Chapter 1 White Roses It's August.
7
Anna is playing her guitar on the balcony of her new apartment.
8
I like it here, she thinks.
9
Then her phone rings.
10
It's her friend, Vicki.
11
I'm coming now, Anna.
12
Anna?
13
It's Grandview Apartments, Charlton, isn't it?
14
That's right.
15
See you soon.
16
Anna takes her guitar and goes out of her apartment.
17
She goes down in the elevator and goes outside.
18
Anna is waiting outside the apartment building.
19
A young man is walking along the street.
20
He is carrying a bunch of white roses.
21
Anna looks at them.
22
What beautiful roses, she thinks.
23
Then she looks at the young man.
24
He's nice too, she thinks.
25
The young man looks at her and smiles.
26
And suddenly Anna's face is pink.
27
Will is walking along the street when he sees a young woman with a guitar.
28
Hmm, a guitar, he thinks.
29
I must play my guitar more often.
30
Then he looks at the young woman.
31
She's nice, he thinks, and he smiles at her.
32
Anna's face is pink and she looks away.
33
Will goes into Grandview Apartments.
34
Just then, Vicki arrives in her car.
35
Hello, Anna, she says.
36
Are you okay?
37
Your face is a bit pink.
38
What's the matter?
39
Oh, uh, nothing," says Anna.
40
They drive away.
41
Vicki talks to Anna.
42
But Anna is thinking about the young man. Who is he?
43
She thinks.
44
Does he live in the building?
45
Who are the roses for?
46
His wife?
47
His girlfriend?
48
His mother?
49
Anna, are you listening?" says Vicki.
50
Oh, sorry Vicki, says Anna.
51
Her face is red now.
52
What are you thinking about? says Vicki.
53
Tell me.
54
Well, I'm thinking about a bunch of roses, says Anna.
55
And a man.
56
Aha!
57
Who is he?
58
Says Vicki.
59
I don't know, says Anna.
60
But I want to know, she thinks.
61
Will arrives at his Gran's apartment.
62
Hello, dear, she says.
63
Oh, you are a good boy.
64
You always bring me roses.
65
Of course, says Will.
66
Gran makes Will some coffee.
67
She asks him a question,
68
but Will does not answer. Will, are you listening?
69
You're thinking about something, aren't you?
70
What is it?
71
Oh, sorry, Gran.
72
It's.. it's not important.
73
Later, Will says goodbye to his gran.
74
Then he gets into his car and drives away.
75
In the car, he thinks about the young woman with the guitar.
76
Where does she live? he thinks.
77
Does she live in one of the apartments or has she We got a friend there.
78
How can I meet her?
79
Who is she?" Five minutes later,
80
Anna and Vicki arrive outside the apartment building.
81
"'Good night, Vicki,' says Anna.
82
"'Quick, go inside,' says Vicki.
83
Think, you walk out of the elevator and there is a young man with a bunch of roses.
84
And he says, Oh, be quiet, laughs Anna.
85
See you tomorrow.
86
Chapter 2 Pink Roses It's September.
87
Will is visiting his gran again.
88
It's a lovely day, Will, she says.
89
Let's have our coffee on the balcony.
90
Will and his gran are sitting on the balcony in the sun, when suddenly Will hears a guitar.
91
Listen, he says.
92
That's a guitar.
93
Where's it coming from?
94
He stands up and looks around, but he cannot see the guitar.
95
Excuse me, Gran, he says.
96
I...er...back soon.
97
And he runs out of the apartment.
98
Will runs along the corridor. Where is the guitar?
99
And who is playing it?
100
He stops outside an apartment and listens.
101
Nothing.
102
Perhaps it's outside, he thinks.
103
Perhaps she's on her balcony.
104
So he goes down in the elevator and goes outside.
105
Upstairs Anna takes her guitar and goes inside.
106
She closes the door to the balcony.
107
That's it for today, she thinks.
108
Will looks at all the balconies, but he cannot see or hear a guitar.
109
He goes back to his gran's apartment.
110
Are you all right, dear?
111
She says.
112
Yes, thanks, Gran, says Will.
113
It's just.. oh, it's not important.
114
Well, it is important, but...
115
And Will tells Gran about the girl with the guitar.
116
A week later, Anna is coming home.
117
She can see a young man near the apartment building, and he is carrying a bunch of roses.
118
Pink roses today.
119
But he is not looking, and he does not see her.
120
Anna walks more quickly, but when she gets to the building, there is nobody there.
121
She gets into the elevator.
122
There is nobody in the elevator.
123
But she can smell roses.
124
Beautiful pink roses.
125
One day Anna comes home and finds Gran at the door of the building with a lot of bags.
126
Oh, can I help you?" she says.
127
Can I carry something?
128
Thank you very much," says Gran.
129
At the apartment Gran says, Come in, dear.
130
Would you like some coffee?
131
Oh, that's very nice of you," says Anna.
132
I'm new here and I don't know anybody in the building.
133
What do you do? asks Gran.
134
I'm a music student, says Anna.
135
Gran brings some coffee into the room.
136
These are lovely apartments, aren't they?
137
Says Anna.
138
Oh yes, says Gran.
139
I like it here very much.
140
She tells Anna about her apartment and about Charlton.
141
Later Anna gets up.
142
I must go now, she says.
143
Thank you for the coffee.
144
Goodbye dear," says Gran, and Anna goes out.
145
What a nice girl, Gran thinks.
146
But just a minute.
147
A music student.
148
Perhaps she's the girl with the guitar.
149
I can ask her over one day when Will comes.
150
No, I can't.
151
I don't know the number of her apartment.
152
Later that week, Vicki talks to Anna.
153
I'm having a party on Saturday, she says.
154
Can you come?
155
Yes, of course, says Anna.
156
Your parties are always wonderful.
157
Vicki calls her brother.
158
Come to my party on Saturday, James, she says, and bring some friends.
159
On Saturday, James and his friends arrive at Vicki's house.
160
Hi, Vicki, says James.
161
Meet my friends.
162
This is Tom. And Daniel.
163
And Will." Just then Vicky's phone rings.
164
"'I'm sorry, Vicky,' says Anna.
165
"'I can't come to your party because I'm not feeling well.' "'Oh,
166
Anna, I'm sorry too,' says Vicky.
167
Well, stay in bed and get better soon.
168
Vicki's party is wonderful.
169
Will meets Natalie and Jane and Katie, but he does not meet Anna.
170
Chapter 3 Red Roses Now it's October.
171
Will visits his gran, but he does not see Anna.
172
He walks along the corridor, but he does not hear a guitar.
173
Where is she? he thinks.
174
Anna visits her family for a week.
175
Then she comes back to her apartment.
176
She looks for Will, but she does not see him.
177
There are lots of men, says Vicki, but Anna cannot forget Will.
178
Then Gran goes to hospital for two weeks.
179
One day Will visits her there.
180
"'How are you today, Gran?' he asks.
181
"'Very well, thank you, dear.
182
I'm going home on Friday.' "'That's good,' says Will.
183
I can get some things for you on Thursday and take them to the apartment." That's very nice of you,
184
Will," says Gran.
185
After work on Thursday, Will goes to the shops and gets some things for Gran.
186
He gets some roses, too, and he puts everything in his car car.
187
Suddenly it begins to rain.
188
Will is getting into his car when he sees his friend, Tom.
189
Where are you going, Tom? says Will.
190
Home, to Eastfield.
191
I'm going to my gran's apartment in Charlton, so I can take you to Eastfield first.
192
Can you take my friend, Anna, too?
193
She's going to Charlton.
194
Yes, of course, says Will.
195
Tom and Anna get into Will's car.
196
Thanks, Will, says Tom.
197
It's not a very nice night.
198
That's all right, Tom, says Will.
199
He drives Tom home.
200
And then he says to Anna, where are you going, Anna?
201
I'm going to Grandview Apartments.
202
It's on Park Road." That's funny," says Will.
203
I'm going to Grandview Apartments." Is it her?
204
He thinks.
205
The girl with the guitar?
206
He looks in the mirror.
207
But he can't see her face very well. Can I smell roses?
208
Thinks Anna. Is it him?
209
The man with the roses?
210
Then they are outside the apartment building.
211
They get out of the car.
212
And then they begin to talk at the same time.
213
Oh, it's you.
214
You play the guitar.
215
And you come here with roses.
216
Yes, I always bring roses to my gran.
217
His gran, thinks Anna.
218
Not his wife.
219
Not his girlfriend.
220
She's coming home from hospital tomorrow, so I'm taking some things to her apartment," says Will.
221
"'Can I… would you like some help?' says Anna.
222
"'Yes, please,' says Will." They go up to Gran's apartment.
223
Will puts things away, and Anna puts the roses in a vase.
224
"'There!
225
Aren't they lovely?' she says.
226
"'I like roses.
227
They smell wonderful.' "'Thank you for your help, Anna,' says Will.
228
"'That's all right,' Anna says.
229
Look, would you like to come up to my apartment for coffee?
230
I'd like to very much, says Will.
231
He smiles, and she smiles.
232
They go upstairs.
233
On Friday, Gran comes home.
234
Will goes to see her.
235
He is carrying a bunch of red roses.
236
That's a big smile, Will, says Gran.
237
Red roses.
238
Don't they say red roses for love?
239
Well, Gran, says Will.
240
Ten minutes later, Will comes out of Gran's apartment and goes upstairs.
241
He's carrying a bunch of red roses.
242
Gran goes out onto the balcony and sits down in the sun.
243
She can hear a guitar.
244
Then it stops.
245
Gran hears Will's voice and Anna's voice.
246
Then Anna laughs.
247
Gran smiles.
248
She can smell roses, beautiful red roses, in the sun, outside, on a balcony.
249
Thank you.

  • "Are you listening?" (Stai ascoltando?): una domanda comune per capire se l'altra persona è attenta.
  • "Just then" (Proprio in quel momento): utile per connettere eventi nel tempo.

Ecco come fare: riproduci il video, metti in pausa dopo ogni frase (ad esempio, "Anna is playing her guitar on the balcony of her new apartment") e ripetila immediatamente, imitando il tono, la velocità e l'accento della speaker.
