1
Hi, I'm Siobhan Miller.
2
I'm the founder of The Positive Birth Company.
3
I'm a hypnobirthing teacher and also a mum of three,
4
and I am on a mission to make hypnobirthing more accessible for everyone.
5
Right now, I'm going to tell you about breathing.
6
In hypnobirthing, we talk about two stages of labour,
7
the upstage and the downstage.
8
In the upstage of labour,
9
that's where your uterus muscles are drawing up and your cervix is softening, dilating and opening.
10
That's usually the longer stage of labour.
11
And then the second stage is the down stage.
12
That's where the uterus muscles start to move in the opposite direction
13
and push your baby down the birth canal and out so that they're born.
14
So with that in mind,
15
we have two breathing techniques,
16
up breathing and down breathing.
17
Up breathing for the up stage and down breathing for the down stage.
18
And in this video, I'm going to talk you through up breathing.
19
Now, when I say breathing is a game changer, I absolutely mean it.
20
If you take one thing with you into birth,
21
I recommend you take breathing.
22
You always got your breath with you.
23
So you don't need to remember to pack anything special.
24
You don't need to remember to buy anything.
25
It's free.
26
It's easy.
27
And it's hugely effective.
28
Okay, so bear with me.
29
This is how to do up breathing.
30
You simply need to breathe in for a count of four through your nose
31
and then breathe out for a count of eight through your mouth.
32
So when you inhale through your nose I want you to think about drawing that air in,
33
feeling your chest expand and filling your lungs with air
34
and then as you exhale through your mouth slowly letting the air out feeling everything soften
35
and relax as you do so and then i want you to repeat
36
that four times so in for four inhale expand out for eight exhale relax four times over
37
that actually is 48 seconds so this is a less than a minute of work okay
38
so i'm going to count for you
39
and we're going to do it together okay now you might
40
like to close your eyes to help you relax I find
41
that helps but if you don't want to do that that's absolutely fine.
42
Okay so we're going to start by breathing in through our nose for four out through our mouth for eight
43
and I'm going to count it four times okay ready
44
right in two three four out two
45
three four five six seven eight in
46
two three four out two three four five six seven eight.
47
In two three four out two three four four, five, six, seven, eight.
48
In, two, three, four, out,
49
two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
50
Hopefully you feel a little bit more lighter,
51
grounded and relaxed after doing that and that's just 48 seconds
52
and you know what's really magical about that is that
53
when you're in established labour your surges
54
or contractions will typically last around 45 seconds to a minute
55
so if you close your eyes and commit to that breath
56
and breathe in for four out for eight four times over by the time you open your eyes
57
and you've done that breathing pattern your surge
58
or contraction will have finished completely or it will just be easing off
59
so you can literally ride that wave by committing to your breath not only
60
that but this breathing technique actually works by down downregulating your nervous system.
61
And what that means is it will slow your heart rate down and reduce the amount of adrenaline that you're producing.
62
So it will help you to not only feel better
63
but enable your muscles in your body to work more effectively as well,
64
making labour quicker, easier and more straightforward.
65
I told you it was a game changer.
66
So in for four, out for eight, four times over.
67
And if you struggle to breathe out for eight,
68
you can always modify that.
69
So for example, you could breathe in for three and out for six.
70
Anyway is fine as long as you keep breathing and you try to ensure that your exhale is longer than your inhale.
71
Because if you think about panic breathing or hyperventilating,
72
your exhale gets shorter and shorter and shorter.
73
And we want to make sure that doesn't happen.
74
We want to achieve the opposite of that.
75
So we want to make sure that exhale is nice and long.
76
So whether you do in for three,
77
out for six, in for four,
78
out for eight, it doesn't matter.
79
Find a way that works for you.
80
But honestly, it sounds simple and it is simple and it will absolutely make your birth better.
