I won't be able to access the money quickly when I've decided what to do with it, will I?
3
Well, what sort of thing would you like to do?
4
Well, at first I thought about taking a trip around the world.
5
But if I went travelling, I'd lose a year of study, and I wouldn't have any money left over for anything else.
6
Very true.
7
If you were to spend a year travelling around the world, you'd probably need an awful lot more money than this.
8
Right.
9
So the other thing I wanted to do was buy a car.
10
Do you think that's a good idea?
11
It's not just the initial cost of the car you have to consider, you know.
12
If you own a car, you also have to pay for insurance and road tax every year.
13
Then there's the petrol...
14
Yes, Dad.
15
But I'm planning to get a part-time job as well.
16
And it would be great if I could drive to work instead of travelling on the bus.
17
Especially if I have to work late at night.
18
I still think you should think about investing some of your money for the future.
19
I'm scared that if I invest it, I might lose it all when the stock market goes down.
20
Well, it's best not to look at it like that.
21
You won't lose any money, provided that you think of it as a long-term investment.
22
Now, I know you want to buy a car, but as long as you get a second-hand one, you should still be able to invest some of the money as well.
23
That's what I would do if I were you.
24
But Dad, there's this fantastic new car that I've seen.
25
Recording 18 Hi Simon, how are you?
26
How is your new car going?
27
Oh, don't ask me, Anna.
28
It's a nightmare.
29
I should never have bought it.
30
Why?
31
What's wrong?
32
I thought you'd got one of those fancy new models.
33
I did, but that's part of the problem.
34
If I'd bought a second-hand car, I wouldn't have taken out this big bank loan I've got now.
35
Oh, so I suppose you've got big repayments to make.
36
Yes, and I can't sell the car until I've paid for it.
37
But it's not only that.
38
I had no idea running a car was going to be so expensive.
39
I wish I'd thought about the other costs before I bought it.
40
It probably wouldn't be so bad if the price of petrol hadn't almost doubled last month.
41
Don't remind me.
42
The petrol alone is costing me a fortune.
43
Lucky you've got that part-time job then.
44
That's just the thing.
45
Nearly all of my wages are going on the car.
46
If I'd waited a bit before buying the car, I'd have managed to save quite a bit by now.
47
I might even have gone on that college trip last week.
48
It sounded great.
49
Oh dear.
50
Can't you ask your dad to help you out?
51
No way.
52
When my grandad left me some money, my dad didn't want me to spend it on a car.
53
If only I'd listened to him, none of this would have happened.
54
I wish he wasn't always right.
55
Well, maybe you should value his opinions more.
56
You do seem to argue with him a lot.
57
If you got on better with him, you might have listened to his suggestions.
58
The worst thing is, Dad wanted me to buy some shares with the money, and now they've gone up by 30%.
59
I should have listened to him.
60
If I'd taken his advice, I'd own a small fortune now instead of a big debt.
61
Oh, Simon, you poor thing.
62
I wish I could help you, but I have even less money than you.
63
At least you have a car.
64
Oh, don't say that.
65
I wish I'd never bought the car.
66
If it weren't for the car, I'd have no money worries now.
