This is one of my best friends, Steven.

He is the happiest person I know.
23
Steven is 44 years old and has autism.
24
Let me start by explaining how we became special friends.
25
When my mom was just 13 years old,
26
she was in the high school cafeteria about to have lunch with her friends.
27
Then she passed a table of kids with special needs.
28
Steven was a boy at that table.
29
He shouted out, hey, what's your name?
30
Come sit with me.
31
My mom sat down and in that moment, a special friendship began.
32
Steven asked my mom three questions.
33
He wanted to know what she was having for lunch,
34
her phone number, and if they could be friends for 40 years.
35
As my mom gave him her phone number and said yes,
36
he clapped with excitement and said,
37
I will call you every day.
38
Ever since that day, in 1988,
39
he has kept his promise and called our house every single day.
40
When I was born, Stephen was a special part of our family,
41
and I've grown up calling him Uncle Stephen.
42
Stephen is included in family dinners,
43
he comes to my soccer games,
44
he loves watching movies with us,
45
and every couple of weeks, he has a sleepover.
46
Stephen has had autism his whole life.
47
Autism Spectrum Disorder refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills,
48
repetitive behaviors, speech, and non-verbal communications,
49
as well as by unique strengths and differences.
50
My friend Stephen is not able to drive a car,
51
but he is able to memorize every phone number he has ever heard.
52
There is no cure for autism,
53
but I think Stephen is perfect the way he is.
54
One of my favorite memories with Stephen is whenever a fire truck passes us.
55
He shouts out when I grow up,
56
I want to be a fire truck.
57
That always makes me smile.
58
He likes the idea of being a fireman,
59
but he loves the idea of being a fire truck.
60
Another thing that always makes me laugh is how much he likes to eat.
61
Have you ever met someone who can eat a steak,
62
eight slices of pizza, french fries,
63
apple pie, ice cream, and they are still starving?
64
Well, Stephen eats all that almost every time we see him.
65
Finally, one of my favorite memories with Stephen is when we play hide-and-seek.
66
He always hides in the closets.
67
I love playing hide-and-seek with Stephen.
68
It always makes me smile.
69
But not just me.
70
Not just me, he makes everyone smile.
71
I don't think we need a cure for autism,
72
just like we don't need a cure for freckles.
73
Autism is not a disease,
74
just like brown hair isn't a disease.
75
You don't need to fix something that isn't broken.
76
I look up to my Uncle Stephen,
77
as he is the happiest person I know.
78
Stephen doesn't try to be like anyone else.
79
He is exactly who he was meant to be.
80
Imagine a world where we all live like Stephen.
81
Find out what makes you different.
82
Don't be afraid to stand out.

Wake up, jump out of bed,
