The story of Rick Sanchez is incredibly complicated.

Therefore, so you can understand him better, I'm gonna go over every important event which shaped him into the man he is, and cover how trauma can cause even the brightest minds to become deeply flawed.

So get ready, sit back, grab a snack if you want, and enjoy.

Even from a young age, it is clear that Rick is rather intelligent, and has always had a thing for building and inventing.

This is something we get to visually see in Season 5, Episode 8, titled Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort during a flashback sequence.

But, what if I told you that this intelligence maybe isn't as great as you may think, and actually led to Rick having a rather traumatizing life?

The Rick which we get to see throughout the show is from Dimension C-137, so he is often known as Rick C-137, and during the series, we get to see events of his past traumas,

which happened before the series itself even takes place.

Season 3, Episode 1, titled The Rickshank Redemption, is the first major time in the series we get some deep insights regarding these traumas.

In this episode, Rick is being interrogated by the Galactic Federation, and they are doing so by speaking to him within his own subconscious mind.

During this interrogation, we get to see a memory which Rick has before he made a breakthrough in portal travel technology.

In this memory, while working in his garage trying to figure out portal travel, an alternate version of himself comes and speaks with him.

This alternate version of Rick is known as Rick Prime.

Rick Prime lets our Rick know that once he has access to portal travel technology, anything becomes possible, and that R.Rick will essentially become a god with it.

Upon hearing Rick Prime's explanation of what happens once getting portal travel technology, R.Rick decides to pass on being handed the technology by Rick Prime,

because he views himself as a different kind of Rick.

And this causes Rick Prime to leave Rick's garage, while letting him know that no versions of Rick pass on getting portal technology.

Bro, Rick's don't pass on this.

Who do you think you are?

A different kind of Rick, I guess.

Well, we'll see how long that lasts.

After Rick Prime leaves, Rick decides that he should give up on science

and live a more humble life rather than becoming a god with no consequences.

Then shortly after this, while going to get ice cream with his daughter Beth and his wife Diane, a portal opens up in the garage, and a bomb falls through it, which kills both Beth and Diane.

and this then causes Rick to immediately begin figuring out the math required to invent portal travel

while in his blown up garage.

Although, keep in mind, all of this takes place in Rick's subconscious mind while he is being interrogated, and after the audience gets to see these events of Rick's past,

Rick lets the interrogator know that he fabricated this backstory.

So, is any of it actually real?

Well, if we go forward in the series to Season 5, Episode 10, titled Rick Mariah Jack, we can answer that question.

In this episode, Morty gets to see scan of Rick's brain and is made aware of the truths to his backstory.

It turns out that even though Rick claimed the backstory was fabricated while being interrogated, most of it actually wasn't.

Morty gets to see the events where Rick Prime talks to our Rick and then proceeds to kill his family, but rather than immediately inventing portal travel, Rick dealt with depression for a while while living alone.

Then later on he decided to follow through with inventing portal travel and essentially becoming a god, just like Rick Prime predicted.

And he did so, all so he could get revenge on Rick Prime.

Using the portal technology which he was forced to invent because of his want for revenge, our Rick travels to multiple realities and begins killing countless Ricks,

hoping that one of them is Rick Prime.

He even bombs a giant gathering of Ricks who are angry over him killing alternate versions of them across multiple realities, and doing so makes tons of other Ricks submit to him out of fear.

Wow, Rick really is becoming like a god.

Because of so many Ricks realizing the godlike power of Rick C-137, they decide to construct a citadel with him, where Ricks and Mortys are able to reside,

hang out, and get along with one another.

Although, Rick C-137 doesn't really seem to care for the citadel, and only cares about his mission for revenge, which leads him to eventually find Rick Prime's original dimension,

so he then purposefully crashes into Prime's garage, and it turns out Rick Prime abandoned his family.

I mean, we do know that Rick Prime doesn't have any attachment to anything. in itself.

It's a non-stop party where all the guests are the only person we like."

So it does make sense why he'd do this.

Because RickC137 can assume that Rick Prime will never come back to his original family, he decides to take his place, living with an adult version of Beth and her family.

From Beth and the family's perspective, they just think that Rick Prime finally came back after a long time, but in reality, it's just an alternate version of him from another dimension,

who wanted to fill the hole of loneliness in his life that was caused by the murder of his wife and daughter.

On top of this, RickC137 essentially adopts Rick Prime's grandson Morty as his own, without him ever knowing.

And this gives Rick a whole new kind of relationship in his life, as he himself never had a grandson before, because his original daughter never grew old enough to have kids.

After all this trauma, it seems Rick has found his place, and is happy with his new grandson and family.

And then from that point, the series itself begins, and Rick's adoption of this new family, as well as him killing countless other Ricks, has made it clear

that his access to portal travel technology has begun to cause him to start having little care for individual realities and people,

because he knows that his actions practically have no consequences now.

A good first example of this during the series is in Season 1 Episode 6 titled Rick Potion Number 9.

Now back to the video.

While living in Rick Prime's reality with his family, Rick C137 shows us the extent of which he started taking advantage of this consequence-free life.

In this episode, because of a love potion which Rick made Morty going horribly wrong, a worldwide apocalypse is caused.

So Rick decides to take Morty with him to live in a new dimension, where they take the place of their dead counterparts and bury their bodies in their backyard, all while their new family is left unaware of this.

Because this is Morty's first time experiencing something as crazy as moving to a new reality, he seems traumatized by the entire situation.

But Rick is completely unfazed as he's already done this before.

I mean, even the Morty he's been living with isn't his grandson, so why would he be traumatized at this point?

And he's fine with killing countless alternate versions of himself to get revenge, so something like this is normal.

And it's all because nothing matters to him anymore.

Speaking of him killing alternate versions of himself in mass, in Season 1, Episode 10, titled Close Rick Counters of the Rick Kind, the Citadel of Rick's which I mentioned earlier,

apparently has no trust for Rick's C-137 because of the killings which Rick committed in the past.

So they arrest him and bring him to the Citadel, where they blame him for some recent killings of Rick's which have been going on.

And they then scan his portal gun, and it appears that he's been traveling to the places where these Rick's have been being killed.

Rick's C-137 claims that it's a setup, and that he's innocent, but the Citadel still wants to punish him.

So he and Morty make an escape and then go on a mission to track down the real killer.

This causes them to end up finding the lair of the killer, which has a bunch of Morty strapped to the outside of it being purposely put through agonizing pain.

Hmm, I think this may just be Rick expressing how little attachment he really does have for everything, including Morty.

When in the lair, they come across the Rick who's actually behind the murders.

He's called Evil Rick.

As well, he has a sidekick called Evil Morty.

Evil Morty later becomes a very important character in Rick's story, and we'll talk about him more later, so stay tuned for that.

Evil Rick then captures both Rick and Morty, and he tells Rick how similar they actually are.

Apparently, there's only one other Rick between them and how different they are.

So maybe our Rick actually would do the whole thing with, uh, you know, Morty's strapped to an evil lair? Who knows.

Shortly after showing them how similar they are, Evil Rick reveals to Rick C-137 that he plans on downloading the contents of his brain and then killing him.

While Rick's brain is being downloaded, the Mortys which were imprisoned in the lair escape and kill Evil Rick, which allows Rick C-137 and Morty to escape and go back to the Citadel.

The council then apologizes for falsely accusing Rick, and as a gift for their mistake, they offer him a voucher for a free replacement Morty.

And Rick acts like he doesn't want it while in front of Morty, but snags it on his way out.

Yeah, as I was saying about having no attachment to anything or anyone.

But what if I told you it's not just Rick who doesn't value Mortys, but that there's also a Morty who doesn't?

Well, at the end of this episode, it's revealed that Evil Rick wasn't actually a real person, but rather a robot controlled by his supposed sidekick, Evil Morty.

Crazy.

This means it was a Morty putting all those Mortys in agonizing pain, and as well it was a Morty who infiltrated Rick's brain, but what could a Morty possibly want to accomplish with all that?

Well, I'll get into the details of that later in the video.

So first, let's continue to go over Rick's character development throughout the series.

Even though I've talked lots about how selfish Rick can be due to the fact

that he's essentially a god after inventing portal travel, he may actually not be completely self-centered.

Because in Season 2, Episode 10, titled The Wedding Squanchers, Rick

and his entire family have to abandon their home due to him being hunted by the Galactic Federation.

While hiding on a new planet, Rick overhears Jerry talking to the family about how they should just turn Rick into the Federation

so they themselves can live good lives, and that they should do so because Rick has only ever been selfish and probably wouldn't sacrifice for them.

But Beth, Morty, and Summer disagree and believe they should stick by Rick.

And Beth mentions how she doesn't want him to leave again, which is referring to Rick Prime originally abandoning them, as she's completely unaware that her original father actually never returned,

but rather that it was Rick C-137 who's been with them.

Seeing his new family's support causes Rick to finally do a selfless act, which is turning himself into the Galactic Federation so his adopted family can live good lives.

Although he's fine with sacrificing for Morty, Summer, and Beth, Rick clearly has something against Jerry.

Because, while turning himself in, he says this.

Honestly though, Rick's dislike for Jerry is somewhat understandable, because even after he turns himself in, while the entire family is sad about Rick doing so, Jerry seems happy.

Although soon enough, Jerry will regret this happiness and wanting to betray Rick.

I mean, come on, you're wanting to betray a man whose entire life purpose involves getting revenge.

So I think it would be safe to assume Rick might be completely fine with getting revenge on you Jerry, and Rick does in fact do so.

Let me explain how.

Coming back to the episode I mentioned earlier, Season 3, Episode 1 titled The Rickshank Redemption where Rick is being interrogated by the Galactic Federation.

During the episode, Rick manages to escape interrogation and overthrow the Galactic Federation by destroying the economy.

After doing so, he comes home to Beth and Jerry, and Jerry is mad about Rick's return.

So he tells Beth to choose between him or Rick.

And Beth chooses Rick over him and gets a divorce.

Jerry's going to spend some time divorced.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that sweetie.

I hope I had nothing to do with that.

This causes Morty to feel sad about the divorce.

But he doesn't get to feel sad for long, because Rick then goes on to rant to him about how he coordinated his parents' divorce by turning himself in

and overthrowing the government.

All because Jerry wanted to betray him.

As well, all of this was so he could take over the family and force Morty to go on adventures with him.

And on top of this, he even threatens Morty.

He threatened to turn me into the government so I made him and the government go away.

going through a character arc of becoming more selfless due to developing emotional attachment to his family wasn't necessarily

And he only continues to prove this by doing even more crazy selfish things such as giving Beth an existential crisis.

In season 3 episode 9 titled The ABCs of Beth, Beth realizes how much she is like Rick and that her intelligence can make her feel insane.

To help Beth cope, Rick suggests that she should leave her universe and do as she pleases.

Kind of like what he himself did, and that's why he's even having this conversation with her in the first place.

But he doesn't mention this part to her.

She doesn't want to go along with Rick's idea because of having to take care of her kids.

So, Rick lets her know that he can make a clone of her to take care of everything, while she does anything she wants, anywhere she wants.

It sure is starting to seem like Rick's immense power has made him constantly confused by his own nihilism.

After a moment of thought on Rick's clone idea, Beth makes a decision.

But in this episode we aren't shown what decision she actually makes.

So later on I'll talk more about what her decision really was, because it does get revealed in a later episode.

Funnily enough, it turns out, not even Beth is actually sure which decision she made.

As in season 3 episode 10 titled The Rickchurri and Morty Date, Beth calls Rick wondering if she is or isn't a clone.

And Rick at first tells her she isn't, but then follows up with an interesting response.

Just to be sure, you're not pretending to be convinced you're real because you're actually convinced you're a clone, and you're now terrified that becoming self-aware would mean I'd have to terminate you.

And it causes Beth to go to Jerry's house to talk with him about it, which ends up leading to them getting back together with one another.

Although after they get back together, the family decides to leave Rick and hide away from their house

because they're scared he'll kill Beth if she actually is a clone.

But their hiding doesn't stop Rick and he shortly shows up with a gun.

Except he doesn't do so, and just wants to get on with things and go on adventures with Morty.

But Morty tells him that he won't go with him on adventures, and is staying with the family.

After this, Beth mentions how things can go back to how they were in season one of the show.

But Rick just seems annoyed by this comment and clearly is beginning to devalue the family more and more.

Now that we got to see the results of Beth wondering if she's a clone or not and how Rick reacts, you're probably wondering, is there actually even a clone of Beth?

As I mean, it's actually not 100% known if the Beth I just talked about is a clone or not.

Well, in Season 4, Episode 10, titled Star Mort Return of the Geri, another version of Beth visits Rick and is rather mad because she is also wondering if she is or isn't a clone.

This Beth is known as Space Beth, and she's wanted by the Galactic Federation.

So, when they come after her while she's with the family of Rick C-137, the Federation is unsure if her or the other Beth are the wanted criminal, and even Jerry is confused as well.

More importantly, which one is mine?

Uh, neither, chauvinist.

Because of this confusion, the Federation arrests both of the Beths.

So, the family goes to save them.

And after doing so, Rick reveals that he erased his own memory to forget which Beth is real and which isn't.

As well, he saved the memory on a device to be replayed

so that they could find out the answer at a later point.

But both Beths and the rest of the family decide that they don't want to know who's real.

So Rick then decides to rewatch the memory himself and it's revealed that during the time I mentioned earlier, where it was unclear to the audience if Beth decided she wanted to be cloned or not,

that Beth gave Rick the power to make a decision on if she should get cloned or not, and that he decided to go through with it and clone her.

Maybe he did this so he could have a version of his daughter which he can relate to better, at the expense of the sanity of both her and her clone.

Well, that's actually only the case up until Season 5, Episode 9, titled Forgetting Sarek Mortchall, where Rick abandons Morty just to replace him with two crows.

And even after seeing the terrible state that Morty ends up in without him, where he ends up losing his own hand,

Rick still decides to leave Morty in order to continue his adventures with two crows.

And Morty is crushed by this.

Even in the next episode, which is Season 5, Episode 10, titled Rick Mariah Jack, Rick is still with the crows,

and comes across Morty who is now 40 years old.

So supposedly Rick has been adventuring with these crows for like 26 years?

40 year old Morty just wants Rick to come back home

But Rick doesn't want to and only does

so once he ends up having a falling out with the crows Which causes him to finally come back to Morty.

So yeah Basically, it took a breakup with literal birds for him to decide to come back.

Yikes When Rick does come back it turns out Morty used an aging serum to emotionally blackmail him

and isn't actually 40 years old So, now that Rick got back together with Morty,

only due to the fact that his crows betrayed him, he decides to take Morty to the Citadel in order to de-age him.

And while at the Citadel, they end up meeting President Morty for dinner.

Then at dinner, President Morty reveals to Rick and Morty that he is actually Evil Morty, the same one I mentioned earlier.

And he explains the reason that he's evil is because he wants to take down the central finite curve.

This causes Morty, and probably some of you, to wonder what is the central finite curve?

And Rick seems disturbed that Evil Morty is aware of what the central finite curve is, and makes the connection

that Evil Morty got a full brain scan of him during their encounter with Evil Rick back in season 1 episode 10, which is one of the episodes I mentioned earlier.

Us as the audience were already aware of Evil Morty doing this, but Rick and Morty weren't up to this point.

After revealing all of this, Evil Morty uses Rick's brain scan to show Morty how Rick's Morty's is disposable across the multiverse.

And right after this reveal, Evil Morty hacks all portal gun travel, and lets Rick and Morty leave his office.

Rick is worried, and assumes that Evil Morty is going to use the knowledge

which was scanned from his brain in order to break the central finite curve, and Morty still has no idea what that means, because Rick hasn't explained.

So he gets annoyed that Rick isn't giving him any straight answers, which causes Rick to decide, Screw it.

And by using the brain scan device he stole from Evil Morty's desk on his way out of his office, he lets Morty see his entire backstory of the time before he began living with him

and essentially adopted him as a grandson, which is the same scene I mentioned earlier in this video.

After seeing Rick's backstory, Morty feels bad, but Evil Morty then shows up and instantly begins to reveal what the central finite curve actually is.

He explains how Rick separated all universes where he's the smartest person from all the ones where he's not, and how the suffering of countless Mortys is a result of this.

All because Rick views himself as a victim, due to his wife and kid dying.

And Evil Morty no longer wants a part of it, so he decides he's going to break free from this limited branch of reality and explore the multiverse.

This is what makes Evil Morty evil, because he doesn't want to put up with Rick and is sick of him.

Therefore, at this time while he lives within the central finite curve, where Rick is the smartest man in every accessible universe, By default, he is viewed as evil.

This speech from Evil Morty causes Morty to reflect on what kind of person Rick really is.

And then Evil Morty proceeds to breach the central finite curve and leaves to the vast multiverse.

All while Rick and Morty narrowly escape death because of the chaos

which this causes and are left stranded with no portal fluid to make it home.

But luckily, they're saved by Spacebeth in the next episode, which is Season 6, Episode 1, titled Solarrix.

After being saved, Rick goes to reset the portal index, so that portal travel can work once again.

But while doing so, he accidentally resets portal travelers instead, which causes him, Morty, and Jerry to get sent back to their original dimensions.

Obviously, we already know Rick and Morty get reset, because they've been living in an alternate reality for a while now.

And I'd assume Jerry probably gets reset

because of him getting mixed up with another Jerry at a Jerry daycare in Season 2, Episode 2, titled Morty Night Run.

When Rick gets reset and sent back to his original reality, it turns out that in this reality he made an AI ghost of his wife to haunt him.

that he even trapped everyone in this reality's mind in a time loop to be stuck on the day

But while doing so, he forgot about the problem of aging, which caused everyone to grow old, while their minds were stuck in this loop.

Rick then leaves his original dimension through the hole in the central finite curve which Evil Morty created, and goes to find Morty in HIS original dimension, which is the dimension where they caused an apocalypse

and had to abandon in Season 1 Episode 6 titled Rick Potion Number 9, which is also one of the episodes I mentioned earlier.

Once Rick finds Morty, they continue to go on their regular adventures.

Well on this irregular adventure, they find a base of Rick Prime and are taunted by a pre-recording of him.

Although, while this is going on, Beth, Spacebeth, and Summer are in danger, so Rick and Morty leave the taunting of Rick Prime to help them.

And after they all meet up, they decide to go get Jerry from his original dimension and all go back home together.

Although another Jerry is at their home, this Jerry has a pet of Rick's called Mr. Frundles, and he releases Mr. Frundles, which causes a world-ending chain reaction.

So instantly upon fixing things and making it home, they have to find yet another new reality.

So now the entire family gets to bury their dead bodies in another reality and assimilate into it, instead of just Rick and Morty.

But Rick isn't gonna let this little sidetrack stop him from his primary goal of getting revenge on Rick Prime.

So in season 6 episode 10 titled Rickshenal Mortpoon's Rickmismortcation, Rick does just that and continues his mission.

But only after leaving the family with a robot version of himself called Rickbot.

All because in season 6 episode 9 titled a Rick and King Mortar's Mort, Morty wanted to go on a stupid adventure

which led him to being pressured into chopping his junk off for a religious cause.

And because of Morty calling Rick boring before that adventure even fully took place, Rick switched himself with a robot for the whole adventure and beyond that, all while he invested his time into hunting Rick Prime.

After the family finds out about Rick having replaced himself with Rickbot, and after Rickbot dies, Rick invites Morty to help him track down Rick Prime,

which may seem nice, but in reality, it's just Rick's selfish wants.

This is the closest I've ever been to catching Rick Prime, but now we're gonna do it together.

In Season 7, Episode 5, titled Unmore Rickon, there's then a major step of progress in Rick's mission for revenge.

The episode starts with a flashback of Evil Morty killing Ricks from countless realities and stealing the knowledge from their brains, as well as kidnapping their Mortys.

This is during the same time which he captured Rick's C-137 and scanned his brain in Season 1, Episode 10.

I guess this maybe means Rick's C-137 isn't so special after all.

As well, just the same as how many Ricks treat Mortys as disposable, Evil Morty treats Mortys and Ricks as disposable.

After this flashback, Evil Morty is shown enjoying his time in the multiverse, which is not limited by the central finite curve.

But this is ruined by Rick and Morty trying to track down Rick Prime.

So Evil Morty comes to them, and he gives them advice on ways of trying to find Rick Prime, ways that'll not disturb him in other parts of the multiverse.

After getting this advice, they then find a Rick Prime which seems different from the decoys which they have been finding already.

And upon killing this decoy of Rick Prime, it bursts into a black goo and brings them to a chamber, where they come across other Ricks who are also hunting Rick Prime.

A pre-recording of Rick Prime then reveals that he killed the wives of all Ricks across Infinity.

Rick was already aware of this, but Morty wasn't.

And then this automated recording lets them all know that the last Rick standing gets their wife back, but Rick C-137 believes he's lying.

While Rick, Morty, and Evil Morty escape, they manage to bring home some of the black goo from Rick Prime's trap.

Using this goo, Rick finds Rick Prime's location and goes to kill him, while leaving Evil Morty and Morty behind.

But Evil Morty takes Morty to Rick Prime's base, and they end up coming across Rick anyway.

While fighting Rick Prime at his base, he says how he's going to start erasing Rick C-137's family from Infinity, one by one, just as he did Diane.

And he proves it by starting with killing Uncle Slow, who's also known as Slow Mobius.

After fighting for a while, Rick and Evil Morty end up defeated by Rick Prime, and just Morty is left.

So while talking to his original grandson, Rick Prime lets his guard down, and gets incapacitated by Morty.

He then leaves them alone together, and Rick C-137 begins to punch Rick Prime to death, while Prime makes fun of Rick and mocks him about how he is the only one who gave his life purpose,
