1
Peace be with you, friends.
2
Our readings for this 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time, they're marvelous.
3
They're about this theme that's so basic to the spiritual life, and the theme is detachment.
4
I want to get into it, though, by referencing a song.
5
I go on a lot of long car trips now in my diocese, so I go from Wisconsin to South Dakota,
6
so I'm in the car a lot.
7
And I listen to books on tape a lot—books on tape, I'm dating myself—but I have, you know, my iPhone, and I'll ask for music.
8
And so I'm a big, as you know, Bob Dylan fan,
9
but after Bob Dylan, probably I like the Beatles the best and a lot of classic rock, the Rolling Stones and the Who and Van Morrison.
10
And, you know, that's my thing.
11
Well, as you know, these machines, they learn our preferences.
12
So she's listened to me, you know, asking for Beatles songs all the time.
13
Now I find almost anytime I ask for a song, the second or third one that comes up afterwards is George Harrison's song,
14
All Things Must Pass.
15
Of course, for the young kids, ask your grandparents about George Harrison, but he was one of the Beatles.
16
And right after the Beatles broke up, Harrison comes out with this marvelous double album called All Things Must Pass.
17
And the title song is born of his Hindu interest.
18
And it's about the even essence of everything in the world.
19
All things must pass.
20
So, you know, the sunset doesn't last all evening.
21
The nighttime doesn't last forever.
22
And then the great chorus, all things must pass.
23
All things must pass away.
24
It's an interesting thing.
25
I hear that song so often now.
26
I've gone home to my home and I have my guitar.
27
I'm not a great guitar player.
28
I'm like a campfire guitar player.
29
But I can play songs and chords.
30
And so I looked up
31
All Things Must Pass.
32
And it's an interesting thing that as it goes into the chorus, which is a very singable chorus, but usually as you make that transition,
33
it gives you a major chord that draws everybody in.
34
Well, All Things Must Pass goes to a minor chord, to B minor, as it goes into the chorus,
35
which gives it that kind of moody quality.
36
All things must pass.
37
All things must pass away.
38
Look, almost every major philosopher,
39
almost every major religious figure the world over has intuited this great truth about our world.
40
Good, and yes, there are good things in it, but they don't last.
41
They don't endure.
42
Sunset, you know, a beautiful sunset lasts for a while.
43
We exult in it, and then it's gone.
44
Our meal that we're enjoying immensely, and we eat it with great pleasure, and in a couple of minutes, it's gone.
45
A great conversation.
46
You're with a friend, and you're sharing your life at a deep level, and you're just loving this conversation,
47
finding it very interesting, wonderful, and then it's over.
48
Maybe, you know, most poignantly, it's with a piece of music.
49
The way music is structured, not like a sculpture that you can at least see for a long time.
50
Music comes and it goes, doesn't it?
51
I mean, the notes flow past you, you're listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony or some marvelous thing, and then it's over.
52
All things must pass.
53
All things must pass away.
54
That's life.
55
Well, no. With George Harrison in mind, so those like me, old enough to remember George Harrison, but young people, ask Siri about it.
56
She'll play it for you.
57
With that in mind, look at our first reading from the marvelous book of Ecclesiastes.
58
Vanity of vanities, says Kohaleth.
59
Vanity of vanities, all things are vanity.
60
Kohaleth, it's just
61
Hebrew, it means like the assemblymen, something like that.
62
You could say the churchman, because kahal is something like church assembly.
63
So this person, this Kohalath, he's been identified in the great tradition with King Solomon,
64
someone who had it all.
65
Think of Solomon, the wisest, richest, most powerful figure of his time.
66
His conclusion?
67
All things must pass.
68
Vanity of vanities.
69
The Hebrew behind vanity there is very interesting.
70
It's the word hebel.
71
Hebel means something like wind or even like bubble.
72
It sort of sounds like bubble, hebel, bubble.
73
All things are like a bubble.
74
Think of a bubble.
75
And as it's floating there, and he goes, hey, that's beautiful.
76
Look at that.
77
And sometimes, you know, colors kind of play on a bubble.
78
And then, like that, it's gone.
79
All things pass away.
80
All things pass away.
81
Listen, you see, much of the book of Kohalath is simply specifying this idea, giving example upon example.
82
But listen to some of them.
83
Here's one who's labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who's not labored over it, he must leave his property.
84
So think of someone whose whole life has been about property
85
and riches and I'm gonna work and I'm gonna get up early
86
and I go to bed late and I'm gonna do whatever I can to get the biggest house and the most money.
87
And then what?
88
Your life, it's over, the psalmist says, like a sigh.
89
I'm right, aren't I?
90
Anyone old enough, you know that.
91
Your life's over like a sigh.
92
And you've spent all this time and energy.
93
And what happens to all that stuff you piled up?
94
It goes to someone who maybe never worked a day in his life.
95
It's inherited by someone that you don't even know.
96
All things must pass.
97
All things must pass away.
98
What profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart? with which he's labored under the sun.
99
All his days are sorrow and grief.
100
At night, his mind is not at rest.
101
This also is vanity.
102
I can think of all the things that we think about and worry about and fret about,
103
and we're plotting and planning and trying to get this and get that and wealth and honor, and people will think highly of me,
104
and I'm gonna do everything I can to get that reward, and I don't want people thinking highly of that guy.
105
I want them thinking highly of me, and so I fret and I worry. And what?
106
All things must pass.
107
All things must pass away.
108
Vanity of vanity, bubble of bubbles, everything's like a bubble.
109
Okay, so you say, well, am I left in sort of despair now?
110
So what's the point?
111
Life just seems like it doesn't mean anything.
112
No, no, no, no. Listen now to St. Paul.
113
This is our second reading, Paul to the Colossians.
114
If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where
115
Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
116
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
117
Okay, now, just to be really clear about this, this is not some despairing flight from the world spirituality.
118
This is not to say, well, this life is just a waste of time,
119
forget about it, and let's get up to heaven as soon as we can.
120
No, no, we're playing a much more subtle game here.
121
We're not saying everything in this world is bad.
122
No, no, what we're saying is nothing in this world finally lasts.
123
Therefore, what?
124
Two things.
125
wear this world lightly.
126
It doesn't mean disdain it or hate it.
127
It means don't cling to it.
128
Don't think it's going to make you happy, because it's just like one of those, you know, those cottonwood seeds that float through the air,
129
and if you try to grab it, the very act of grabbing will push it away from you.
130
So, if you grasp at this world, it'll turn to dust in your fingers.
131
Appreciate it.
132
Love it.
133
That sunset that George Harrison sings about.
134
Look at it.
135
Take it in.
136
Beautiful, beautiful.
137
Love it.
138
But then let go of it.
139
That's not your ultimate happiness.
140
The house that you live in, that you've labored for, good.
141
Enjoy it.
142
Don't cling to it.
143
Those honors that people give you, yeah, they're nice.
144
Enjoy it, you know, for the moment, and then forget about it.
145
Where should your eyes be fixed?
146
Where should the eyes of your soul be fixed?
147
Again, listen, if you were raised with Christ, seek what is above.
148
Now, what's above?
149
That means the realm of God.
150
That means the good things of heaven.
151
That means the permanent things.
152
Following the will of God, that's where you should have your soul directed.
153
Remember last week, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
154
Keep yourself aligned.
155
put your will within the context of God's will, keep your heart fixed above,
156
then you can take in this world with the proper attitude.
157
Not clinging to it desperately.
158
No, no, because you know your treasure's in heaven.
159
Your ultimate goal is union with God, and God does not pass away.
160
God does not change.
161
God is not evanescent.
162
So fix your heart on God, and then you can let go of this world in the proper attitude.
163
Now, with all that in mind, let's look briefly at the gospel, Jesus' great parable.
164
He told him a parable.
165
There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.
166
He asked himself, what shall I do?
167
I don't have space to store my harvest.
168
So here's a guy, very successful.
169
We'd say today, you know, he's a private equity investor who just made tons and tons of money,
170
and he's got homes and cars and vacation homes and all that.
171
What will I do?
172
I know I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones.
173
There I shall store all my grain and all the goods and say to myself, you've got many good things stored up for years to come.
174
Eat, drink, and be merry, okay?
175
See, it's an image of somebody who's clinging desperately to this world,
176
who's going to find his satisfaction in all the things that he possesses.
177
And, you know, I'll just build a bigger barn, and there'll be more and more room, and I'll never run out.
178
Think of someone saying, a billionaire, I couldn't spend all this money in a lifetime.
179
I got everything I need.
180
All things must pass.
181
Listen, but God said to him, you fool, this night your life will be demanded of you and the things you prepared,
182
to whom will they belong?
183
There it is.
184
My whole life's been about storing up all the goods of the world.
185
You have a man, tonight, tonight you're gonna die.
186
All of it's gone.
187
All of it will fall into someone else's hands, someone that you don't even know, maybe.
188
Listen now.
189
Thus it will be for all who store up treasure for themselves, but are not rich in what matters to God.
190
Now, let's get down to brass tacks as I close.
191
What matters to God?
192
Love.
193
God is love, right?
194
Heaven is the place where love obtains radically.
195
That's what heaven means.
196
What lasts, I'll quote
197
Cardinal George again here, the only things we take with us into heaven are the things we've given away on earth.
198
He doesn't mean like, okay, if I give away all these cars and houses and so I'll have them in heaven.
199
What he means is it's that attitude of giving away.
200
That's the substance of heaven.
201
There are three things that last, right?
202
St. Paul said, and that's what we want.
203
All things must pass in this world.
204
Okay, so what lasts?
205
Paul says three things, faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.
206
Why?
207
Because in heaven, I don't need faith, I'll see.
208
I don't need hope because I've realized my goal.
209
But what will last?
210
Love.
211
Love is what heaven is.
212
And so look up George Harrison's song.
213
Listen to it.
214
Read the book of Kohalath.
215
They're making the same point.
216
And then say, all right, so what does last?
217
Love.
218
The things of heaven.
219
What is above, not what's here on earth.
220
Keep the eyes of your soul fix there and you'll find the treasure you're looking for.
221
And God bless you.

  • “sh” और “zh” की ध्वनियाँ: treasure /ˈtɹɛʒəɹ/, transition /tɹænˈzɪʃ.ən/, conclusion /kənˈkluːʒən/, vacation /veɪˈkeɪ.ʃən/, satisfaction /sætɪsˈfækʃən/
  • लंबे शब्द — बलाघात सही रखें: desperately /ˈdɛs.p(ə.)ɹət.li/, anxiety /æŋˈzaɪ.əti/, satisfaction /sætɪsˈfækʃən/, philosopher /fəˈlɑsəfɚ/, spirituality /ˌspɪɹ.ə.t͡ʃuˈæl.ə.tɪ/

  • /z/ — इसे “ज” (/dʒ/) न बनाएँ: transition /tɹænˈzɪʃ.ən/, anxiety /æŋˈzaɪ.əti/, afterwards /ˈæf.tɚ.wɚdz/, wisdom /ˈwɪzdəm/, possess /pəˈzɛs/
