Hi Georgie.
7
Hello Beth.
8
How is your week going?
9
It's going well.
10
It's quite a busy one, isn't it?
11
It is.
12
It's only Wednesday.
13
Yeah.
14
It feels like Friday.
15
But today we're talking about secrets.
16
Secrets.
17
A secret is a piece of information that you don't tell other people.
18
Beth, does that mean you're going to tell me all of your secrets?
19
No. Not now.
20
Maybe later.
21
Ooh, okay.
22
So Georgie, are you good at keeping secrets?
23
No, I'm definitely not good at keeping secrets.
24
I'm a bit of an open book, which means...
25
the opposite of someone who is good at keeping secrets.
26
You're very honest and share things, maybe too much.
27
What about you?
28
Okay.
29
I I'm probably the same as you.
30
I think I'm
31
not good at keeping secrets but
32
If it's a really important secret and I've been told "please don't tell anyone" then I won't tell anyone.
33
Yes, so Beth, what is the biggest secret you've had to keep?
34
Hmm.
35
Ooh, um...
36
I flew abroad. to surprise
37
my boyfriend at the time his dad and we had to keep it a secret
38
and we even called him in the morning on a video call and pretended we were at home and we were in a different country.
39
Oh my gosh.
40
So that was a Big secret.
41
So it went well?
42
Was he surprised?
43
It did.
44
He was very surprised.
45
We were very pleased that we kept it a secret.
46
We did well.
47
Well done.
48
Well done.
49
I've had to keep a big secret
50
Last year my friend told me that she was going to propose to her girlfriend
51
but she told me I had to keep it a secret and it's really, it was really difficult because we have a group of friends
52
and I really wanted to tell them but I couldn't and I managed to keep it a secret so
53
I was very proud of myself.
54
That's good, well done.
55
That reminds me, I had a big secret too.
56
My friend told me, don't tell anyone and don't tell your mum.
57
And I told my mum by accident.
58
Oh no, can you reveal the secret to us?
59
Oh yeah, she was pregnant, but she's now had the baby.
60
Okay.
61
But she said, yeah, I'm pregnant, but it's really early.
62
So please don't tell anyone.
63
Don't even tell your mum.
64
Okay.
65
And then I spoke to my mum a few weeks later and said, "You don't know, she's pregnant !" And then I realised,
66
oh no, I wasn't supposed to tell you.
67
Oh, but that was kind of an accident.
68
Oh, it was definitely an accident.
69
Yeah.
70
I felt really bad.
71
Oh, well, now she's had the baby.
72
It's all good.
73
It's not a surprise anymore.
74
Sorry.
75
"Beth, do you think secrets are a good or a bad thing?" I think it really depends on the secret.
76
There are good secrets.
77
um like proposing or having a baby and then i guess a bad secret really is
78
a lie
79
if you have to lie then that's not good yeah i
80
agree it's uh it's not yeah it's not good to lie um and i think that's
81
a reason why I'm not very good at keeping secrets because I'm a really bad Liar.
82
You can see it in my face if I'm holding in a secret.
83
Yeah, I think sometimes you can look at someone's face and know what they're thinking.
84
I'm definitely like that if I'm annoyed or angry or...
85
something you can tell from my face.
86
Well that's good because I'll always know that you're being honest and not keeping any secrets from me.
87
Let's recap the vocabulary we heard during the conversation.
88
We had a secret, which is a piece of information that you can't tell other people.
89
And we also have the phrase keep a secret, which means to not share that piece of information.
90
If someone is an open book, they don't have secrets and they're honest about their life.
91
And if you lie, you say something that's not true.
92
It's usually seen as negative, but sometimes you have to lie if you want to keep a secret.
93
And we call someone who lies a lot a liar.
94
And that's it for this episode of Real Easy English.
