1
One fake kiss and a whole mess of consequences.
2
Welcome to the Love Hypothesis.
3
So our girl Olive Smith is an aspiring Stanford PhD student.
4
She's 26 and proud wearer of expired contact lenses.
5
Yes, which is how right after her interview,
6
she ends up in a random bathroom,
7
practically blind, trying to rinse out the burning regret from her eyes.
8
That's when a tall and mysterious guy walks in
9
and instead of wondering
10
if she's in men's bathroom she just starts yapping even though
11
she's half blind girl please she assumes oh he's a fellow phd student
12
and starts explaining her research dreams like it's a bathroom theme
13
ted talk a few weeks later bam she's accepted into the program apparently stanford saw her almost blind dedication
14
and said yes she's the one flash forward.
15
Olive's now knee-deep in her PhD and works in Dr. Aslan's lab.
16
Then, one night, in a moment of pure genius,
17
she kisses the first man she sees.
18
To convince her best friend that she's in a relationship,
19
only to realize that she just accidentally kissed Dr. Adam Carlson,
20
the tenured, terrifying Stanford professor with dry-ass personality and body of a Marvel reject.
21
They pull apart, and Adam,
22
ever the ray of sunshine, accuses her of assault.
23
What a meet cute.
24
Olive's like, uh, I asked you.
25
And he's like, I snorted.
26
Which, apparently, is not legally binding consent.
27
So she explains.
28
Her best friend, Ann, likes this guy,
29
Jeremy, whom Olive used to date.
30
Olive told Ann she's dating someone else so they could be together.
31
So when Ann showed up at the lab, Olive panicked.
32
Lips were kissed.
33
Mistakes were made.
34
Great choices all around.
35
So Olive, still recovering from publicly kissing the academic grim reaper,
36
mumbles an apology and flees the scene like it's a crime thriller.
37
She doesn't even notice that Adam calls her by her name,
38
Which would be fine, except she never told him her name.
39
Creepy?
40
Coincidence?
41
Hitting cameras?
42
Who knows?
43
But she's got bigger problems,
44
like finding lab space for her super important research on early pancreatic cancer detection.
45
Then boom, plot twist from the academic gods, Tom Benton.
46
Fancy Harvard professor.
47
Cancer research rock star.
48
Owner of probably too many tweed jackets.
49
He's interested in her project, wants to meet her in person, in two weeks.
50
Olive's day is going great until her best friend,
51
Ahn, shows up, looking like she's about to stage an intervention.
52
Did you seriously kiss Adam Carlson?
53
Olive's brain short circuits.
54
Flashback time.
55
She and Ahn met as the only two non-cis white male students in their class,
56
trauma bonded over institutional nonsense,
57
and boom, instant rider die besties.
58
On is basically her emotional support human.
59
So naturally, Olive does the mature thing.
60
She lies, again.
61
But before she can cook up a decent excuse, he walks in.
62
Oh my god.
63
Dr. Death Glare himself, just casually strolling like he wasn't the center of her latest identity crisis.
64
And instead of correcting on,
65
Adam straight up plays along.
66
Yes, we're dating.
67
He might as well have said while sipping tea and burning the world down behind him.
68
Later, Olive keeps up the charade.
69
Because what's one more lie when you've already fake-dated a professor via public make-out?
70
So she doubles down, tells Anne again that she's totally dating Adam and gives her the green light to go for Jeremy.
71
Now back on campus, Olive starts noticing something weird.
72
People are staring, whispering.
73
Even Malcolm, her drama-loving, zero-chill roommate,
74
corners her like, um, hello,
75
you're dating Adam Carlson and you didn't tell me.
76
And that's when it hits her.
77
The entire department knows.
78
Well, duh.
79
Her little one-tiny-fake-kiss-to-fool-my-best-friend plan?
80
Yeah, it's gone full wildfire.
81
No survivors.
82
Gossip levels?
83
Code red.
84
So Olive, being the emotionally exhausted liar she now is,
85
drags herself to Adam's lab to confess.
86
Hey, so tiny update, everyone thinks we're dating and it's kinda my fault and I'm so sorry.
87
But Adam?
88
He doesn't seem even slightly bothered.
89
In fact, he seems kind of chill about it.
90
Suspiciously chill.
91
Olive picks up on the vibe and finally asks Dr. Doom and Gloom Carlson why he's so weirdly okay with the rumors.
92
And that's when he drops the bomb.
93
Turns out, Stanford thinks Adam's about to ghost them for another university.
94
So in response, they froze some of his research funds.
95
Academic pettiness at its finest.
96
So now Adam's hoping the dating rumor,
97
yes, this train wreck of a lie,
98
will make the department believe he's got personal ties to Stanford.
99
You know, like love.
100
Or at least fake love with a panicked grad student.
101
Basically, this man is using her as romantic leverage for federal funding.
102
But Olive needs time to process everything like she wasn't the one kissing him,
103
so few days later, Olive walks into Adam's office like,
104
okay, let's fake date for real.
105
Because ever since the rumor started,
106
people have been treating her like she's royalty.
107
Professors are nicer, labs open up, doors literally open faster.
108
Adam already looked into it.
109
Turns out it's allowed if he isn't teaching her any subject.
110
So yeah, it's official.
111
They're fake dating for funding, respect, and trauma bonding.
112
Time to set the rules.
113
Because every fake relationship needs a legally binding contract,
114
or at least an awkward chat.
115
Rule one, fake date on campus only.
116
No romantic nonsense outside Stanford Grounds.
117
This is a business transaction, not The Bachelor.
118
Rule two, no sex.
119
Olive says it out loud.
120
Adam blinks once.
121
They move on.
122
Rule three, no dating other people during the arrangement.
123
Not because of feelings, ew,
124
no, but because it'd be messy.
125
And just like that, they were fake dating.
126
What could possibly go wrong?
127
Part two is coming, and trust me, it only gets messier.
