Man's Search for Meaning is a book all about the lessons
2
that Viktor Frankl learnt from being a prisoner in the concentration camps.
3
It's a really powerful book and I took a lot of lessons from it, and I'm going to show you the top 5.
4
Number 1.
5
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing, the last of the human freedoms, to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.
6
Remember that in any situation, you can choose how to react.
7
You are not experiencing the world, you're experiencing your thoughts about the world.
8
Imagine there's a final filter between the real you and the outside world, and that is your thoughts.
9
You can control that final filter.
10
Eleanor Roosevelt said, no one can make you feel inferior without your permission.
11
Imagine two healthy men are in a car accident.
12
Both are paralysed and lose the ability to walk.
13
The first man feels extremely hard done by and becomes really depressed
14
and says how he wishes he had been killed in the accident and feels miserable.
15
The second man, in the exact same situation, decides to do the opposite.
16
He chooses to feel gratitude for the fact that he survived.
17
He feels like he was wasting his life before and so goes off and achieves great things despite his disabilities.
18
He feels liberated and doesn't fear the things he used to.
19
He says how in some ways he's grateful for the accident
20
and it has woken him up and he's seizing life and feels much happier than he used to.
21
I highly recommend practicing meditation each day even
22
if only for a few minutes
23
because it allows you to separate yourself from your thoughts and have an objective view on situations, which makes it feel like you're watching them happen to someone else.
24
This allows you to react much more logically and not feel as emotionally attached to bad situations.
25
The more you meditate, the easier it will become.
26
Marcus Aurelius said, if you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it, and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
27
So choose your own way to react.
28
Lesson 2.
29
You aren't searching for a life of peace, you are searching for a life with a purposeful struggle.
30
When most people imagine their dream life is something like sitting on a beach with a nice drink, relaxing with nobody telling them what to do.
31
They have enough money to do whatever they want and people think this will make them extremely happy.
32
As they have never lived this life, I can't say for certain, but I believe what would happen is
33
that people would enjoy it for some time and then would feel extremely bored and lost.
34
You see this happen quite often with celebrities, sometimes turning to drugs to get some excitement back in their lives.
35
Obviously this has terrible consequences.
36
So what should they do instead?
37
Viktor Frankl teaches that people really want to work towards something in their life that has a real purpose.
38
You want a purposeful struggle.
39
Something to work towards that isn't instantly completed.
40
Something that you have to chip away at each day.
41
For me it's this YouTube channel.
42
Most days I just chip away, write small parts of scripts for videos and it makes me feel great
43
because each day I'm working towards helping people improve their lives by explaining various concepts.
44
This is my purposeful struggle and it's always easy
45
but that's what makes it so satisfying when a new video is completed
46
because i know all the effort
47
that goes into it what purposeful struggle should you work towards it's a difficult question to answer
48
and obviously different for everyone
49
but the advice i'd give is to think of something greater than yourself
50
and then just try lots and lots of things
51
and keep spending your time searching and learning don't stay in a job
52
that you hate lesson three almost all of what you fear
53
is not important victor frankl explains what happened to the prisoners after they were released from the concentration camps.
54
There were negatives but the biggest positive was the liberation the prisoners felt.
55
They were liberated from any fears they used to have.
56
In comparison to the concentration camps, their previous worries were insignificantly small so they felt empowered to do whatever they wanted with their lives.
57
I had depression before and I felt terrible and often couldn't get out of bed because I couldn't imagine a positive future.
58
Before I had depression, I used to worry about what other people thought about me
59
and didn't ever properly try and work towards anything huge due to fear of failure.
60
I'd always wanted to make a YouTube channel but I never did
61
because I didn't have the drive and I was worried what other people would think.
62
After getting through depression suddenly all of that didn't matter anymore.
63
Having depression allowed me to gain real perspective and to see how insignificant my previous worries were.
64
I was just happy to be feeling better and I couldn't wait to start work on a YouTube channel.
65
So I fully committed to creating this channel.
66
I'm so glad that I have.
67
I absolutely love what I do.
68
Here's a great quote from the book that will guide you through life.
69
Live as if you're living for the second time, and the first time you lived as wrongly as you are now.
70
So remember, almost all of what you fear is not important.
71
Lesson four, have gratitude for very small moments and simple things.
72
People always want more.
73
Have gratitude for what you have now, so that when you do have more, you'll have gratitude for that and actually enjoy it.
74
Otherwise, you're always chasing something in the future, and the grass will always be greener on the other side.
75
Seize any moment that life gives you to smile.
76
Properly stop and appreciate it fully.
77
One of the simplest ways to instantly have more happiness in your life is to practice mindfulness
78
and be completely mindful in happy moments.
79
Mindfulness is simply living in the present and practising getting out of your head and into your body, not thinking about the past or the future, just focus on the present.
80
One of my favourite quotes of all time comes from the film Kung Fu Panda, where Master Ugoi says to Poe, You are too concerned with what was and what will be.
81
There is a saying, Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.
82
That is why it is called the present.
83
In the book, Viktor Frankl explains that one night, one of the men rushed into the cabin and told them all to come quickly and see the most incredible sunset.
84
Frankl said it was a fantastic sunset
85
and the sunsets were one of the few things the guards couldn't stop them from enjoying.
86
If you're ever overwhelmed just look at a sunset and remember
87
that it's the exact same sun that Frankl looked at and enjoyed so much.
88
When I do this it instantly makes me appreciate my freedom
89
and everything that I do have and suddenly any worry shrinks to its proper size.
90
One of the simplest ways I've found to feel happier in my life is
91
that each night I think of three things during the day that I really enjoyed.
92
Sometimes I can have it in my head
93
that it's been a bad day but then
94
when I think about those three things I realise actually this has been a really great day.
95
I'd really recommend just trying it.
96
Also appreciate any moment of laughter.
97
Viktor Frankl had a friend in the camps
98
and the two of them would try each day to tell the other something funny that would make them laugh.
99
Patch Adams is one of my favourite films of all time.
100
Here's a quote from it about the power of laughter.
101
Remember laughing?
102
Laughter enhances the blood flow to the body's extremities and improves cardiovascular function.
103
Laughter releases endorphins and other natural mood -elevating pain -killing chemicals, improves the transfer of oxygen and nutrients to internal organs.
104
Laughter boosts the immune system and helps the body fight off disease, cancer cells, as well as virus, bacterial and other infections.
105
Being happy is the best cure of all diseases.
106
So have gratitude for very small moments and simple things and laugh as often as possible.
107
Lesson 5.
108
He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how.
109
Viktor Frankl got through the terrible time in the concentration camp
110
because he knew he would take what he was learning from the situation and write a book.
111
He knew that that book would really help others.
112
He chose to focus on how he was going to help other people
113
because of the situation he was in and he didn't focus on the terrible things that were happening around him.
114
He thought of something bigger than himself.
115
The way over prisoners got through the camp was to be
116
extremely generous giving away some of their food to other prisoners
117
this would give them a huge sense of purpose these prisoners
118
gave themselves a real purpose a reason to keep going they had a big why
119
because they were staying positive for other prisoners
120
when you're working towards something you'll find it much easier to keep going
121
if your main aim is something bigger than yourself the aim
122
of this youtube channel is to improve the lives of millions of people around the world
123
because this aim is so great
124
and much bigger than me it keeps me going in times when i'm finding the work difficult.
125
So, to summarise, lesson one, everything can be taken from a man but one thing, the last of the human freedoms,
126
to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.
127
Lesson two, you aren't searching for a life of peace, you're searching for a life of a purposeful struggle.
128
Lesson three, almost all of what you fear is not important.
129
Lesson four, have gratitude for very small moments and simple things and laugh as often as possible.
130
And lesson five, he who has a why to live can bear with almost any how.
