signs of distress, and they may point to their throat or grasp their neck.
5
If you think someone is choking, ask, are you choking?
6
If they can talk, cough or breathe, they might clear it on their own.
7
If they can't do any of those, help them immediately.
8
Slap it out.
9
If coughing fails to work, you need to give five sharp back blows.
10
To do this, help them to lean forwards, supporting their upper body with one hand.
11
With the heel of your other hand, give them five sharp back blows between their shoulder blades.
12
After each back blow, check to see if there's anything in their mouth.
13
Squeeze it out.
14
If back blows fail to clear the obstruction, give five abdominal thrusts.
15
To do this, stand behind them and put your arms around their waist.
16
Place one hand in a clenched fist between their belly button and the bottom of their chest.
17
With your other hand, grasp your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards up to five times.
18
Check their mouth again each time.
19
If the blockage has not cleared, call 999 or 112 for emergency help straight away.
20
Repeat five back blows and five abdominal thrusts until help arrives, rechecking their mouth each time.
21
If they become unresponsive at any point, prepare to start CPR.
22
If someone is choking, performing first aid could help save their life.
23

24
Remember to stay calm and continue to provide support until help arrives.
