Climbing Mount Everest.
3
Have you ever thought about taking a risk for the fun or excitement of it?
4
Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, has always been a symbol of man's greatest challenge.
5
Located between China and Nepal, Mount Everest has attracted mountain climbers from all over the world.
6
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and his Nepalese guide, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, were the first to reach the top.
7
Since then, about 4,000 people have reached the summit.
8
But more than 200 climbers have died while trying.
9
Between 1953 and 1963, only six people successfully climbed to the top.
10
But things have changed a lot in recent years.
11
In 2012 alone, 500 people made it to the top.
12
What has changed?
13
Why has the number of climbers increased so much recently?
14
One reason is that there are more companies leading expeditions.
15
Now, 90% of climbers use expedition companies.
16
A climber pays about $100,000 to go up the mountain with a guide.
17
But these guided expeditions have attracted a lot of inexperienced climbers, and the crowds have made it even more dangerous to make the climb.
18
Danuru Sherpa, who has led 14 expeditions, has had to carry at least five people off the mountain to save their lives.
19
The expedition companies might want to consider limiting the number of inexperienced climbers,
20
both to protect people and to protect the mountain.
21
Technology has come to Everest, too.
22
As a result, more accurate information about weather conditions at the summit has made
23
it easier for expeditions to choose the safest time to make it to the top.
24
How has all this traffic affected Mount Everest?
25
Lately, the mountain has become dirty as climbers leave behind garbage and equipment they no longer need.
26
There is now a pollution control committee and conditions have started to improve at the base camp,
27
but higher on the mountain the garbage accumulates.
28
One organization, Eco Everest Expedition, has tried to clean up the garbage.
29
The members started in 2008 and so far they've collected over 13 tons of garbage.
30
According to climber Mark Jenkins, it's not simply about reaching the summit, but about showing respect for the mountain and enjoying the journey.
