So today I'm gonna talk about American sports.
7
Many foreigners don't know much about American sports.
8
That's why this is a good topic to discuss.
9
I'm gonna talk about three American sports.
10
Basketball, baseball, and football.
11
These are the most popular sports in the US.
12
First let's talk about basketball.
13
Actually this sport is popular in some other countries too.
14
For example it's popular in some European and Asian countries but it's more popular in America.
15
In the US our Our professional basketball league is called the NBA.
16
The NBA has 30 teams, 29 American teams and one Canadian team, the Toronto Raptors.
17
You probably know some of the famous NBA teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors.
18
When I was younger, I was a big Lakers fan.
19
I started watching their games when I was six years old.
20
My favorite players were Shaq and Kobe.
21
You might know those names.
22
So the rules of basketball are pretty simple.
23
You try to shoot the ball into the hoop and you defend your hoop.
24
If you score from close, it's two points.
25
If you score from far away, it's three points.
26
And if you score a foul shot or free throw, it's one point.
27
The team who scores more points wins.
28
Easy right?
29
When I was a kid, I played basketball a lot.
30
I was tall, so this really helped me.
31
If you're tall, you have an advantage.
32
Nowadays, I don't play basketball anymore.
33
Okay, now let's talk about baseball.
34
In the past, baseball was the most popular sport in America, but today, more Americans watch football.
35
In the US, our professional baseball league is called the MLB.
36
The MLB has 30 teams, just like the NBA.
37
Baseball is popular in some countries outside the US.
38
For example, people in the Caribbean love baseball, and it's also popular in some Asian countries.
39
How about you?
40
Do you like baseball?
41
So the rules of baseball are complicated.
42
There's no time in baseball.
43
We don't have two halves or four quarters.
44
Instead, there are nine innings.
45
In each inning, both teams have the chance to play on offense and defense.
46
I won't try to explain all the positions, but I will talk about the pitcher and batter.
47
The pitcher is the person who throws the ball and the batter is the person who hits the ball.
48
The batter tries to hit the ball hard and far.
49
The pitcher doesn't want the batter to hit the ball.
50
There are many more rules and they're very complicated but if you watch a few baseball games you'll start to understand.
51
I'm not good at baseball but I like going to baseball games.
52
It's really fun to watch a baseball game in a baseball stadium.
53
Okay, lastly let's talk about football.
54
Remember that in the US football is not soccer.
55
When we say football, we're talking about American football.
56
Today, football is the most popular sport in America.
57
More people watch football than any other sport.
58
Nowadays, it's becoming popular in other countries too.
59
Is American football popular in your country?
60
So, the rules of football are really, really complicated.
61
And the rules change often.
62
If you don't know the rules of football, it can be hard to understand what's happening when you watch a game.
63
However, the objective of the game is simple.
64
You want to score more points than the other team.
65
You can score touchdowns, which are six points.
66
you can score field goals, which are three points, and you can score extra points, which are one point.
67
One team is on offense and one team is on defense.
68
The most important player is the quarterback.
69
He's the player who throws the ball.
70
And, of course, the championship game is called the Super Bowl.
71
This is a very popular event every year.
72
Okay, now I'm gonna ask you some questions about the video to see if you understood.
73
Write your answers in a comment down below.
74
