1
Hello everybody!
2
If you are trying to learn some English then go no further because this is the video for you.
3
In today's video you are going to learn English through comprehensible input.
4
Very simple, you watch, you listen and you learn English vocabulary.
5
Today we are in the small English town of Windsor and and there is a building behind us.
6
I wonder who lives there?
7
Anyways, if you like comprehensible input and you want to see some more of these videos,
8
make sure to check out www.englishsponge.com where you can find lots of exclusive and original content in English at your level.
9
So, let's get into the video.
10
So, Windsor is a very historic old English town.
11
Of course, we have the famous Windsor Castle behind us, one of the primary residencies of the British royal family.
12
But, as you guys know, not their biggest fan.
13
So, that's enough Windsor Castle for me for one day.
14
Let's take a walk down this nice cobbled street
15
when you see stones in the floor like this we call it a cobbled street
16
and hanging up on the top of the street are some great british flags unfortunately these flags are torn
17
and tattered that's not exactly uh the best message to be showing people especially right outside your castle
18
if you continue walking down we have a taurus shop known as windsor's gifts
19
and souvenirs and quite possibly the worst flag i've ever seen in my life in fact
20
a lot of hatred is filled in my heart right now so yeah let's keep going
21
so here at the Torah shop there are a lot of
22
different items for sale first we have some scars to keep
23
your neck warm in the cold British winter we have some
24
souvenirs some stuffed toys these are little bears dressed like the king's guard and they will cost you 10 pounds each
25
Here we go here, we have some fridge magnets.
26
This one is with the late Princess Diana.
27
Some more featuring the castle.
28
And some looking at...
29
Why does that say London?
30
We are not in London, guys.
31
In fact, this is a completely different county.
32
Yeah, I guess it doesn't matter.
33
Taurus won't know.
34
Now you do.
35
Moving on, we have some more stuffed animals of...
36
yeah stuffed animals some jumpers a little tote bag have some umbrellas these are very very useful
37
if you come to england
38
because it rains a lot some more fridge magnets with family
39
crests family insinnias i guess we would call them a bit
40
odd it's my family name on there no it is not i'm clearly not popular enough
41
and finally some postcards some postcards
42
so you can send your loved ones pictures of the dead queen what a depressing postcard
43
that is nice let's move on
44
my mum went to London and all I got was this lousy t-shirt well
45
if your mum bought you this t-shirt she didn't go to London so there are two lies here
46
it's basically London though Well basically isn't London.
47
That's like saying James you're basically a fish.
48
You have two eyes and a mouth.
49
That is not the same thing.
50
In what way is it not the same thing?
51
There's a very nice public space here.
52
I would call this a little square but it's called Church Street Gardens.
53
Once again, not in London.
54
We have William the Conqueror, you know, back 1066, Battle of Hastings.
55
Apparently, he founded Windsor Castle.
56
I live 10 minutes away here, and I did not know that.
57
Henry VIII, he was famous for murdering lots of his wives.
58
Yeah, nice.
59
Some really nice coat of arms.
60
These things here are coats of arms.
61
This here is a lion, I guess, even though it looks...
62
No, that's just dirty.
63
Okay, it is a lion.
64
I thought he was breathing fire.
65
And here, with Henry III, you have perhaps one of the most typical British symbols, the three lions.
66
That is the same symbol that our national football team use.
67
Lucky us.
68
So, you guys probably can't tell from the sun, but it's absolutely freezing in England at the moment.
69
It took me about 15 minutes to de-ice my car.
70
My car was covered in frost and ice this morning so I had to get a scraper and scrape it all off.
71
It was horrible.
72
My hands are turning to ice.
73
It's really not nice today.
74
okay continuing on we have some nice neoclassical architecture here neoclassical architecture is the architecture
75
that reminds you of ancient greece
76
and rome it's very popular here in europe especially here in
77
london you see we have these columns these big archways
78
and there is a big statue up the top now I'm not going to pretend
79
that I know who
80
that is it's really nicely designed I can give some credit
81
where credit is due the architecture around this part is really really lovely
82
so guys we are stood in front of a traditional British fish
83
and chip shop now these takeaways these fast-food restaurants are probably
84
our most typical our most traditional like I said here in Britain.
85
However unfortunately we really don't see that many anymore.
86
These serve very typical British food.
87
Fried fish, fried sausages, anything covered in batter and deep fat fried you can probably find it here.
88
And in some places especially in Scotland
89
and up in the north of britain they even do deep
90
fried mars bars yes you heard me right they take a normal mars chocolate bar cover it in batter
91
and deep fry it like it's a piece of kfc um
92
i have tried it once i will say it is nice it's not the sort of taste
93
or texture profile you would expect
94
but it is really really nice I would try it again
95
um yeah like I said unfortunately these institutions are dying out due to rising costs
96
and now all we really see are new American brands arriving
97
on the uh on the UK streets especially in terms of fast food
98
so if you do come to England
99
and you want to try out some traditional local food I really highly recommend coming to a chippy Do not sit down, it is not a sit-down restaurant.
100
Take it back to your hotel,
101
take it to a park bench or something and eat it there. So the owner has...
102
Can I say something?
103
Yeah of course you can.
104
So this fish and chips is 14 years here.
105
How are you guys?
106
You alright?
107
This fish and chips is 14 years in this place in Windsor.
108
And this Cabal Donut that you see is just 2 days ago we started.
109
We're trying to do some late business for them.
110
The people when they leave the pubs they have nothing to eat.
111
Because we close it at 10 o'clock.
112
Now we stay until 11, 12, maybe 1 o'clock.
113
And we do really nice fish and chips.
114
You need to come to try it.
115
I'm serious, I'm not trying to sell off.
116
It's really good fish and chips.
117
I swear to God.
118
That's it, if you've got something else to say.
119
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
120
If you're in Windsor, make sure to come down to Chippy of Windsor Fish and Chips.
121
If you have a look at the price, as a local, I can say these are really good and competitive prices and they come with a drink included as well.
122
So this looks like a lovely traditional fish and chip shop, you'll get lots of great food here.
123
Cheers, thank you mate, appreciate it.
124
Okay, so we're at the crossing and I'm pushing the button so we can cross the street.
125
Now we have to wait.
126
The lights have turned red.
127
So, as you can see, the green sign is telling us we can cross.
128
The chime went off.
129
Chime, alarm, beep, whatever you want to call it, went off.
130
And we crossed the road safely.
131
England or Britain is not like lots of countries in Europe.
132
you can just cross the road whenever you want just make sure you don't get hit by a car okay
133
and now we have arrived on the high street as you can see this street is a little bit wider
134
and with this barrier here this is a pedestrian only street amazing i know
135
so one of the favorite my favorite things about windsor is
136
the fact it's pedestrian only you can really walk you can take your time
137
and you don't have to worry so much about cars.
138
Hey Liz so how you doing?
139
Excellent excellent.
140
So what do you think the number one way in the world is to learn English?
141
Well funny enough that's exactly what Paddington said as well.
142
He also said you need to watch AJ's whiteboard videos 347 times.
143
Uh huh, uh huh.
144
Mm hmm, okay, bye Les, appreciate it.
145
So as you walk down the high street, we're seeing lots of different shops.
146
Now, like I said before, most of these shops are now chains.
147
We have Starbucks famous American cafe coffee chain on the right hand side.
148
On the left hand side, we have Krispy Kreme coffee and donuts.
149
Now, I will be honest, I do like a Krispy Kreme.
150
I would say a doughnut is really one of my guilty pleasures in life.
151
No matter what, no matter if I'm trying to watch my weight, count my calories, I will always eat a doughnut if possible.
152
We have Franco Manga, which is another...
153
Sorry, Franco Manga.
154
That's probably the worst pronunciation of that name ever.
155
Franco Manga.
156
We have...
157
It's an Italian...
158
Italian.
159
pizza restaurant, another chain I guess.
160
Now we have here a shop named Office.
161
Now these people do not sell office supplies, in fact what they sell are trendy trainers or as the Americans would say sneakers.
162
They sell shoes, it is a shoe store.
163
If we continue walking down we have a Ben and Jerry's shop
164
which sell ice cream and other desserts on the left hand side.
165
Honestly we really don't see very many Ben & Jerry's stores so that is quite unique.
166
It's not the most common thing in the world.
167
Here we have Superdrug which is a common cosmetics chain here in the UK.
168
They sell makeup, they sell body products, they sell all the things that you might want to put on your body.
169
They also have a pharmacy in the back so you can pick up your medicine.
170
Medicine to make sure you don't get sick or medicine to heal you one or the other.
171
Considering it is a Monday and it is 11 o'clock it is still quite busy.
172
We are right at the start of the year
173
so people have just started coming back to work but Windsor is quite a big tourist hotspot.
174
There's definitely lots of people who come here.
175
On the left there is Waterstones, quite a famous bookstore.
176
If you like to read in English, Waterstones is a very good option when you come here.
177
They are probably the best bookstore in the UK.
178
And on the right, up in front here, we have Daniel, which is a department store.
179
Now, a department store is a very special type of shop.
180
It's a shop with lots and lots of little shops inside.
181
Lots of little departments inside.
182
Now, Daniel sells absolutely everything.
183
From clothes, to toys, to sporting equipment, to technology.
184
pretty much anything you want you could probably find it there in Daniel
185
hi um how long till the sausage rolls are done oh
186
fantastic oh what do I get one sausage roll please no that's it excellent
187
Thank you, appreciate it.
188
You are not going to believe this.
189
You're not going to believe the rollercoaster of emotions that I've just been through.
190
So imagine I was waiting in the queue at Greg's, everybody's favourite, and there was one sausage roll left
191
and the entire time I'm thinking come on I've been waiting in the queue five minutes
192
please please no one ordered a sausage roll three people in
193
front of me first two don't get it I'm thinking we
194
might be here okay last person can I please have a
195
sausage roll my heart sank I was defeated in all honesty
196
and just when all hope was lost just
197
when I thought you know I had wasted five minutes of
198
my life they brought out a new batch of sausage rolls
199
so not only did I get the sausage roll that I
200
so desired it is warm it is crispy
201
and I'm a happy man genuinely for those of you who don't know
202
because I imagine this is quite a British thing this is a Greg's sausage roll
203
one of our national dishes I would say this is like like tacos to the Mexicans like same level
204
if we break it up
205
and you see inside there's actually a pastry with some hot
206
pork sausage in the middle now I know this really doesn't look all
207
that appetizing but I promise you it is fantastic so let me give a little taste test Very good crunch.
208
It's very hot in the middle.
209
It has just come out of the oven.
210
As Greg's sausage rolls go, this is as good as it gets guys.
211
I'm giving this a solid 15 out of 10.
212
Incredible.
213
Mind-blowing.
214
Oh, what a go.
215
I'm so happy.
216
I'm literally so happy.
217
So I'm here stood in front of the Piper pub.
218
As you can see, this is a Scottish-themed pub the person on the sign and the name, the person is holding some bagpipes.
219
Bagpipes are the traditional Scottish instrument.
220
They're the instrument that you always hear and always think about when you see representations of Scotland.
221
Now this colour and pattern, it's called tartan, and in Scotland it's very very traditional, very very popular.
222
So you have this tartan sort of pattern here.
223
A little bit of outdoor seating in front of the pub with a nice umbrella
224
but with freezing cold weather like today you're not going to want to sit there.
225
So guys here we are at Windsor and Eton Central Station.
226
If you guys are looking for a very quick day trip
227
that you can do from London I highly highly recommend coming down to Windsor.
228
This is the station you will arrive at.
229
head to Slough on the train change at Slough and then it's just one stop from Slough here to Windsor
230
Windsor is a really beautiful historic old town like I'm sure
231
you see there's a lot of really nice architecture a lot of really pretty spaces around here
232
and of course you have Windsor Castle
233
that you guys saw at the front big model steam train behind me it's very cool no I am personally
234
quite a big fan of trains especially big steam trains like this some of the more old
235
and traditional ones I think they are really really cool
236
and here on the side we have another coat of arms
237
this is quite interesting on the left hand side we have a lion representing England I believe St George
238
and on the right hand side we have a unicorn you might not believe this
239
but the unicorn is actually the national animal of Scotland.
240
Yes, Scotland's national animal is a mythical creature and is a unicorn right there.
241
Really beautiful, excellent little model and I'm really happy that they put it here on the train station.
242
And coming with me, I'm going to quickly show you how these self-service ticket booths work.
243
So you can call this machine a few things.
244
A self-service ticket booth, a ticket machine, something like that.
245
This whole thing is the machine.
246
Here we have the screen showing you the different tickets.
247
So as you can see with these big red crosses through coins
248
and notes this machine is card only you cannot pay using
249
cash the big red crosses mean you cannot use cash card only
250
if you look at here on this touch screen on this touch screen you can choose the different tickets
251
that you might want to buy so
252
if you wanted to go to Twyford on a single
253
that it's just there not the return as well here you
254
have your ticket press here you can pay now here we
255
have the automatic card reader for I don't know this is
256
for your rail card a rail card is something you can buy here in the UK
257
that will get you discounts on tickets
258
this is the contactless card reader and this is for chip
259
and pin so you insert your card into here
260
and put in your pin number you press in your pin number on the buttons
261
when you're finished you press the green button at the bottom enter
262
so yeah at the end your tickets will drop into this little bin here you'll push the door open
263
and collect your tickets that's how this works so thank you guys
