the BBC.
46
Yes, I think they definitely have.
47
I think I probably pay more attention to the news now than I did in the past.
48
And for example, I already knew some information about certain topics,
49
but now I want to learn even more.
50
So I try to pay more attention to things that maybe I wasn't as interested in, in the past.
51
see me and you pay more attention to the news?
52
Well, I used to be a journalist at the BBC,
53
so probably I used to pay more attention or follow the news more than I do now,
54
because now I make these programmes about English.
55
Maybe it's good that you don't follow the news as much as you did, because it's not always good.
56
It's not.
57
It's often bad news.
58
OK, let's recap the vocabulary we learned during the conversation.
59
We had follow the news, which means to be interested in the news.
60
We used to and to means more than is needed of something.
61
So I watch too much news.
62
Yes.
63
We also had enough, which means as much as is needed of something.
64
So, If you think you watch Enough news.
65
You don't need more and you don't need less.
66
And we've had already, which means before now.
67
Yes, I said that before I worked at the BBC, I already...
68
followed quite a bit of news.
69
And I can't believe it is already the end of this episode and it's the end of the series.
70
Yes, that's sad news.
