Today I'm with Robin Marshall,
2
who has just written a book about travelling in Argentina.
3
Robin, tell us about yourself.
4
Well, I've travelled to South America a lot for my work,
5
and I know Argentina well now.
6
So well that I could be a tour guide if I wanted.
7
I speak fluent Spanish, so I don't need anyone to translate for me.
8
My job involves travelling around selling products for my company.
9
I meet a lot of people doing that,
10
and I wanted to share those experiences with others,
11
so I decided to try writing.
12
So, tell us about your last visit to Argentina.
13
What was the weather like?
14
Well, it was winter there,
15
so mornings were cold, but I'd expected that.
16
Every day they said on the radio that it would be sunny later,
17
and sure enough it was.
18
I wanted to go sightseeing,
19
and the weather was perfect for that.
20
And where did you go when you went sightseeing?
21
Well, I went to a wonderful market that sold everything from modern art to old records of traditional music which I collect.
22
I came home with a beautiful painting of the area.
23
I also saw a wonderful antique chair,
24
but unfortunately it was too big to bring back.
25
Now, Argentina is famous for its dancing.
26
Did you see any performances during your trip?
27
I did, yes.
28
It reminded me of when I used to attend dance classes.
29
I enjoyed them, although I was never very good.
30
I'm sure my teacher was pleased when I said I wasn't going to continue.
31
But these dancers made it look so easy that at that moment I felt like joining in and dancing with them.
32
Sounds wonderful.
33
And what else did you do?
34
Well, I went to a small village on the coast.
35
I took the bus there and got a room in a small hotel.
36
The hotel owner was very friendly.
37
He took me down the river in his boat.
38
It was very beautiful.
39
You could see the forest in the distance.
40
Do you have a favourite place in Argentina?
41
Definitely.
42
It's a mountain near Buenos Aires.
43
It's famous for its spectacular scenery.
44
But when I went there it was very misty and the sun was just rising.
45
You couldn't see much.
46
There were no birds or animals about.
47
It was totally quiet and I loved that.
48
I shall go back one day.
49
We look forward to reading your book.
50
Thank you, Robin.

Listening and shadowing Robin's speech can lead to a better understanding of conversational norms, helping learners not only to speak but also to interact effectively in various situations.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, several essential grammatical structures and phrases appear that are beneficial for English learners to practice:

  • Past Simple Tense: Robin often recounts his past experiences, as in “I went to a wonderful market.” This structure is crucial for sharing stories and discussing past events.
  • Conditional Sentences: Phrases like “if I wanted” highlight how conditions can influence decisions. Learners can use this structure to express hypothetical situations in their daily conversations.
  • Descriptive Language: Words such as “beautiful” and “spectacular” are used to describe places and experiences. Enriching one’s vocabulary with adjectives can help in painting vivid images while speaking.
  • Comparative and Superlative Forms: Robin uses comparisons to express preferences, such as “it was very misty,” which can help learners articulate their likes and dislikes more effectively.

Common Pronunciation Traps

While practicing with Robin's interview, learners might encounter tricky words or accents that are common in English, especially with contextual vocabulary:

  • “Argentina”: The pronunciation of the letter 'g' can be challenging; focusing on sounding it as a soft 'g' is essential.
  • “Fluent”: This word can be difficult for some learners, particularly with the 'fl' and 'nt' sounds. Practicing these consonant clusters will aid clarity in speech.
  • “Spectacular”: The rhythm and stress patterns in this word may confuse learners. Emphasizing the second syllable can enhance pronunciation.

By familiarizing themselves with these structures and pronunciation tips during the video, learners can seamlessly integrate these elements into their own speaking practice, effectively utilizing shadowspeak techniques to improve their language skills. Make sure to incorporate these learnings as you learn English with YouTube and engage in your own English speaking practice.
