1
I've been using the Osmo Pocket 4P for the past 100 days, and it's just become my go -to camera.
2
Now, a lot of you have watched my 30 -day review, and you've got questions, and you've been leaving them in the comments,
3
and I've been trying to answer them, but I think the best thing to do is just make another review video after 100 days,
4
and kind of just answer questions that you guys have left for me as I go.
5
And please let me know if you're on the fence about picking up the 4P, or if you've already picked one up,
6
and you're just getting to know it.
7
I'm always interested in knowing where people are on their journey.
8
Okay, so over the past 100 days, I've filmed cinematic B -roll, talking heads, vlogs, tracking shots, slow motion shots, product shots.
9
I've done a lot of photography.
10
I've done some wildlife shooting and I've shot in all different types of lighting environments.
11
Backlit scenes, harsh sunlight, golden hour, low light, indoor studio lighting, and some really dark nighttime spots also.
12
And I like to push this camera to its limit to see where it starts to break apart.
13
But I've used the one times camera, the three times.
14
I've gone all the way up to 12 times zoom.
15
And then also to help me get a baseline of how this camera performs, I versed it against the Osmo Pocket 3,
16
the Osmo Pocket 4, the iPhone 17
17
Pro, the iPhone 18
18
Pro, the Insta360 Luna Ultra, the Osmo Action 6, the Sony ZVE -10
19
Mark II, the Sony A6700, and the GoPro Mission 1 Pro.
20
And I'm trying to figure out which one I should do next.
21
Please let me know.
22
But this isn't like a first impression type of video.
23
This is something where I've actually used this almost every single day since I've owned it.
24
And with all that being said, there's still some stuff that frustrate me.
25
By the way, I bought this camera with my own money.
26
DJI is not sponsoring this video this is my own opinions also none of the shots
27
that you're going to see in this video were created using ai
28
they were all used with the osmo pocket 4p and also
29
while i'm at it
30
if you plan on picking this camera up i left free project files shots
31
that i got with this camera like dlog2 4k 120 just all the different shots
32
that i got in a project file
33
that you can download as you follow along and one more thing
34
if you do pick up the 4p
35
or you plan on picking up the 4p i made a full course
36
that takes you from setting it up from scratch to going out
37
and getting amazing cinematic shots with it along with different color luts to help you go out
38
and get the most out of this camera.
39
I'll leave links to those products in the description.
40
And I really don't want to paywall between you and learning your camera.
41
So if you're on a really tight budget, go ahead and email me and I'll send you out a pretty good discount code for the course.
42
All right, so that's what we're going to be covering 100 days with the 4P today on the Film Alliance.
43
All right, so using this camera almost every single day for the past 100 days,
44
every single time I pull up the footage on my computer, I'm very impressed.
45
It's rare that I look at shots from this camera and I feel let down.
46
I always feel let down when I look at something
47
that comes from like my smartphone and I'm using like the native camera.
48
I'll come home and be like, wow, that's pretty noisier.
49
The mid -tones are lifted.
50
But with this camera, it really does feel like a mirrorless camera shot.
51
The image quality is great.
52
It's got great stabilization.
53
I love it slow motion, being able to shoot in 4K up to 240 frames per second.
54
I definitely like this camera now more than I did when I made that first review.
55
But living with it every day and trying to shoot with it in real world situation has exposed some weak spots.
56
And I wanna talk about some of that stuff today in this video.
57
There's still no proper hard case.
58
The screen feels tiny and you could easily just drop this thing and break the gimbal head or the screen.
59
It's not like I can flip the screen around so I can protect the glass.
60
D -Log 2 is great, but it doesn't work on the three times camera.
61
And skin tones on the one times camera don't look too good.
62
That's why I always switch it over to three times camera and those are just a few of the negative things.
63
But even with that being said, the bigger sensor really performs outstanding in low light environments.
64
And being able to use the three times camera, which is its own separate sensor for talking heads,
65
really does take this camera to the next level rather than just shooting it at one times
66
and zooming in like you get with the Osmo Pocket 4.
67
Also, you can get really closeup shots with that three times camera as well.
68
It just is a great versatile camera for everyday shooting.
69
And truth be told, the 4P is beating out some of my bigger cameras when I'm walking out the door quickly.
70
mainly due to its image quality.
71
Also, its size.
72
It's so small.
73
Think about the form factor difference between a big mirrorless camera on a gimbal and this guy right here.
74
In most lighting conditions, you really won't be able to tell that big of a difference either.
75
It has internal storage built into it, so I like to add an SD card and film everything to that, and if it fills up,
76
then I use my internal storage as a backup.
77
And the battery has been plenty for me.
78
I have not found myself out in the field feeling like, oh, I ran out of battery pretty quickly.
79
Something I figured out rather recently was the one -times camera isn't actually 20 millimeters like they market it.
80
I think they market it as that.
81
It's really about 18 millimeters.
82
That gives you a little bit wider of a frame.
83
That's why I'm not a huge fan of doing talking heads at 18 millimeters
84
because it makes your face look small and the frame look too wide.
85
And because I'm in the United States, I did have to purchase this on eBay.
86
And if I drop it, I might be in trouble because I don't know how to get a warranty for it.
87
So now let's pause this video for a second so we can talk about the sponsor of this video, which is Neewer.
88
The Osmopogit 4P does not have a variable aperture or an adjustable aperture.
89
So the normal way to combat bright light is cranking up your shutter speed.
90
But when you do that, you're going to get a choppy and jittery type of look.
91
So in order to get natural motion blur, you have to set your shutter speed to double whatever your frame rate is.
92
So if I'm shooting in 24 frames per second, I'm going to want to set my frame rate to 1 over 50.
93
And if I go out and shoot with a shutter speed of 1 over 50 and it's super bright outside,
94
my entire shot's going to be completely blown out.
95
That's where ND filters come in.
96
This first set is what I grab the most.
97
I have an ND16, which I grab for cloudy days.
98
ND64 is when it's going to be pretty sunny out.
99
And ND256 is for harsh midday shooting, especially when I'm at the beach.
100
There's also a circular polarizer in here that's going to cut down the reflections off of the water and the car windows.
101
Then I have a second set, which is my run and gun kit.
102
It's a variable ND filter from 2 to 32.
103
So I just rotate it as the light changes instead of having to swap out the filters.
104
It also comes with a CPO and a quarter black diffusion.
105
That's going to soften highlights and give skin tones a more filmic type look.
106
Both of them snap onto the glass and it stays nice and sharp.
107
And the beautiful thing is the glass between both the top and bottom filters is the same exact glass.
108
So if I shoot with the one times and the three times, when I get home, my colors are still going to match up.
109
So if you want to maintain great looking colors and also have a nice looking motion blur without overexposing your shots,
110
make sure to pick these guys up.
111
I will leave a link to them in the description.
112
I think one of the main things that I really wanted to get out of this camera,
113
or at least test to see if it would work, is could I use this instead of something like a mirrorless camera?
114
Could I get wide establishing shots, low angles, foreground movement, slow motion,
115
walking shots, put it in places that I normally couldn't put like a mirrorless camera in?
116
Really just using it as like a story -driven type of camera.
117
And I think that's the biggest plus for me with this camera is there's just so much variety that you can do.
118
You don't need different lenses or different cameras or different setups to get different shots.
119
You can just use like this one camera and then get any shot
120
that you can think of with the exception of anything
121
that has to do with water or higher up
122
because you don't want to get it stuck in a tree
123
and it definitely makes just ordinary moments look way more polished
124
and cinematic than
125
if you were just to shoot
126
it with your phone like this shot right here literally was just water coming out of a gutter
127
but it looks so good in my opinion all right let's jump to the next chapter the
128
so -called 60 millimeter equivalent
129
or the three times camera might be my favorite feature on the pocket 4p it gives talking heads
130
and portraits more flattering perspective it makes product shots
131
and small details feel more intentional i'm able to get like macro type of shots like this acorn
132
but the only downside is that the three times camera uses a smaller sensor
133
so i would not use the three times camera
134
if i was in a low light environment also you can't use d -log 2 with the three times camera
135
so my work around if i plan on shooting in log
136
and i'm going to be back and forth between one times
137
and three times is just shooting in the D -Log 10 -bit.
138
Yeah, it's not going to be as good as D -Log 2 when it comes to color grading,
139
but it's still good enough because one of the major problems
140
that I found myself having when I was shooting between D -Log 2
141
and D -Log is when you get to post -production, you really don't know which clip is which.
142
It's not labeled or anything, so you just kind of have to guess
143
or you have to look at which one looks a little bit more like D -Log 2 compared to D -Log.
144
It became a little bit of an issue.
145
So my workaround is if you're going to shoot D -Log 2, stick with that the whole time.
146
If you're going to shoot with D -Log, stick with that the whole time.
147
You'll be able to use the one times and the three times camera.
148
If you're shooting in D -Log 2, you're stuck to the one times camera.
149
Now, I recently compared the Pocket 4P against the Luna Ultra in a very low light environment,
150
and I was pretty shocked on how well both cameras perform.
151
I'll leave that video in the description if you're interested.
152
But the Pocket 4P does have a dedicated low light mode,
153
and it can be useful when you want the camera to handle most of the settings automatically.
154
Maybe you just want to focus on the composition or the story
155
but personally i prefer to shoot my low light videos in the actual video mode
156
and then switching the exposure over to manual
157
it gives me more control on my iso my shutter speed
158
i don't have to worry about the camera doing any in -body processing
159
that i can't undo once i get to post -production
160
i also feel like the footage looks a little bit more natural
161
when i control it myself but overall if i was in a run
162
and gun environment i would have no problem using the low
163
light video mode the pocket 4p has definitely impressed me more than i originally expected when it comes to low light.
164
All right, we talked a little bit about this earlier in the video, but the Pocket 4P gives you four main color profile options.
165
Standard.
166
Standard is going to give you that finished looking image straight out of camera with good contrast, some saturation, and natural looking colors,
167
but you are not going to get the dynamic range that you would if you shot with D -Log, HDR 10 -bit, or D -Log 2.
168
D -Log gives you a flatter 10 -bit image with more flexibility when it comes to color grading,
169
and D -Log2 gives you even more flexibility or the most dynamic range, especially when you want to adjust your highlights or your shadows.
170
But it also is going to require the most amount of work in post -production.
171
That's one of the reasons why I created LUTs
172
that you could just drag and drop right onto the footage without having to do any color grading at all.
173
Now, the HDR 10 -bit.. is a little bit controversial
174
because a lot of people like to use it
175
and i've used it before and it looks fantastic however the only problem
176
that i have with hdr is
177
that you have to have an hdr monitor to review
178
that footage back so you could shoot a lot of shots in hdr
179
and then maybe send it to a friend or to a phone
180
that doesn't have hdr processing
181
and all of the shots are going to look overexposed as of the time of recording
182
this video a lot of monitors are not hdr capable I learned that the hard way after a long day's shoot.
183
So just keep that in mind if you decide to shoot in HDR.
184
Know where your playback is going to be played back.
185
I find myself shooting with the standard color profile 90 % of the time.
186
Because it's just good enough.
187
It doesn't look too oversaturated.
188
Something like a phone.
189
It doesn't look too digital.
190
Something like I would get with a smaller sensor camera.
191
D -Log and D -Log 2 definitely have their place.
192
But I like to be more intentional when I come to shoot with those profiles rather than just turning to D -Log2,
193
going out and filming with it.
194
I found that when I'm shooting with D -Log or D -Log2, I like to have my exposure compensation set to about 0 .0.
195
Now, I have had some people say in the comments that they like to overexpose their D -Log2 by plus 1 .7,
196
but if you've had that experience, please let me know in the comments.
197
Can it replace a phone or a mirrorless camera?
198
100 % it could replace your phone.
199
You just can't text or call people.
200
And as far as a mirrorless camera, I mean, it really depends.
201
If you're just doing travel videos or vlogging, YouTube videos, family moments, some photography,
202
the Pocket 4P could absolutely replace your larger mirrorless camera.
203
But there will always be a place for a professional mirrorless camera.
204
The 12x zoom, it will not match what a telephoto lens gives you on a true mirrorless camera.
205
And for high -end professional work, you're going to need interchangeable lenses.
206
You're going to need to be able to replace the batteries on the fly
207
you're gonna have sometimes in some cases need dual card slots
208
external recording more control over your exposure control over your aperture
209
so for convenience and everyday content it can replace a camera
210
but when you need more flexibility and the best image quality
211
and reliability then absolutely not
212
so now after a hundred days would I still buy the
213
pocket 4p 100 % yes without even thinking twice about it it's not a perfect camera
214
I mentioned some of the things that I don't like about it.
215
But if you're doing a lot of run and gun filming, the image quality is outstanding.
216
100 % I would pick this guy up.
217
I love using this camera with a BTS shooter who can
218
get a lot of my behind the scenes type shooting where I don't have to use my phone anymore.
219
Sometimes phone footage, the mid -tones get lifted up too much.
220
You can tell that a digital plastic look, especially on skin tone.
221
But this guy does a great job.
222
I'm rarely disappointed with the image quality that I get out of this camera.
223
If there's ever a time where the image
224
that I shot doesn't look too good it's usually user error
225
but if you want something that's always going to be with you
226
that you can go out
227
and get cinematic shots
228
then I would definitely recommend picking one of these guys up
229
let me know in the comments what you would like for
230
me to verse against the off pocket 4p along with other videos
231
that you would like to see me create on this particular camera thanks for watching
232
I will see you in the next video
