2
and definitely could be for lots of students in the future.
3
She's definitely been through some rough patches in her language acquisition but she's bowled through and her story is truly inspirational.
4
So without further ado, Maria,
5
do you mind if I ask you some questions?
6
Yes, please.
7
Okay.
8
How old were you when you started at our academy?
9
I started in sixth grade,
10
so I was 11 years old and now I'm 21.
11
Okay, and why did your parents put your name down for English lessons originally?
12
That's curious because I didn't know until now.
13
So I asked them and they told me that they signed me up
14
because they thought that I have to learn English for my future.
15
And yes, they were right.
16
And how did you perform in English exams at primary school?
17
In primary school I was very bad in my English.
18
I used to fail on all my exams practically.
19
Did you ever doubt your language learning capabilities?
20
Yes, sometimes I used to think
21
that I was not good enough to learn in English because I was watching my friends to getting their certificates
22
and maybe I was doing something wrong.
23
How did this make you feel?
24
That made me feel a little bit insecure because,
25
as you said, they were growing up with me.
26
So, watching them getting their certificates and not me got me wondering if I was doing something wrong.
27
and yeah, a little bit.
28
What made you keep going?
29
Actually, it was two things.
30
The first one was my parents, obviously.
31
They keep motivating me, so to keep going,
32
to keep fighting for my certificate and the second one was the fear
33
because I was so afraid to lose what I've learned all these years in English and that become my strength.
34
And has learning English helped you with any other areas in your life?
35
Yes at work
36
and also traveling because I am the one of my group of friends
37
that can speak English so I usually help them with all that.
38
So now you're doing so well you have your B2 certificate
39
and you're working with you on a certificate at the moment
40
what advice would you give to those learners who find English
41
difficult you I know those learners who sometimes fail exams in English at high school and they hear people say,
42
oh, they're not so English is not for them.
43
What advice would you give to those learners?
44
That learning English is not a competition.
45
It is about self-learning.
46
I know it takes a lot of time,
47
but actually it's very worth it so
48
maybe you see people that is very good at English
49
and you know but I've been there so I know what it is
50
but I know that it's a delight at the end of the tunnel so
51
yeah you should go for it go back
52
and be patient yes you definitely encourage them not to give up
53
and there's a time for everyone and eventually they stick to it okay thank you very much thank you

Practice Tips

For effective English speaking practice, especially when applying the shadowing technique, start by selecting passages from the video transcript to focus on. Given the emotional tone and relatable content, repeat after each sentence to closely mimic the speaker's pace and inflection. Here are some tips to maximize your practice:

  • Use a shadowing app to slow down or speed up the audio, ensuring you can keep pace without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Focus on mimicking not just the words but also the emotional tone, as this can enhance your speaking fluency and expressiveness.
  • Start with shorter sections of the transcript to build confidence, gradually increasing to longer passages as you become more comfortable.
  • Record your shadow speech and listen for areas where you can improve pronunciation or emotional delivery.
  • Engage with a language partner through a shadowing site or community group to practice these phrases in real conversation.

Remember, learning English takes time and perseverance; embrace the journey and enjoy the progress you make along the way!
