1
Hi, everyone.
2
Welcome to another English vocabulary podcast episode here on High Level Listening.
3
Do you ever feel more like an introvert or are you more of an extrovert?
4
Now, today we've got lots of great vocabulary to talk about your personality.
5
Yes, we do.
6
And like always, we've got two short stories, one in British English with me, Mark, and one in American English with Kat from the US.
7
And both of them are packed with natural B1, B2 vocabulary that native speakers use all the time.
8
So you'll hear lots of different vocabulary at different levels, phrases like recharge your batteries, the life of the party,
9
mingle, small talk, and keep to yourself.
10
Yeah.
11
And if you enjoy learning vocabulary through conversational stories and classes,
12
just like this one, we have much more of that waiting for you in our My Year of English vocabulary ebook.
13
And we have units connected to all of our videos.
14
So, there's over a hundred different everyday topics for you to improve your natural everyday spoken English.
15
You can find the link to that in the description below.
16
Okay, let's get into our first story.
17
So, Kat, have you always been really outgoing or did that come with time?
18
um yeah i i think i've always been pretty outgoing i love being around people
19
and i usually feel really comfortable in social situations
20
if i say walk into a room where i don't know anyone i'm totally fine striking up a conversation
21
and getting to know people i definitely feed off of other people's energy
22
but of course there are days when i'm just completely socialed out
23
and need some time to myself okay so that was the first listen don't worry if you didn't catch everything.
24
We're going to go over everything.
25
But now it's Mark's turn.
26
Mark, do you kind of enjoy being sort of the center of attention or do you prefer your own company?
27
I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
28
That's just my nature.
29
I find big groups a little bit overwhelming.
30
Like a few days ago, I was invited to a large flat party.
31
And while it sounded lovely, crowded social events always leave me feeling completely drained.
32
I do like being social, but sometimes I like to stay home to recharge my batteries
33
or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates instead.
34
Okay, so those are our stories.
35
As Kat said, don't worry if you didn't catch everything the first time.
36
We're about to go back to the start
37
and go through them line by line and highlight and explain all the best vocabulary about being extroverted,
38
where maybe you're more outgoing and like talking to other people
39
or introverted maybe you're a bit quieter prefer smaller groups well
40
we'll start with cat's story again first uh back to the
41
beginning of yours you're fairly social aren't you yeah i've always been pretty outgoing
42
so i start with oh yeah yeah sure right yeah
43
so mark asked me you're fairly social aren't you
44
so that's a yes or no question aren't you yeah i am so oh yeah i've always been pretty outgoing
45
i've always been pretty outgoing now in english we do like
46
to use the word always it doesn't mean every single moment of every single day, but we love to use it,
47
especially when we're talking about our experiences or our personality from the past.
48
I have always been outgoing.
49
Since I was a kid, since I was a teenager, since I was a young adult, I've always been pretty outgoing.
50
Now, we'll put some emphasis.
51
I've always, I've always been pretty outgoing.
52
I've always been pretty outgoing outgoing is where you like to
53
try new things you like to meet new people you leave the house
54
and want some adventure
55
so i've always been pretty outgoing yeah i often see you mingling at parties i love being around people
56
and i usually feel really comfortable in social situations
57
well i love being around people and i usually feel really comfortable in social situations Okay.
58
So Mark said, I often see you mingling at parties.
59
Mingling is where you go out and chat with different people, chat with this person, chat with this person,
60
move from people to people.
61
You're mingling, mingling, chatting, getting to know people.
62
So I love being around people.
63
I love being around people.
64
We could also say I love to be around people
65
that sounds like more like a fact yeah i love to be around people but i love
66
Being around people sounds like an activity, talking with them, listening to them, partying with them, going out and doing things with them.
67
I love being around people.
68
And I usually feel really comfortable in social situations.
69
Usually, usually.
70
I usually feel, so this is a fact, I usually feel really comfortable.
71
Comfortable.
72
I know that's not the way it's spelled, but we say comfortable.
73
So I usually feel really comfortable in social situations, social situations.
74
This can cover everything from work, networking, from meeting people in a meeting.
75
It could be meeting people after work.
76
It could be meeting friends, talking to strangers, going to a party, everything in between.
77
Social situations.
78
So I love being around people and I usually feel really comfortable in social situations.
79
What about when you don't know anybody there?
80
Yeah, that one's a tough one.
81
But if I walk into a room where I don't know anyone, I'm totally fine striking up a conversation and getting to know people.
82
If I walk into a room where I don't know anyone, I'm totally fine striking up a conversation and getting to know people.
83
so we usually say you walk into a room you walk into a party right
84
that means you're kind of you were outside and now you're joining so i'm
85
if i walk into a room where i don't know anyone
86
okay uh uh i thought my friend was gonna be here
87
but i don't know anyone here
88
if i walk into a room where i don't know anyone i'm totally fine striking up a conversation
89
striking up a conversation striking up a conversation sounds like I will just go up
90
and say hi hi how's it going hi I'm Kat oh
91
what are you guys talking about oh hey how do you
92
know the hostess I think I've met you before do we know each other
93
so just going up and starting a conversation
94
but striking a conversation sounds like we're starting a fire you know you have like a piece of rock, and you have the lint,
95
and you're trying to start a conversation.
96
You're starting a fire, right?
97
So you're striking up a conversation and getting to know people.
98
So I know my friends, but before I got to know them,
99
right, I am getting to know someone is that step -by -step, asking questions, listening, finding out more.
100
So we are getting to know each other.
101
We are getting to know people step -by -step.
102
So if I walk into a room where I don't know anyone, I'm totally fine striking up a conversation and getting to know people.
103
Okay.
104
So do you consider yourself a true extrovert?
105
Oh, I mean, I definitely feed off of other people's energy, but of course there are days when I'm just completely socialed out and need some time to myself.
106
I mean, I definitely feed off of other people's energy, but of course there are days when I'm just completely socialed out and need some time to myself.
107
Okay, this is a good phrase.
108
I feed off of, you don't need the of, but off of or off other people's energy.
109
So if I'm feeding, it sounds like I'm eating, but when we use the word feed, it kind of means it fuels me.
110
It gives me fuel, right?
111
So if I go to a party, everybody's laughing, having fun.
112
I get more energy from that.
113
I feed off other people's energy.
114
So their positiveness, oh, I'm feeling positive now too.
115
So I feed off other people's energy.
116
That is their energy, other people's energy.
117
I feed off her energy.
118
I feed off their energy.
119
But of course, there are days when I'm just completely socialed out.
120
You know, it's funny.
121
I looked up this word socialed out because it's a term that I've used definitely in the past, say, 10 years.
122
I'm socialed out.
123
S -O -C -I -A -L -E -D, socialed out, means I've spent too much time with people and I'm feeling exhausted.
124
I don't want to see people.
125
I want to be at home by myself alone and
126
if I'm just completely socialed out I definitely need some time to myself you could say some time for myself
127
or some some time to spend by myself I need some
128
time to myself just leave me alone don't talk to me
129
so I definitely feed off other people's energy
130
but of course there are days when I'm just completely socialed out and need some time to myself.
131
Okay, well.
132
That's a lot to absorb.
133
We'll go through Kat's story one more time as a friendly conversation.
134
So back to the start.
135
You're fairly social, aren't you?
136
Yeah, I've always been pretty outgoing.
137
Yeah, I often see you mingling at parties.
138
Sure, I love being around people and I usually feel really comfortable in social situations.
139
What about when you don't know anybody there? in?
140
I mean, if I walk into a room where I don't know anyone, I'm totally fine striking up a conversation and getting to know people.
141
Okay.
142
So do you say to yourself a true extrovert?
143
I definitely feed off other people's energy, but of course there are days when I'm just completely socialed out and need some time to myself.
144
All right.
145
So let's practice and hear all the vocabulary from Mark's side.
146
So Mark, do you enjoy being the center of attention or do you prefer your own company?
147
I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
148
So I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
149
So yeah, through this episode, we're talking about our personality and our character.
150
And a really good phrase you can use to talk about yourself is I'm definitely,
151
or really, seriously, I'm definitely someone who does this.
152
So I'm definitely someone who helps my friends.
153
I'm definitely someone who likes to solve problems.
154
And I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
155
Value, usually you see it as a noun, but if I value it, then I think it's important.
156
So my alone time is important to me.
157
I value my alone time.
158
And I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
159
Alone time is time by myself.
160
I don't think there's any negative connotation here.
161
Alone doesn't have a negative meaning.
162
Lonely sounds like you feel sad.
163
That one's negative.
164
But being alone is just being without anybody else.
165
And some people feel totally comfortable in that kind of situation.
166
So alone time could be being at home, reading a book, just watching TV, looking at my phone, exercising.
167
All of that is alone time.
168
So I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
169
As someone who doesn't love being alone all that often, why do you value your alone time so much?
170
And that's just my nature.
171
I find big groups a little bit overwhelming.
172
That's just my nature.
173
I find big groups a little bit overwhelming.
174
so again talking about my personality sometimes you have a part of your character
175
or a trait and maybe you like it
176
or maybe you don't really like it
177
but you can't really change it there are some parts of our character
178
that we can't really change and that is my nature it's my nature
179
or that's just my nature just is like shrugging my shoulders like well i don't know why i'm like
180
that I don't know why that happens to me, but it's just who I am.
181
It's just my nature.
182
So yeah, maybe I wish I was a little bit more extroverted or a little bit more comfortable in big groups, but I'm not.
183
And I can't change that.
184
It's just my nature.
185
I find big groups a little bit overwhelming.
186
Big groups is maybe parties with a lot of people.
187
It could be playing a team sport with lots of players on either team, a team building exercise with a large group.
188
And yeah, it can be a little bit overwhelming.
189
You feel a little bit anxious or nervous.
190
And the situation with all these new people, new faces, new names that you have to remember, you have to also be social and switched on.
191
That can be quite overwhelming.
192
It makes you a little bit nervous or uncomfortable.
193
So that's just my nature.
194
I find big groups a little bit overwhelming.
195
No, I'm sorry to hear that.
196
Has that kind of happened recently?
197
A few days ago I was invited to a large flat party and while it sounded lovely, crowded social events always leave me feeling completely drained.
198
So a few days ago I was invited to a large flat party and while it sounded lovely.
199
Crowded social events always leave me feeling completely drained.
200
So I'm kind of the opposite of Kat here.
201
She said that when she's in a social situation, she feeds off the energy.
202
So people with their energy gives her energy.
203
She takes some of it.
204
I'm the opposite.
205
Big or crowded social events leave me.
206
also at the end of the event when i leave and i go home it leaves me completely drained
207
we usually hear this with like gas in your car petrol in your car
208
when it goes down and down and down and down
209
and it's empty it is drained the tank is drained and my emotional or social tank is drained.
210
The social event has taken it all and I've got nothing left.
211
So it leaves me drained.
212
It drains me or it is draining.
213
All of those have the same meaning.
214
It takes your energy and at the end, you feel very tired.
215
So yeah, a few days ago, I was invited or someone invited me.
216
I was invited to a large flat party, and while it sounded lovely, crowded social events always leave me feeling completely drained.
217
Oh, well, that doesn't sound like much fun.
218
What do you kind of like to do instead of that?
219
I do like being social, but sometimes I like to stay home to recharge my batteries
220
or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates instead.
221
I do like being social, but sometimes I like to stay home to recharge my batteries
222
or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates instead.
223
So we've talked about this in previous episodes.
224
So far, I've talked about how I don't like big groups.
225
I don't like crowded social events.
226
So it sounds like I don't like going out.
227
I don't like going to parties.
228
And that's not true.
229
And I want to show you that that's not true.
230
So I do, wait, wait, hold on, before you think badly of me, I do like being social.
231
If you want to stress a sort of contrast to what you've said before that might contradict what you've been saying,
232
put do and stress and emphasize it before the verb.
233
So I do like being social.
234
I do like parties.
235
I do leave the house sometimes.
236
So I'm trying to, I don't want you to think badly.
237
I do like being social.
238
Being social is going to social events, whether small or big.
239
Going out to public places like bars, cafes, and meeting friends is being social.
240
That's the activity.
241
So I do like being social, but sometimes I like to stay home to recharge my batteries or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates.
242
Recharge my batteries.
243
You can talk about your social batteries.
244
Maybe you are socialed out and you are drained and tired and you need to recharge your batteries.
245
You need a break, some time alone, some quiet time, and your energy, your social energy will come back.
246
So I like to just stay home to recharge my batteries or hang out with a close knit group of mates.
247
Mates are friends and a close knit group.
248
If you know knitting where you take a needle and a thread and you can make socks and jumpers and little hats,
249
you're taking the two threads and putting them very close together.
250
And a close knit group of friends are really close friends.
251
Maybe you've known each other for a long time.
252
Maybe you've been through a lot of experiences together and you know everything about each other.
253
That is a close knit group of mates.
254
And for many people, that's enough.
255
They don't need a big room full of new faces and new people.
256
Some are very, very content with the same two or three people for most of most of their lives.
257
That's a close -knit group of mates.
258
So I do like being social, but sometimes I like to stay home to recharge my batteries
259
or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates instead.
260
Okay, so we'll go back through my site one more time as a conversation.
261
Oh, Mark, do you enjoy being the center of attention or do you prefer your own company?
262
I'm definitely someone who values my alone time.
263
oh why is that uh that's just my nature i find big groups a little bit overwhelming
264
oh wow yeah has
265
that kind of happened recently a few days ago i was invited to a large flat party
266
and while sounded lovely crowded social events always leave me feeling completely drained
267
oh well what do you like to do instead i do like being social
268
but sometimes i like to stay home to recharge my batteries
269
or just hang out with a close -knit group of mates instead okay
270
so today you heard lots of different ways to talk about introverts extroverts
271
and managing your social energy so let's think about your own life are you naturally outgoing
272
and comfortable in social situations or do you prefer to keep to yourself
273
and recharge your batteries yeah or do you love being around people, then Suddenly you feel completely socialed out and you need some alone time to yourself.

इस पाठ के बारे में

आप "Daily English Podcast: Are you an Introvert or an Extrovert?"
