1
it's lovely to see you both
2
and especially at the same time i feel like uh really privileged to be able to chat to you both
3
because we've seen you on stage like what is it 24 25 times
4
you've shared a stage together i mean this is a real friendship true friendship here i guess that's true yeah
5
we are nothing
6
if not factual here at apple we love to do the data
7
we have the data at hand we have to get some statistics
8
i love it uh we'll talk about the video we'll talk
9
about the song we'll talk about all of it um
10
but let's just go back to the friendship and
11
and how you met i don't think i've ever asked either of you
12
that because i've never had a reason to
13
but now you're both here uh who can remember how you actually first met
14
i remember meeting you in the studio you were working yeah on i think sour yeah yeah
15
and it's been a long time coming i remember the first time
16
i was i remember the first time i'm exactly where i was
17
when i heard pig pony club the first time too
18
and i was like damn that song's amazing and the bit of
19
so long ago i mean i we've mentioned that for
20
so many years it's just uh it's just you know
21
it's awesome to have such a such a long lovely friendship same yeah
22
it's been really special to to see it come together on tour
23
and to see it be very real obviously
24
and also for you two
25
i'd imagine um for both of you to have ascended at
26
such a at such a quick pace through the quality of your music
27
and the hard work you've in
28
but to have each other at times i'm sure just to be able to
29
if nothing else just have something to laugh to laugh about it with do you know what i mean
30
or at least just put it in perspective with olivia you know i think that it's
31
so important to have friends who are in this position it's such a rare position to be in
32
and like to find people who can be grounded on that is very rare but i feel like
33
having olivia as a friend has been so grounding for me
34
and like to be able to do like art with her is
35
so cool i mean opening for her was so amazing
36
but like to have a song with her is just very cool circle
37
and feels wholesome and real well yeah it feels very not not even in a it's
38
so natural to me i agree i know i i feel
39
so lucky to have chapel in my life
40
i mean over the course the years we've known each other i think she's helped me
41
so much i think this is an insane industry to navigate
42
and like such a such a weird way to grow up
43
and so i think having her as as a resource
44
and like a support system and confidant has been um insanely helpful
45
so yeah and then we have some together
46
so it's like cherry on top as a fan of both of yours you know of your music
47
but also the way
48
that you both move um you know you stand on your business you know and i've spoken to you, Chappell, about that.
49
Olivia, I've spoken to you about that.
50
You know, I and millions of us have the highest respect for both of you.
51
And if you encourage each other and support each other to do that, then fucking hell yeah.
52
Hell yeah to that friendship.
53
Let's talk about expectations.
54
Let's talk about the song, which we all love in its original form.
55
So fun, Olivia, to be able to reimagine it, bring Chappell into it, do something, get two sides to it,
56
get two different stories and in two different takes, which obviously informs the video.
57
So, you know, the light bulb moment, when did you realize that you wanted to re -version the song and bring your friend into it?
58
When I wrote
59
Expectations initially, it was kind of like as a challenge to myself.
60
I wanted to write a mantra song.
61
I felt like lots of my songs were like, this is how I feel, blah, blah, blah.
62
But I wanted to be like, I want to sing this song every night.
63
And it's like, you know, it's like Kendrick Lamar, like, sit down, be humble.
64
It's like, it gets in your brain, you know what I mean?
65
Like, I feel like it's a mantra up.
66
And so when I made the song, honestly, I was really inspired by kind of Chapel and like the attitude and swagger that she had.
67
And so I think I probably played it for you while we were like in the middle of making the record too.
68
And it always like felt sort of inspired by you and your songwriting style.
69
So yeah, I was so stoked when she agreed to be on it.
70
It was a dream come true.
71
Chapel, how was it to contribute to that
72
and also to add new lyrics
73
and bring your own perspective man with the ghosting i can't believe we're back to getting ghosted chapel in this
74
well obviously i love um making things a little gay so oh it was fun to just be like
75
girl vibes um but this is obviously like my first feature i've ever
76
want this before so i it feels like the perfect perfect to me um
77
and it's i don't know i feel okay represent a generation of songwriters that like are just really thinking about their lyrics
78
And like, I felt like
79
with this song I was like wow it's so cool
80
that she is putting a pretty difficult concept within like a pop song
81
which is like my favorite pop songs ever
82
but um I was like it felt so natural to settle in
83
because I was like this is
84
so real like damn all my expectations of people it's
85
so valid um but i just for the the burst about being set up
86
and stuff i mean i was made up
87
but that's much more like a fantasy like i just want everybody to know nobody ghosted me
88
i want the facts out there who would dare ghost who would get you would dare
89
when i was dating boy is is when i got ghosted
90
but yeah i have like a vivid memory of being in this studio with you chapel
91
and like we're trying to write the second verse
92
and i was just like i was telling you all of like the crazy stuff
93
that boys have done to me
94
and you're like oh my god like you need to start dating girls
95
this is crazy it's wild it's wild out here it's just
96
it's just like cool to have like a queerness like i don't know i don't know
97
if everyone would be down to have like a fully queered verse on air
98
so like i think that
99
that is like says a lot about your support bar like she's a koreanist
100
but also beside girl park far but it's like
101
that just makes me it feels very feminist to me but
102
that is like so real you know olivia what you're doing
103
if i can just take a second
104
and say what you're doing in every step of how you're moving is
105
so inspiring like i i just like what you did with the festival
106
and i pointed this out to somebody the other day
107
they were like it's a lot of money i was like yes it's a lot of money
108
but but you're missing the actual number the number is a hundred percent not millions of dollars it's the percentage
109
that is the headline here um you know a lot of money
110
but it's but a percentage of an even bigger amount of money is a great statement, but 100 % is a powerful, really meaningful statement.
111
And even, and I was saying, like, even down to, and Chapel, I know because you played it, you respect this and love this,
112
no clashes on the stages, really just simple, really effective thinking from a people point of view and an experiential point of view.
113
And I haven't had a chance to talk to you about this because all this was happening after our conversation,
114
but man, you know, you come up a lot in how people should move these days.
115
You really do.
116
So I wanted to say
117
that oh thank you i mean it was one of the most meaningful experiences of my whole life and um
118
i'm not even just saying this because she's on the call
119
but having um chapel be there
120
and perform as you said for zero profits 100 percent of the profits going to charity was just um
121
it was really heartening
122
and it really made me feel really proud to be part of this artistic creative community
123
that like cares about the world and cares about their audience
124
and um yeah i uh i uh i'm really excited to keep going i'm like planning next years right now
125
and um yeah it's just it's just very meaningful to me yeah well
126
it's it's meaningful to everybody else as well that's really what i just want to make sure you understand
127
that it really is resonating with the artistic community with fans like people really respect
128
it um i started this conversation by by watching i was watching the video
129
that was my it was my version of a reaction video i'm not very good at
130
that stuff but um it's an amazing watch
131
and i mean we've got to talk about some of the cameos in here as well.
132
The most talked about cameo, of course, the biggest cameo in this video is Dan Nigro.
133
No, I'm joking.
134
Although it kind of is Dan Nigro.
135
It is kind of Dan Nigro because he should be in the studio.
136
But the fact you got him out on the camera is pretty amazing.
137
But we're going to start with David Byrne because obviously we have to start with the icon on the go.
138
Someone else you've shared a stage with.
139
And I feel who's inspired both of you in your own ways
140
i mean this is somebody who is just art first so
141
so cool to see him listening i'm having a good time
142
and showing that side that we all know he has how was it working with him in the vid
143
it was
144
so cool honestly i was in shock the whole time
145
i i kind of i asked him to do a cameo
146
and i was a little bit sheepish obviously
147
because you know it's i always feel shy asking people for favors
148
but he was so down he showed up the entire day he had a he had a character
149
that he had built down he like made this johnny johnson character there's
150
so many outtakes we have of him just like improv
151
and riffing and he was so into it
152
and i was like gosh david he maybe you know
153
he should be an actor too one of these days he's very multi -talented in a way don't
154
you think he kind of is like if i think about stop making sense
155
that movie you know he is
156
so walking the line between the reality of the music
157
and the inspiration of what he's trying to say
158
but also this character and this whole artistic space he exudes it's pure art it's but
159
but never from a sort of I never feel on the
160
outside of him like I don't fit in like I feel
161
like I still can be a fan of his He does it so brilliantly where it never feels like it's a costume.
162
It just sort of feels like an extension of him and kind of more of an absurd way.
163
But I love him so much and I love
164
Stop Making Sense so much.
165
And he's also just such a wonderful guy.
166
I've gotten a chance to like hang out with him and talk to him.
167
And he's just absolutely brilliant and very kind.
168
Speaking of extensions, and this is where I step out on the edge of a cliff and have to tread very carefully,
169
but I have good friends of mine who would know these sort of things that, Chapel, you may have dug into the wig factory,
170
into your prized wig cabinet for this particular video.
171
Is that true? is that true yes yeah i mean the line
172
that my friend sitting on the floor here said to me was another impeccable wig from chapel
173
i know i've been very into wigs and this video um
174
let me explore that path you know for you who's who's obviously you know doing the show
175
at the festival and you've been around in a really beautiful way
176
and you know you're showing up for the right things like you did the other night um
177
but you haven't been really active fair to say you're not on yet
178
and so going back on a video set and
179
and even with your friend
180
and being part of something fun how did it feel changing gears and being chapel ron in that regard again because
181
it's it's so clearly you in
182
that space you've got your superhero outfit on you know oh yeah for sure um
183
i felt i was like oh the pop song is like i felt really good
184
i mean i just love dressing up and like coffee and singing
185
but um i have been very much off
186
this last year like i haven't released a song since like the subway last year
187
so um it felt i was surprised how easily i just well
188
it settled into pop -down mode i was like oh yeah i'm gonna be in glint for five hours
189
and that's normal and i will be fine like like i i was fully you know
190
but it just was just appreciative
191
that like i get to i get to do this like and so i just make songs that are about
192
like we just get to bounce around on stage in hot little alchemy
193
and sing about love flying but it's like our vibe and i just like it just makes me so
194
it needs to be excited to get back into it
195
which like yeah you know we're we're getting
196
but it's like this was a good little fresh refresher to be like yes i actually am good at this
197
and i can do this don't forget
198
that i'm sorry i feel like daisy chain was your first performance right in like a year
199
or something like that like a real i did lately
200
and lala stopped in there i produce here but yeah
201
and i'm also like doing the super epic um stuck up there right so like
202
we've got to keep the lights on olivia do you know what i mean
203
i can take all the time off if i want
204
but we've got a little lollapalooza here
205
and a little lollapalooza there just keeps just keeps things turning
206
you know i just i just i remember watching you at daisy chain
207
and being like i can't she's not on tour right now
208
because this is most buttoned up incredible set i've ever seen
209
it looks like you just like yeah you've been doing this for months
210
and i was i was just really impressed i think the space
211
that you took to go in and figure out what you want to say next
212
and not just keep it moving i think whether you mentor
213
or not is a very inspiring decision um for artists that
214
that will others will come
215
and be in the situation
216
you're in where it's really fast like you olivia like you chapel
217
they will we're seeing them now i mean there are people going through
218
that and i think they have to know
219
that no is available right it is available no is your best friend
220
and smiling no is the best friend
221
and that's why like saying yes expectations always like yes let's get
222
it right like it feels fun this wasn't staring yeah like for me
223
and like i feel like people are gonna like it
224
and safe because the friendship too not for me to say
225
but you know the fact you can go out on set
226
and be with your buddy and it can be fun
227
and it's not just the chapel ron show is not i don't think it'll be lost on anybody either
228
that the support continues even through the most fun of experiences
229
you know wow it was nice to take a step back
230
and be like yes this is following the video like peace of hell
231
i wouldn't be here you get to go home exactly exactly you're the aunt
232
or the uncle in this situation where you get to give the baby back to olivia
233
and be like i'm out of here have a good time have a good time with this with this uh
234
this train you're on you know olivia
235
you seem really well boston on the 15th the tour looks like a total triumph
236
i can't wait to see it um chapel we're not we're not here yet for you
237
but we are when you are back
238
and you know whenever you're ready we're ready um
239
but that's that's the limit of it and uh this is a beautiful way um
240
you know to create something
241
that we're gonna have forever now this song the two of you this friendship on record
242
so once again olivia perfection and uh chapel is
243
so good to see you what a real treat
244
this has been i really enjoyed it the last 15 minutes thanks you two
245
oh thanks zane love you see you later love you guys take care bye guys
