1
The iPhone 18 Pro looks almost identical to the 17 Pro, but what Apple failed to mention is that these are the heaviest iPhones they've ever made, so there's definitely some changes inside.
2
We know they've made the dynamic island smaller, moved the chips around, and Apple says battery life is substantially better.
3
But is there anything else they didn't mention?
4
And as a repair technician, I'm curious, is a camera like this even repairable?
5
Let's find out.
6
And here it is, the iPhone 18 Pro Max Black.
7
The color match back glass this year actually looks very very nice
8
and yes You can tell that the dynamic island is
9
so much smaller But what I didn't mention earlier is
10
that I want to actually test parts from here on the iPhone 17 Pro Max
11
because I think This back glass would look absolutely amazing on this orange.
12
We're gonna find out if that works But first let's uh, let's open this guy up.
13
We'll go ahead and cook the iPhone 18 Pro Max I actually noticed
14
that all the dimensions on Apple's site make this seem like
15
this is the same exact size as the iPhone 17 Pro But when you overlap the product images, you can see that the camera bumps got bigger It's probably
16
because of the new variable aperture But nobody really likes a bigger camera bump
17
and Apple just keeps making them bigger and bigger We'll put on some gloves
18
because I don't want this to get all dusty I do
19
want to give a special shout out to connect it for
20
helping us get the phone We always have trouble buying these phones, especially in my city, and they make sure that we have it as soon as it's released.
21
So check them out in the description.
22
First things first, we're obviously going to hit the iPhone 18 Pro Max with an unscrew.
23
Apple never changes the screw design.
24
It's always two pentalobe screws at the bottom.
25
If you're ever wondering where the model number is on an iPhone, well, you have to look pretty hard.
26
It's actually inside the charging port, and this year's model number is A3716.
27
We'll grab our clamp.
28
I'm actually very happy that Apple has continued this design with the little glass window here
29
because it makes replacements a lot easier and a lot cheaper.
30
We're starting off with this little back window here
31
because last year it didn't really lead you to anything other than the wireless charger.
32
Let's see if that's changed this year.
33
The back glass this year is made of ceramic shield, which is the same as last year.
34
That's not ceramic shield 2 like the front screen, but it's still pretty durable.
35
Now we can go ahead and open it up.
36
Check out that battery.
37
It's got a little bit of a shine to it, meaning it might be metal encased, but we'll find that out later.
38
The actual wireless charger itself is surrounded by a bunch of thermal pads, which is pretty normal.
39
We have the MagSafe magnets here, the wireless charger, which actually charges at 25 watts this year, the same as last year, and we have the little connector here.
40
We'll see if that connector is the same as the 17 Pro Max in a bit, but let's get this guy off.
41
I was about to change the back glass but I noticed a few things that are actually pretty different.
42
So the 17 Pro Max just had this circle cut out
43
with another little cut out here for the MagSafe magnets
44
while the 18 Pro Max just has a big one
45
and this over here is an antenna but the 18 Pro Max lacks that.
46
Also the battery on this guy is taller than the 17 Pro Max.
47
This video is sponsored by Subcase and their new UB grip case for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
48
The whole idea The idea is basically three things in one.
49
You get protection, MagSafe, and a kickstand.
50
Speaking of the kickstand, the whole thing is made of aluminum and you can use it vertically, horizontally, so whether you're watching something, taking a call, or leaving your phone on your desk,
51
you don't need another stand.
52
It also doubles as a ring grip.
53
It has built -in N52 magnets with up to 1800 grams of holding force, so it works very well with MagSafe chargers and accessories.
54
You get full camera control functionality plus texturized sides so it's actually comfortable to hold.
55
And since this is a sub case they obviously went pretty hard on protection too.
56
Like reinforced corners, raised camera bumps, a flap for the charging port, raised edges around the screen and they rated for up to 15 feet of drop protection.
57
So if you want one case
58
that basically handles everything check out sub case UB grip for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max using the link below.
59
While you guys are watching
60
that ad I actually did connect the 18 Pro Max back glass to the 17 Pro Max
61
and surprisingly it does fit but the orientation is off and you really have to squish it in.
62
Also I tested it out and the phone boot loops every three minutes so this isn't really feasible.
63
Technically you could just take the wireless charger
64
and the MagSafe magnets install it on here and then install it on your 17 Pro Max.
65
Let's see how it looks though because I think this combination will be absolutely beautiful.
66
Check that out.
67
That's just one part that's transferable between these two iPhones, but what's transferable on this side?
68
The screen this year is a 6 .9 inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but what's interesting to me this year isn't what's on the screen, it's actually what's behind it.
69
Oooooopen it up.
70
And that is the inside of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
71
I have a lot to say about this, but let me get the screen off and we'll focus on that first.
72
And just like that, we can remove the iPhone 18 Pro Max's display.
73
With the screen removed and the iPhone 17 Pro Max screen right beside it here, the differences are pretty clear.
74
So obviously we have the front camera glass over here, we have where the dot projector goes,
75
and then we have the infrared camera all the way in the corner here on the 18 Pro Max.
76
It's actually now an under display infrared camera, something that I don't think anyone's done before in a phone.
77
It's kind of crazy to me that Apple's first under -display camera is for Face ID.
78
Something you can't see is what Apple's calling an industry first nano twin copper material
79
that more effectively moves heat away from the display while providing strength.
80
Now it's time to talk about the elephant in the room this.
81
The iPhone used to be beautiful and now when you open it this is what you see.
82
Unscrewing this metal plate absolutely sucks.
83
There's so many screws and it's a whole new screw type that Apple never used to use.
84
The metal plate that I'm talking about is actually the vapor chamber
85
and I can confirm it is way bigger than last year's.
86
14 screws later we can finally lift up the vapor chamber which is also attached to the battery.
87
Same design as last year but now I can finally confirm that it is metal encased which is different.
88
The thing is though I want to see if this battery is bigger
89
because Apple has some pretty bold claims for battery life on this device.
90
Partly because obviously they moved the CPU over here on the motherboard, but we're gonna get to all that later.
91
Let's uh, let's get this battery removed from the vapor chamber first.
92
And thanks to Apple's electrically activated adhesive, we could just pull up the battery,
93
flip it around, and over here we have 5567 milliamp hours,
94
which is actually a decent jump from the iPhone 17 Pro Max battery, which said 5088 milliamp hours.
95
So we don't just have the silicon efficiencies to thank, we also have an increased battery capacity.
96
The flex cable coming out of this battery looks a lot different than it did on the previous model.
97
All these cables are probably to help with the new fast charging, but if we look at the connectors, I don't think we'll be able to swap these batteries.
98
We're going to be covering everything up here, including the motherboard and then that camera, which I am going to be taking apart,
99
but I need to see if the charging port is as hard to remove as last year's because that was not fun.
100
Apple says the phone can reach around 50 % in just 15 minutes versus around 20 before.
101
To do that though you need the right adapter.
102
One that's 60 watts or higher with adjustable voltage supply.
103
It doesn't mean the phone is going to pull 60 watts the whole time but it'll pull it when it needs it.
104
And there we go the charging port is removed.
105
One thing I do like about this is
106
that the speaker has no adhesive so that just can come right out and And also, the microphone down here has its own connector,
107
so you don't have to replace the entire charging port if this microphone dies.
108
What I don't like though, is this.
109
There's so many screws on this charging port.
110
I think there's a little bit less than the 17 Pro Max, but way too much work just to replace something that's going to fail at one point or another.
111
A lot of the performance and battery increases this year are thanks to one thing, this.
112
It's the A20 Pro chip, and Apple typically puts this chip in between their boards, but they've surfaced it to the top.
113
Not only that they've also shifted the RAM beside it instead of stacking it.
114
There's also this thermal pad on top
115
which makes contact with the larger vapor chamber which is also cooled by the nano twin copper in the display.
116
There's a lot going on here.
117
We'll disconnect these four flex cables and now we can remove the front camera.
118
They haven't really made any changes to the actual camera itself.
119
It's still the 18 megapixel center stage camera but obviously the layout of things is very different.
120
I'll disconnect everything so we can get the motherboard out of the way so that we can look at those cameras.
121
I actually did have to remove the rear camera
122
because there's a connector running right under it which is kind of annoying for repairability.
123
But on the motherboard itself we discussed where the A20 Pro chip has relocated to.
124
We didn't discuss what moved so that it could be here.
125
That's the storage.
126
The storage is now inside the sandwich board so
127
if you ever wanted to upgrade your phone's storage
128
which I bet you didn't even know you can do but you can it's gonna be a lot harder.
129
On the back of the board we have the Wi -Fi
130
and Bluetooth chip with all the other chips being hidden under metal plate or in between the board.
131
We also have an empty ball grid array over here which I'm not used to seeing on iPhones.
132
Now it's time for the moment I've been most excited for, the cameras.
133
This year everyone was pretty hyped about the main camera with variable aperture
134
which is the bottom camera here but Apple actually isn't the first to do this.
135
Samsung did it way back on the Galaxy S9 but
136
but theirs was actually a two step aperture that switched between f1 .5 and f2 .4.
137
The iPhone 18 Pro actually uses 6 physical aperture blades with
138
4 selectable settings ranging from f1 .48 all the way to f4.
139
Let's see if we can get a closer look.
140
To do this we're going to need a machine like this because even though the cameras look like they're one solid piece, they can actually be separated.
141
Basically this helps to soften the very tough adhesive on the back of the camera.
142
It's a bit hard to see, but it's this black stuff between the seams.
143
Interestingly enough, Apple has actually released the repair cost for the rear camera of the 18 Pro Max, and it's the same as the 17 Pro Max.
144
The camera is all sold as one module, so in terms of repairability, it seems about the same as usual.
145
But while I was finally getting that camera lifted up, I had an idea.
146
See, if we take a magnet and place it really close to the camera, boom, that looks insane.
147
The fact that it's moving with my magnet suggests Apple's using a tiny electromagnetic motor to move these blades.
148
Basically, electricity runs through a little coil of wire creating a magnetic field.
149
That field acts on a magnet connected to a rotating mechanism and that small rotation moves all six blades together.
150
Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is decently repairable and got some pretty major internal upgrades.
151
The variable aperture is also very cool and yes, it does still work but I hate the internal redesign of this phone and last year's phone.
152
It doesn't look good anymore.
153
The iPhone used to look so good on the inside, but Apple kind of ruined that.
154
And with tech getting more expensive, even the iPhone got a price hike.
155
There's more of a reason than ever to hold on to your older devices than buying a new one.
156
Anyway, guys, I really hope you enjoyed this video.
157
Drop a like, subscribe, hit that bell button, and I will see you in the next one.
