Hi there!
2
Today we're practicing English while visiting a craft store.
3
I was looking for some green paper for a small photo book I was making, but I ended up finding lots of other interesting craft supplies along the way.
4
You can speak along with me for shadowing practice or just relax and listen along.

6
Okay, let's go for a walk.
7
I was heading to a craft store because I needed to find something for a craft project I was working on.
8
I was making a small photo book and I needed some nice thick textured green paper for the cover.
9
Do you have any crafts you like to do?
10
I didn't realize it at first, but the first thing they were selling inside the store was bedding and bed linen.
11
They had matching sets of covers for your pillows, sheets and your doona cover.
12
A doona is what Australians call a duvet or a quilt.
13
It's the thick, soft blanket you put on your bed to keep warm.
14
They did sell a lot of fabric at this store, so I suppose it made sense to sell bed linen too.
15
They had lots of crazy patterns.
16
I'd never seen sheets like this before.
17
The sheets had a printed photo of two Highland cows on them.
18
You must really love Highland cows if you had these on your bed.
19
There were also sheets with a galaxy print on them.
20
A galaxy is a huge group of stars and planets in outer space.
21
If I wanted to have stars on my bed sheets, I think I'd prefer this type of celestial pattern.
22
Celestial means relating to the sky, space, stars or planets
23
So a celestial pattern might have stars
24
or moons on it They had sets of sheets in all
25
different colours They also had different textures too This one had strands coming off it
26
And this one had a waffle texture What kind of texture would you prefer?
27
There were some other homewares here too There were small blue glass bottles and short blue glass cups.
28
There were photo frames too.
29
A photo frame holds and displays a picture.
30
Some of these had a thick frame around where the photo went.
31
Down this aisle there were towels.
32
I didn't expect the store to have towels either but I suppose they were made from fabric too.
33
A towel is a piece of fabric that you use to dry yourself or something after it gets wet.
34
I liked this color blue.
35
Finally, I'd found the craft supplies.
36
Craft supplies are the materials and tools you need to make something.
37
So paper, glue, scissors, paint, thread and beads are all craft supplies.
38
I looked around to see if I could find the paper I needed.
39
In this aisle, there were lots of polystyrene shapes.
40
Polystyrene is a very light material that can be made into different shapes.
41
It's often used for craft projects because it's easy to cut, paint and decorate.
42
These balls were quite small but you could also get larger ones if that's what you needed.
43
On the bottom shelf there were mannequin heads and tall cones.
44
You might use a mannequin head to store or display a wig.
45
Along the back wall there were so many balls of yarn.
46
They were arranged by colour.
47
A ball of yarn is a long thin strand of material that's been wound into a ball.
48
People usually use yarn for knitting or crochet.
49
There seem to be lots of different thicknesses and textures.
50
Sometimes you can use yarn made from sheep's wool or lamb's wool, and sometimes you can use silk.
51
These balls were made of really thin strands of cotton yarn.
52
They were much thinner than the other balls.
53
These balls had sequins along the yarn, so when you knitted your project together, the sequins would pop out in the finished piece.
54
These balls had a fuzzy kind of texture and were made from polyester.
55
There were so many different kinds of yarn.
56
Do you know how to knit?
57
It was a hobby I'd always wanted to try and learn.
58
I think I might try it out next winter.
59
There was a sample of how the yarn knitted into stitches.
60
It was an example of what the stitches would look like once they'd been knitted.
61
The colours in the yarn were speckled through the knitting.
62
Speckles means covered with lots of small spots or marks of different colours.
63
Around the corner was where they sold knitting needles.
64
These green ones were very thick and these red ones were much thinner.
65
They also sold crochet hooks.
66
Crochet is similar to knitting
67
but instead of using two knitting needles you normally use one crochet hook to make loops and stitches.
68
Near the knitting needles they sold thread for embroidery.
69
Embroidery is when you decorate fabric by sewing patterns or pictures into it with thread.
70
The embroidery thread was thin and colorful and it came in lots of different shades.
71
I actually needed some thread for the book I was making
72
but I needed to match the colour to the paper I found.
73
I wanted dark green paper.
74
This green was nice, but it might have been too vibrant.
75
I thought I wanted a darker green, like this.
76
Above the thread were pairs of scissors.
77
There were some small ones for cutting thread, and some larger ones that looked like they could cut through fabric.
78
They also sold packets of needles here to sew with.
79
Sewing is joining pieces of fabric together using a needle and thread.
80
The needles were sharp and pointy.
81
These needles were a bit thicker and longer.
82
They might have been better for sewing through thicker fabric.
83
On the other side of this aisle were wooden boxes.
84
They had a little latch so they could close securely.
85
There were also tiny signs with little chalkboards you could write on.
86
You might have wanted to paint or decorate the wood around it.
87
They also had different shapes cut out of wood.
88
They had stars and they also had pegs that you could use to clip things together.
89
At the bottom of the shelf there were paddle pop sticks.
90
These were just small wooden sticks but in Australia they're known as paddle pop sticks
91
because of an ice cream called a paddle pop.
92
A paddle pop ice cream comes on this kind of stick.
93
You could use the sticks to make things like little houses, picture frames or other small craft projects.
94
Around the corner and down the next aisle there were beads.
95
These beads were hanging on strings.
96
There were lots of little colourful beads in one long string.
97
There were rolls of elastic string to thread the beads onto.
98
To thread something onto something means to put it through a hole or an opening, usually one at a time.
99
You could also get wire to thread them onto, or a thicker string made from leather.
100
As well as beads, they had other little charms and hooks for making things with.
101
These were little carabiners shaped like hearts.
102
A carabiner is a small clip that you can use to attach one thing to another.
103
You could use them to attach your keychain to something or to hook it onto your bag.
104
There were wooden beads shaped like bear faces and other wooden shapes like elephants.
105
There were also small shells you could use as beads.
106
If you wanted to make jewellery, you could find plain packs of earrings and make your own designs on top of them.
107
These were stud earrings but you could also get small hoops and thread beads onto them.
108
There were also chains for necklaces.
109
Do you prefer gold or silver jewellery?
110
After that I found bags of pom poms.
111
Pom poms are small fuzzy round balls.
112
They remind me of being in primary school and decorating crazy hats and other school projects.
113
There were shelves of felt too.
114
Felt is a soft, thick material made by pressing the fibres together.
115
It doesn't have the same woven texture as normal fabric.
116
On your felt project, you might stick some googly eyes onto it.
117
You could get one big googly eye or a bag of small googly eyes.
118
I thought that anything could look funny with some googly eyes on it.
119
Ok, I'd been getting a bit distracted thinking about all of the craft projects I could make, but I'd finally found the aisle with the coloured paper.
120
There were stands full of different colours and patterns of sheets of paper.
121
I thought I only needed one sheet of paper, maybe two sheets at most.
122
This sheet of paper had a nice texture and had a striped pattern on it.
123
It was nice, but it wasn't what I was looking for.
124
These were larger sheets of paper, they were A3 size.
125
I didn't need a sheet that big.
126
These were sheets of textured cardboard.
127
I didn't need something that thick.
128
I also didn't want something that was reflective.
129
Reflective means that a surface sends light back and you can see light or your own image in it.
130
This metallic paper was also a bit reflective.
131
Metallic means that it looks like metal.
132
It often has a shiny surface.
133
I'd found something close to what I needed.
134
I liked the texture of this paper a lot and it was the right thickness, but it was the wrong colour.
135
I needed a dark green colour and this was light blue.
136
Unfortunately, I didn't think they had the kind of paper that I was looking for.
137
I kept looking around the store just in case I found something somewhere unexpected.
138
There were heaps of large canvases against this wall to paint on.
139
They also had lots of tubes of paint.
140
What colour paint would you choose to paint with.
141
They had lots of red paints.
142
Each one was a slightly different shade.
143
A shade is a particular version of a colour.
144
For example, you can have a light shade of red or a dark shade of red.
145
There were packets of paintbrushes with thin pointy bristles and ones with thick round bristles.
146
The bristles are the small hairs that make up the ends of a paintbrush.
147
There were also paint palettes to put your paint on.
148
Next was the section with the party supplies.
149
Party supplies are things you might need for a party like decorations.
150
I thought I might find something here.
151
There were rolls of ribbon to wrap gifts with and bows to put on top.
152
They had candles for birthday cakes.
153
They did have disposable green paper plates but I didn't think that kind of paper would work for me.
154
Disposable means something that you use once or only a few times and then you throw it away.
155
Then I was in the aisle that sold cake making items.
156
There were different colours of food dye to make coloured icing on a cake
157
and there were moulds in the shape of hearts.
158
There was a wall full of sprinkles too.
159
Sprinkles are tiny pieces of coloured sugar that you put on cakes to decorate them.
160
There were more disposable plates and cutlery for parties down the next aisle.
161
They had green knives and green spoons, but nothing close to the green paper that I wanted, who was tougher than I thought.
162
Then I was in the aisle for balloons.
163
These balloons were all deflated, which meant that they didn't have any air in them yet.
164
You could pump them up yourself using a small hand pump.
165
You could also blow them up with your mouth, although that could take you a while if you had a lot of balloons.
166
They could also fill them up with helium at this counter.
167
Helium is a gas that makes balloons float.
168
Then I was in the aisle where they sold sewing machines.
169
A sewing machine is a machine that uses a needle and a thread to join pieces of fabric together.
170
What would you like to make if you had a sewing machine?
171
Around the corner, there was a whole wall of buttons.
172
These were sewing buttons you could use to fasten clothes or decorate your sewing project.
173
There were lots of different sizes, shapes, and colors.
174
When was the last time you had to sew a button back onto your clothes?
175
They also had a whole wall of cotton threads that you could sew with.
176
There were lots of different colours so you could choose a thread that matched your fabric.
177
There were also some zippers you might want to use in your sewing project.
178
These had already been zipped up.
179
They were ready to be unzipped.
180
There were some last little sewing tools like pins and a measuring tape too.
181
Then I was in the fabric section.
182
I didn't think I was going to find my paper here but I thought I'd have a look at the fabrics anyway.
183
These rolls of fabric were patterned.
184
I liked these watermelons.
185
They had plain coloured fabrics rolled up too.
186
You could choose the fabric you liked and cut it to the length that you needed.
187
Someone had found some green fabric for their project
188
and the shop assistant had unrolled it
189
and was about to cut it to the right length for them to take home and sew.
190
Have you ever made something from fabric?
191
What would you make if you could sew and you could choose any fabric in this store?
192
There was a mannequin by the fabrics too.
193
A mannequin is a model shaped like a person
194
that you can use to display clothes or use to work on sewing projects.
195
This type of mannequin could be adjusted, so you could change its size to fit the person you were making clothes for.
196
I hadn't had any luck finding my green paper today, but I had a lot of ideas for other things I'd like to make.
197
I made my way to the exit through an aisle of fake flowers.
198
The flowers were artificial.
199
They were made from plastic, but they were designed to look like real flowers.
200
Thanks for coming to the craft store with me today.
