1
Are you learning English?
2
If you are then this is the video for you.
3
Today you are going to learn English through comprehensible input where you watch,
4
you listen and you learn new English vocabulary.
5
As you can see today we are in London
6
and we are going to be showing you guys the top five attractions that you cannot miss here in the city.
7
If you guys enjoy these comprehensive input videos you can find many many more of them at our website www.englishsponge.com
8
Trust me a lot of exclusive and original content that you cannot see anywhere else.
9
Now let's get into the video.
10
So here behind me and hopefully as you can see with the chime of the bell we are looking at Big Ben,
11
the Houses of Parliament.
12
This is where the British government sit and make all of their decisions.
13
As you can see it is an absolutely stunning building,
14
really beautiful gothic design similar to lots of churches and other traditional buildings here in the UK.
15
It's truly magnificent and world famous.
16
People from all around the world come to London
17
and for many of them the first place they go is
18
to see the big clock tower big ben really special great piece of architecture
19
and a wonderful thing to have in our city what i'll say for sure
20
if you come to london you can't miss this one now big ben is really really cool
21
but wait until we look at the second attraction It's going to blow you guys away.
22
So as we're walking over to location number two, I thought I would explain to you guys this little wall here.
23
As you can see, this wall is decorated with lots of red love hearts.
24
Lots of red love hearts with people's names written on them.
25
This wall is a memorial.
26
It's a memorial for every single person here in the United Kingdom who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
27
Every single heart is an individual person who unfortunately died.
28
I think it's a really lovely way to commemorate those who we lost.
29
It's a really nice thing that we've done to make sure these people stay in our memories.
30
Nice?
31
Well, let's move on to the next part.
32
so behind me we have the London Eye now I'm gonna be honest do not spend your money
33
and go on this thing it's really not worth it like it's really expensive it's really really expensive
34
and if you want like a great view of London I recommend going to the Shard
35
and going up to the top of the Shard It might be a little bit more expensive, but it is much better than this thing.
36
I'm going to be honest with you.
37
So this was actually called the Millennium Eye at one point.
38
It was meant to be temporary, but after they installed it here, the public enjoyed it so much.
39
It brought in so much money through tourism that they decided to make it a permanent feature.
40
so now the London Eye is synonymous with London whenever you
41
see a picture of London whenever you see videos of this
42
place you'll always see the London Eye in one of them like I said
43
if you really want to go
44
and give it a try I probably recommend booking in advance queues on the day are really long
45
and tickets can get really expensive so plan ahead if you want to do it
46
but my recommendation skip this one go to the Chardonstad
47
cool
48
that is attraction number two let's go to number three where
49
you'll see one of my favorite spots here in London maybe an English winner yeah 250 jets in kilometers I'm gonna say...
50
9.. wow we have a winner congratulations Sam You're a winner.
51
How does it feel to be a winner?
52
This may be the single greatest moment of my life.
53
So, it is really, really busy here in London today, guys.
54
As you can see, it's only, what, 10 a.m., 10.30, I think, yet the streets are already really, really crowded.
55
Full of tourists.
56
Oh, I've just stepped on a branch.
57
Yeah, absolutely full of tourists.
58
We're currently in the start of December so this is one of the peak tourist seasons here in London.
59
People love to come to the city to try and see the Christmas lights to see all the sights.
60
London during winter is really romanticized as somebody from here I don't really see it.
61
It is usually just a bit gray a bit moody a bit dark
62
but you know if tourists want to come here spend the money in my city.
63
Why not go for it?
64
I mean I understand everyone has different dreams.
65
Some people dream to come to London.
66
I dream to leave.
67
We are quite blessed today because even though it's December and London is notorious for being very rainy,
68
very cold, it's actually quite a beautiful day today.
69
I mean, the sun is shining, it's relatively warm by winter standards, climate change is doing something, we can say.
70
So yeah, I'm quite happy in all honesty.
71
I'm not sure if you guys saw the Reading vlog a few weeks ago, but it is much, much nicer than
72
that day here in the UK we very rarely get sun
73
so when we so when we do get it you have to appreciate it
74
and you have to be happy about it most importantly
75
so guys here we have a
76
famous red telephone box now ever since the invention of the
77
mobile telephone these things are completely useless in fact now they're only really used by tourists to take pictures
78
and by people to do some not
79
so nice things during the night time for example look really really old telephone i don't think anyone has used
80
that phone to make a call in at least 15 years
81
and then look at the ground dirty full of you know
82
cracked empty beer cans um overall you know not quite as glamorous as the movies
83
and the tv shows would make you think as a tourist
84
it's such a cool city like i really do understand why people come to london
85
and like love living here
86
and love visiting here um most locals most people who live in
87
or around the london area we really don't come to this part of london all that often
88
because you we've seen all of these things before we've driven past them a hundred times in the car
89
so sometimes it is really nice to do things like this to come back to these parts of the city
90
and almost be a tourist for the day it really shows you a city and a completely different perspective
91
Okay guys, so we're crossing the street.
92
We need to hurry up because the time is almost over.
93
So we're crossing the street and we have just arrived at Embankment Underground Station.
94
Don't worry, this is not the third attraction that I told you guys about.
95
We'll come into that soon.
96
But I thought we'd show you just how amazingly the London Underground works.
97
As you guys have probably heard from this video, I love to complain about things.
98
One thing that works really well in this city is our public transport system.
99
So come with me and we'll show you how it works inside.
100
So we're now on the inside of the station.
101
Greg's!
102
I bigged up Nando's last video, it's all about Greg's.
103
I love this bakery.
104
If you ever want a lukewarm sausage roll
105
that you feel like you've paid too much money for this
106
is the place to go i told you guys about nando's
107
already now it's greg's a second true british staple a true
108
piece of british heritage right here here we are in the
109
station as you can see it's pretty busy we're here on a saturday
110
so there are lots of people in front of us we
111
have the barriers to go through the barriers you need to either tap your Oyster card
112
or your credit card the barriers will open up and you walk straight through onto the platforms.
113
Tap my card and walk through the barriers.
114
So come with me we're now through the barriers and we are inside of the station.
115
Here we have the two routes that we can go on.
116
The yellow line is the The yellow line is the circle line.
117
It's called that because, surprise, surprise, it goes in a circle.
118
And the green line is the district line.
119
Each one of these is a different station.
120
And a station with a circle on it has a connection.
121
So you can get off the London Underground and get on to our national rail services.
122
We are currently... Where are we?
123
We are currently at Embankment and we are going to be going to...
124
I don't know, I don't know.
125
Where are we?
126
I don't know, I don't know, I can't remember.
127
Give me one second.
128
We are currently here at Embankment and we have to go one,
129
two, three, three stops and we arrive at Mansion House where we'll go to our third attraction of the day.
130
Let's go.
131
Really small station.
132
And as you can see, busy.
133
Excellent, our train is arriving.
134
Oh, the train is packed.
135
The train is absolutely packed.
136
Oh it's so busy, this gives me anxiety.
137
I hate London in winter because there are thousands of tourists.
138
So this is our public transport system here in London people are very very respectful of each other
139
so we're going to try and not be too loud
140
but this is what our public transport looks like we have
141
some advertisements up the top some maps showing you where you need to go
142
and we have just arrived at the next station.
143
We're going to stop recording now because there are lots of people here but we'll see you at the next place.
144
So right now we are on the train and we're about to get off the train.
145
We're getting off the train and onto the platform.
146
Onto the platform at Mansion house station.
147
The doors slide open and we mind the gap as we step onto the platform.
148
You see the big sign up there that says way out and a clock that I believe is telling the wrong time.
149
Our clocks went back, nope our clocks went forward about a month ago now here in the UK,
150
yet they still haven't changed the time on the platform i'm not surprised in all honesty
151
yeah
152
that was the london underground experience for you guys i have
153
to say i've tried lots of metro systems around the world
154
and i haven't found one
155
that can quite compete with the london underground yet both in how big it is how many connections it has
156
and just overall how iconic it really is
157
and then once again we are going to tap through the barriers
158
so we're going to use our credit card or our ticket
159
and tap through the barrier to let us out i don't
160
really know what to say other than this is a cool little street um
161
when you're in central london especially more towards like the Soho
162
area like this you'll find lots of these small little streets with
163
pigeons of course uh eating going to town on some leftover
164
pizza lovely um yeah you'll find lots of really nice restaurants bars
165
and if you look up there the old Watling that is a sign to a pub
166
very very big part of British culture going to the pub of course
167
so if you're in London make sure you stop by grab a bite to eat
168
and most importantly grab a pint of beer let's go
169
so we are stood here in front of St Paul's Cathedral
170
now I said this was one of my favorite attractions here in London because of how stunning the architecture is.
171
If you are a fan of architecture, especially traditional sort of neoclassical architecture, this building is absolutely stunning.
172
Of course you have the most typical columns, the use of white marble, all stuff that reminds you of ancient Rome, ancient Greece.
173
There's a clock over on the right side there the tops are encrusted in gold truly truly luxurious and amazing
174
an amazingly designed building yeah really impressive this is probably not the best angle of it
175
if you see this building from further away you can see
176
all of it including the dome on the roof honestly a truly truly fantastic building
177
if you're a lover of architecture or someone who
178
is religiously inclined I would definitely definitely recommend checking simple simple's Cathedral out
179
and taking a tour inside as well the outside is stunning
180
but the inside is truly majestic here in front of the
181
Cathedral we have a statue of who I believe to be Queen Victoria former Queen of Britain the United Kingdom
182
and the British Empire Queen Victoria Empress of India
183
if I'm not mistaken but i may be so don't quote me on
184
that so what we're showing you now is very customary here in the uk especially in london
185
when you stand on an escalator you have to stand on the right side of it
186
if you stand on the left side of it you're going
187
to block the people trying to walk out walk down
188
and they are going to get very angry with you so
189
when you're here in london always stand on the right side
190
of the escalator unfortunately we just missed our train guys and
191
that means we're gonna have to wait an entire minute for
192
the next one london man they need to sort these trains out
193
so here we have the map of the london underground now
194
i promise you somewhere in this confusion it will start to make sense it's actually really really well designed
195
and really really well planned out once you know where you're going
196
but here you can see all of the different underground lines we have here
197
and overground lines
198
and just think this does not even include buses London Underground truly one of the best networks in the world
199
Please donate to UKKG HelpSelter
200
Because they're really putting in the work out here We'll leave their charity
201
if we can find it in the bio or in the description Go donate to me guys, 100%
202
It appears we have a lot of people dressed up in Santa costumes
203
My assumption is some sort of university pub crawl Whatever they're doing it will involve alcohol.
204
This is the UK.
205
Hello, so I'm joined here with How are you doing today?
206
I'm doing absolutely fantastic Fantastic.
207
So of course you are dressed like Santa Claus or as we say Father Christmas here in the UK.
208
Can you just explain to the lovely people what you are doing today?
209
Well today we're doing a pub crawl as you can see there's heaps of Santa Clauses or Father Christmases.
210
And we're just gonna go around this area and kind of drink to our hearts desire.
211
Fantastic and what is your drink of choice?
212
Oh, that's a good question.
213
I'm gonna say beer.
214
It's just like an all-rounder.
215
Okay, thank you so much.
216
Do you have an Instagram, anything like that that you'd like to plug right now?
217
Yeah, I have an Instagram, it's avalon.cousins, so A-V-A-L-O-N dot C-O-U-S-I-N-S, and that's me.
218
Excellent, we'll put it on screen now for you guys to check her out.
219
Thank you, nice to meet you.
220
Cheers.
221
So, behind me, you can see the famous Tower of London.
222
Now, this might be my favourite attraction here in London.
223
So much history, such beautiful architecture, so much amazing incredible things happened behind those walls.
224
The Tower of London is particularly famous because two of Henry VIII's wives were imprisoned and executed behind those walls.
225
If you are looking for something to do here in London this is a big big recommendation.
226
Take the tour, I did it once when I was much younger and it was fantastic.
227
I had an absolutely amazing day.
228
If you're someone who loves history, loves learning and loves learning a bit about the local history when you're in a new city, go check out the Tower of London.
229
Definitely, definitely worth it in my humble opinion.
230
And in the distance behind us we have this big pointy glass building.
231
This building is known as the Shard and it is the tallest building in Europe.
232
Yes, England is number one in something finally.
233
So yeah, everyone's in the festive spirit.
234
It is starting to rain.
235
It's getting a lot more grey and overcast and very windy, as you can see from my hair.
236
But people are in a really good mood today.
237
It's Saturday, it's almost Christmas.
238
It's a good day.
239
so it is super super busy
240
but we have arrived at the final landmark of the video
241
so if you watched this far thank you
242
so much for watching guys we are walking across the world famous tower bridge
243
so iconic i mean there's not much i really need to tell you about this bridge
244
and as you can see by the sheer number of people walking across it a very big tourist hotspot here in London.
245
Come with us as we keep walking across the bridge.
246
If you do come to visit London
247
and you do decide to visit Tower Bridge make sure to be careful of your belongings on here.
248
I know quite a few people who have been pickpocketed.
249
They've had their phones, their wallets stolen by people
250
without even realizing it as you can see this bridge gets
251
super super busy especially during peak tourist season like right now
252
but i understand why because this is an absolutely stunningly designed bridge i mean look at
253
that in front of us with the amazing amazing architecture stonework
254
very very ecclesiastical I would say which means related to the church it really gives
255
that feeling that impression
256
that we're in a church with the architecture here we are
257
walking over the River Thames you see the battleship HMS Belfast
258
in the distance that's another big recommendation for you guys
259
if you're visiting London that battleship is now a museum
260
so you can go see what it was like to be a Royal Navy soldier during World War 2
261
and here over the top of the Tower of London you
262
can see the modern architecture we have lots of skyscrapers lots
263
and lots of glass some interesting looking buildings the one furthest to the left is definitely strange
264
and on the right side we have a building
265
that looks like a bullet we call
266
that the gherkin another really famous piece of modern architecture here in london
267
so there you have it guys those were the five attractions
268
that i think you can't miss if you come here to the uk i really really hope you've enjoyed today's video
269
Of course, if you have, like the video, comment down below what new words you learn in this video.
