How is the capital coping in swelting temperatures on the hottest June day on record?

Measures are in place across London to help keep people safe.

Extreme heat can be dangerous.

We're being really proactive and preventative, understanding the risks that's involved and we are really out there protecting the most vulnerable,

especially people who are sleeping rough.

And with this very hot and exceptionally humid weather expected to continue for the next few days,

the red weather warning for extreme heat has been extended until midnight tomorrow night.

When can we expect it to get any cooler?

Also ahead tonight, the Met Police announces plans to expand its use of drones to every London borough to help respond to 999 calls.

And not struggling but flourishing in the June sun.

It's great to have you with us on what has been the hottest June day on record

and the red warning for extreme heat that's currently in place for London has now been extended until midnight tomorrow.

It means there's a risk to life, even for people who are normally fit and healthy, and disruption to infrastructure.

London Ambulance say they've been responding to an increasing number of calls in what they describe as an exceptional heatwave

and have got 400 extra crews on the roads this week to help deal with the impact of the heat.

Here's Leila Hayes.

Daybreak over London and the temperatures already rising.

The extreme heat, a challenge for those experiencing homelessness.

But at this centre in Ilford, there is much needed shelter and hydration, something that can be life-saving.

Extreme heat can be dangerous.

Here in Redbridge, we're being really proactive and preventative,

understanding the risks that's involved and we are really out there protecting the most vulnerable especially people who are sleeping rough.

Thank God for a place like this.

Chakwabuka has been homeless for months and is grateful to get out of the heat.

Have a shower, dress properly and and have some cold children.

It's like a sanctuary.

It's like a sanctuary because it gives us hope.

The heat wave means at this hostel they're now putting out more beds to get people off the streets.

Normally these beds are put out in extreme cold weather

but they're now being used so that rough sleepers can come inside and get out of the heat emergency ambulances, the patient breathing.

At the London Ambulance Service, calls are up and they've put 400 extra crews on the road this week.

But there are concerns about those working in extreme temperatures.

What temperature is your office?

My office is 35 degrees.

These videos of a London bus driver struggling in the heat

both last summer and this year have gone viral and unions now want a maximum working temperature.

Our members are telling us that conditions on the buses are really uncomfortable.

Some operators might try and install fans to try and circulate air to try and give the illusion of cooling,

but that doesn't always work and they're not very robust machines.

Soaring temperatures mean many Londoners are finding it difficult to cope.

We've already had the hottest June day on record and there's more heat to come.

OK, let's get more now on the ongoing impact of this heatwave, which has caused significant disruption in the capital, as we've heard.

And we can join Asad, who's on the roof.

Hi there.

Yeah, the impact has been very widespread, Riz.

Exactly 50 years ago, when I was at primary school back in 1976, hundreds of schools closed because of the hot weather then.

Schools closed in 2022 as well, but hundreds of schools once again closed today like it did 50 years ago in 76,

and they will remain closed tomorrow.

Tourism has also been affected.

The very popular changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle,

that was cancelled this morning and tomorrow's captain's inspection at 3pm at Buckingham Palace,

that's not going ahead either because of the anticipated hot weather.

Tower Bridge, that closed to tourists.

And in south-east London, the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory were closed today and again will be closed tomorrow.

Now, the Royal Observatory sits within a Royal Park, Greenwich Park.

I was there this morning and it was noticeably quieter than usual this morning.

You had dog walkers out.

Obviously, dogs have to be walked.

You had the odd insane run.

I couldn't believe there were people jogging in the park but it was much much quieter than normal.

As far as travel is concerned we've had the figures in

and at 9am this morning it was quieter in central London than it was this time last week.

On the trains the railways have advised people to only make essential journeys if absolutely necessary.

Well, my colleague, Nicky Ford, came in from Harpenden to central London today and she spoke to passengers about their journey in.

Looking at the train board, there's a fair few services cancelled, including my usual train.

Where are you trying to get to?

I'm trying to get to Fraddingdon.

What's your reaction looking at that train board?

Going to be late for work.

Fewer trains

and the weather has also affected orders at the drinks kiosk

kiosk what people buying today you're usually busy aren't you yeah not too much people usually buy

in other days easily buy coffee and tea

but today yesterday uh they are always asking for water well i'm on a train it's a slow one

but it is a train into london and it's quite busy

people coming in from the airport as well as people on

their way to work too where are you traveling today emma

just into st tackers what why are you going to london

i have to be in the office still we have work events as well um

so despite the weather i still need to go to the office we've arrived at king's cross st pancras

so how was the journey for people it was okay actually the thames link's pretty good it's got aircon

so did you get affected by the cancellations uh not today

but i had to plan ahead just to make sure i

got the right one elsewhere king's cross was busy with people coming

and going in all directions i'm returning to boston okay

so you're You're travelling around London on the trains and tubes, aren't you?

Yeah, I was in the tube yesterday and today.

And how is it?

It was fine.

I think it was hot, but it wasn't as hot as, you know, Boston or New York City can get.

So it was bearable.

It's not what one expects for London, but it was OK.

It's been particularly uncomfortable for people living in hot homes as

residents in a 23-storey block in Canary Wharf have been telling us.

They've been forced to use the stairs after the lift broke down

and have been sharing their story with our reporter, Chris Legg.

Royal Captain Court in Tower Hamlets, 23 floors high.

All the lifts have been broken for nearly three days, leaving the residents to take the stairs in a heatwave.

Sahil lives on the 14th floor.

It's boiling just for you to climb up a couple of storeys and you start sweating and there's no ventilation, or proper ventilation in the stairwells.

It's a health and safety issue more than anything, and just the management should think of us as humans who are trying to live by in this heat.

New parents John and Sarah have to carry baby Sienna to the ninth floor.

So for the last two and a half days we've been scrambling up and down the stairs in the heat.

It's just been awful really.

It's so difficult obviously carrying the baby and the buggy on my own a lot.

The housing provider here is a company called Sanctuary, and they've told us they're sorry about the issue

that has put all three lifts in a 23-floor building out of action in a heat wave.

They say they're working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible,

but many of the residents here tell us they're yet to receive any explanation or apology.

Residents like new mum Kleanta and family who live on the 17th floor.

It's the hottest day in London for the year and we have had no support.

Sanctuary is well aware of what they are required to do

when there is an emergency in the building and when we don't have essential services like a lift.

They have not reached out.

We have not had people reach out if we are OK to provide supplies, if there's help needed up and down the building.

Those who live here need the temperatures to come down and the lifts to go up as soon as possible.

Now today we learned the Met Police plans to expand its

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley made the announcement at a speech today

where he called for police chiefs to have more freedom in using new technology.

He was also asked about the recent deal with a controversial US tech firm that was blocked by the mayor.

Serving as eyes in the skies above London, police drones are able to follow suspects on the ground and help officers track them down.

So we're currently up the street following the cyclist going past the shopping centre.

Last October, the Met showed us how it was piloting this technology in Islington.

Next year, they want to roll it out across London and share a network with other emergency services.

They're getting there within two minutes.

What that means is if you're an officer on the way to an incident, and officers are normally there maybe sort of eight, nine, ten minutes after the call, you're already getting a video feed.

You can ask for more resources or actually stand down because there's not something happening.

In a speech today at the Olympic Park, the Commissioner called for more freedom for police chiefs to use such technology.

Some campaign groups call for new legislation and restrictions every time a new capability emerges.

Whilst I know that comes from a legitimate place, it risks slowing progress to the point where policing cannot keep pace with the criminals or the threats that we face.

The Met recently won a High Court challenge over its expanding use of live facial recognition, which privacy and civil rights campaigners have raised concerns over.

Well, some will say policing by consent, particularly for a force trying to restore public trust over the last few years,

is absolutely why that scrutiny accountability is required. So trust is important.

Trust is, technology is actually generating more trust.

We're seeing that 80% plus of the public support technologies like drones and facial recognition.

The survey work that has been done for today shows that the public want us to adopt more technology.

They want us to be cutting edge because they can see how it will help them protect the communities.

What the commissioner had less to say on today was the £50 million tech deal recently blocked by the mayor's office.

So the Met wanted to do a deal with the US firm Palantir.

Palantir, it's been piloting some of its AI technology to do things like speed up investigations.

The mayor blocked that deal, saying he wasn't satisfied it was value for money.

The commissioner warned as a result he may have to make cuts to frontline services.

Regardless of a different opinion on that, we're both committed to doing the best policing possible in London and using technology to do that.

The first in early June saw temperatures reach around 33 degrees.

Well, here today, we're expecting temperatures of around 36 degrees.

But what does that mean for the vines?

When you have vines, what they do is they retain energy from previous years.

So last year was a really, really good year.

So that energy will go into the production of grapes for this year, which means you're more likely to get the same level of quality,

but a higher yield.

Is the increase in heat allowing Britain to compete with the more established wine markets?

Very much so.

The French have been buying land in England, in Kent, I believe, to plant and make their champagne style, make their sparkling wines.

So while not everyone will be happy with this heat, it is helping British vineyards have their moment in the sun.

So for us here in London, the temperature tomorrow is unlikely to be as hot as it is today.

So temperatures out along the Essex coast, high 20s, central London at around 32.

It will be further south and west where those warmer temperatures are at around 35 Celsius.

Now, that amber warning in place, that covers the whole of the region.

So it is still going to be extremely hot.

In fact, Friday is going to be hotter than tomorrow.

We've got the air coming from the south again, or the breeze coming from the south.

So temperatures likely to get back up into the mid-30s, 34 or 35 Celsius.
