And we are talking about one of those topics that everybody thinks about, but not everyone feels comfortable talking about and discussing.

And that would be money.

Yes, exactly.

And we're not just talking about money in the sense of shopping or the prices of things.

To really challenge your English listening skills and stretch your B2 English vocabulary, We're going to talk about the slightly thorny, awkward side of money.

Things like, should couples combine their finances?

Is it rude to ask someone how much they earn?

Or should friends talk openly about their salaries, their debts, or other financial pressures?

Or is money just one of those things that should always stay private?

So I think this is a perfect B2 and definitely into the C1 level.

This is a really good conversation topic because it's personal, it's cultural, it can feel a bit emotional and slightly uncomfortable.

Okay, so let's get into part one.

I think the most balanced part and a good place to start is with this idea.

Money is personal, but complete silence around money can create real problems.

Now, I want to be clear,

I completely understand why people don't want to reveal every detail of their financial situation. and sometimes even shame.

I mean, remember the last time you felt ashamed about the bank account balance that you had in your bank?

If someone earns a lot, they might worry that they might be coming across kind of arrogant

or out of touch if they try to talk about money.

On the other hand, if someone's earning very little, they might feel very exposed, embarrassed, or judged by their peers.

And if someone is dealing with debt, which a lot of people are, they might carry a sense of shame, even though debt is far more common than many people realize.

So I do understand why people avoid full financial transparency.

But in many cases, privacy is not just about being secretive.

It's about a way of protecting your dignity and keeping certain parts of your life from being public discussion.

It could definitely be a can of worms once someone's financial situation becomes exposed.

I also think the problem is that complete privacy can easily turn into a culture of silence, which isn't healthy either.

This is very common in the UK as well.

If friends never talk honestly about their own financial struggles or pressures,

then everyone's forced to pretend that they're doing fine and maybe doing better than they are, even if they're actually struggling.

but with no real practical understanding about savings, debts, rent, how to budget or how to plan for the future as well.

So I get that while it can be a a tricky or awkward topic that makes people uncomfortable, and that privacy can protect people,

the silence creates this confusion, maybe unrealistic expectations, and even some unfairness.

I mean, I definitely didn't grow up talking about money, not even at school.

I guess we learned how to balance a checkbook, but we don't even do that anymore.

I mean, talking about the big picture of money as well, we never talked about that in my family.

So I think that's where the distinction becomes really important.

We need to separate this personal curiosity from practical necessity.

And there may be no clear reason for asking other than someone might be kind of nosy

and just want to compare themselves to someone else.

It could put the other person on the spot and make that other person feel caught off guard or uncomfortable.

And talking about money is not just gossip or being intrusive.

It's useful information that can aid in making sound financial decisions.

Yeah, I think that's a very important point.

Talking openly about money can be very helpful and that there is a time and a place for it.

And talking about money is still easier said than done.

It's still such a difficult obstacle for people to overcome because the stigma...

around money and how much you have or if you're struggling, that stigma is still really strong.

I think in the UK it's been made such a personal favour to have money issues.

Like it's your fault if you're struggling.

So if a close friend came to me and said, I'm really struggling with rent this month.

That was something extremely personal.

That's an extremely intimate confession that would take a lot of confidence to admit, even to a really close friend.

And it's funny because if the same friend said they were having relationship trouble or issues at work, we'd be completely sympathetic.

And we'd be more than willing to lend an ear and accept it as just part of life.

But then as soon as it's money problems, we all kind of.. squirm and feel like we're intruding, even if we didn't even bring it up.

Yeah, so maybe kind of a neutral conclusion is that money should be private and it can be private, but it's not untouchable.

People deserve boundaries.

You know, you don't need to know everything about my life.

But they also need language in order to have these honest conversations.

Because when money becomes completely taboo, people end up dealing with financial pressure completely alone.

You know, so they compare themselves silently.

They assume everyone else is doing better than they are because, well, nobody needs to talk about it.

Maybe they avoid difficult conversations with their partners.

And sometimes this silence can definitely be more damaging than a simple conversation would have been.

There was even an advertising campaign from a bank in the UK and they called it the M word.

Because again, they know people feel so uncomfortable talking about money that they don't even say the word.

But yeah, it's a good example of at the time.

Money doesn't need to be everyone's favorite topic, but yeah, it doesn't have to be a social competition and

if we never talk about it it just becomes harder to understand what's normal what's fair

and what financial problems people might be dealing with.

So the next point of this B2 money discussion is maybe a bit more contentious.

We're talking about splitting financial responsibilities with our significant others.

So maybe your wife, husband or partner.

So what's the best way for a couple to share the cost of living together?

who should pay for what and how much is fair.

All right, if I had to take a firm position, I'd say a 50 /50 split is only fair when both people are in a genuinely similar financial position.

On paper, I see how it looks reasonable.

It's two adults.

They share a home, so they split the rent, bills, groceries and holidays, even straight down the middle.

And it seems like a very elegant solution.

It avoids the awkwardness of calculating of who should pay more.

But this cookie cutter solution doesn't work for everyone.

Like if one person earns significantly more than the other, paying the same amount, doesn't create the same amount of financial pressure.

For one partner, half the rent might be perfectly manageable, but for the other, it might take a huge chunk out of their earnings every month.

It might force them to cut back on basic comforts or worry about unexpected expenses.

So, The real question is not, are we paying the same amount?

Maybe the better question is, are we carrying the same financial burden?

Well, yeah, and on paper, when you say a 50 /50 split, right, that sounds perfectly fair.

And but In reality, right, equal numbers can hide very unequal realities, right?

Because, again, that's just on paper.

That's kind of where that pressure and that maybe even, maybe even resentment can start to build because they might agree to things.

because they don't want to seem difficult or financially irresponsible.

But underneath that, they may feel trapped by a person because of this fairness that's not actually fair.

I think that's where resentment, bitterness really starts to become a real risk, especially if the higher earner insists on splitting everything equally.

The lower owner may feel unsupported, Or maybe they might think that the partner is ignoring this obvious difference between their situations.

and they might think: you know, this is easy for you and stressful for me, but you still want me to pay the same anyway?

So it could make a relationship feel less like a partnership and more like a financial test.

But At the same time, I think we have to be fair to the other side.

If one person pays much more, they may also start to feel some resentment.

They might feel that they're carrying the relationship financially,

So, yeah, either way, money can very easily become tied to power,

So sooner or later, every couple needs to have that talk.

And I mean, if you ask me, I really do think that proportional splitting can be a much more equitable model for a lot of couples.

that same proportion could feel more balanced, right?

I pay 70%, you pay 30%.

Both people are still contributing, but they're contributing according to what they can realistically afford, OK, based on their actual income.

It also avoids pretending that two very different salaries live in the same financial reality.

For example, if the rent is expensive, a proportional split might allow both partners to live in the same home without one person feeling financially squeezed every month.

But it has to be handled carefully.

There's no perfect solution.

Do we secretly measure people's worth by how much money they make?

would instinctively say no. no it's not tied to your salary right because that sounds unfair and that sounds kind of shallow.

You know, we want to believe that we value people for their kindness, their loyalty, their intelligence, creativity, or the way they show up for people that they love.

But in reality, salary has a way of creeping up into how we evaluate people.

We may not say it directly, but we notice who owns a home, who can afford holidays, who's always anxious about rent, who appears to be thriving,

Social media doesn't help when you see all your rich friends doing rich things and you feel even worse about yourself.

To play devil's advocate i also understand though why people do connect money with certain qualities because A salary,

If someone has worked for years and years and years to build a career, maybe they've taken some risks and they've climbed the ladder within their industry,

then yeah, of course, their higher income may represent those kinds of traits in someone.

It might represent years of stress, long hours, difficult choices, and that high salary is a kind of.. reward so i don't think it's completely irrational

to see money as one sign of stability or competence in your work.

I guess the problem is when we turn that small sign into the whole story.

Because there are plenty of hardworking,

intelligent, responsible people who do not earn huge salaries especially if they work in certain industries like the care industry,

education, hospitality or creative industries, or maybe they've just had family obligations that limit their options.

If you treat the salary as the ultimate measure of someone's value, you probably end up rewarding their status more than their actual character.

And I mean, you can definitely see that with close friends and family.

Money can quietly alter the emotional atmosphere in a room.

If one sibling earns much more than the others, suddenly every family dinner can carry this invisible comparison.

And that's why this financial silence can be so damaging.

People might be struggling privately, not because they're irresponsible, because they're terrified of being seen as less successful

Yeah, and that problem can become even more intense in a romantic relationship because the money's not.. just about lifestyle, it can touch on love,

respect, power, your identity and even your own self -worth.

If one partner earns much more, the lower earner might still feel like they bring less to the relationship, even if they contribute in other deep and meaningful ways.

Like they might cook, they might organise the home, or they might support the partner emotionally and create stability that, doesn't appear on a payslip.

But if a couple has absorbed the idea that income equals value,

then even those important contributions can start to feel invisible or underappreciated.

And then on top of that, the higher earner may also feel some pressure.

They might think that I'm carrying the financial weight and I'm the one keeping us secure.

So the emotional danger is is not just that one person owns more, it's that maybe both people start using money as evidence of who matters more,

I mean, this becomes even more brutal because salary is often treated as a public symbol of professional worth.

Even when nobody says it out loud, people compare job titles, promotions, bonuses, office status, and who seems to be progressing faster.

And when colleagues discover that they're being paid differently, For similar work, it can feel deeply personal.

It's not just, oh, the numbers are different.

So yeah, you can see just how many different problems arise when you try and boil someone down into this quantifiable

number like a salary.

But I think the strongest conclusion is your salary matters.

but it should never be confused with your self -worth.

Money can affect your choices, your stress levels, your sense of security and your future.

And it's naive to pretend that money doesn't help or doesn't matter

but treating your income as a measure of your human value is just corrosive and unfair,

constrain friendships, can feel resentment in relationships.

It can make people feel small in the workplace.

And ultimately, a person's salary can tell you something about their circumstances, maybe just their industry they're in or what stage of their career that they're in.
