Shoo Shoo!
2
Oh no, little kitty!
3
Don't shoo it away!
4
Let it do its job!
5
It's only trying to help the plant pollinate!
6
What?
7
How? well that's an interesting question hey friends i'm sure you
8
must have heard the term pollination in school many times
9
but have you ever wondered how exactly it works well in
10
today's episode let us explore the reproductive world of plants and answer an evergreen question what is pollination Zoom in! So, what is pollination?
11
It is the process through which flowers reproduce.
12
Meaning, they give birth to fruits and crops.
13
But the vital question is, how does it happen?
14
To know that, first we need to learn about the reproductive parts of the flowers.
15
And what are they?
16
Well, the flower consists of both male and female reproductive parts.
17
The male reproductive part of the flower is called a stamen.
18
It is made up of anther and filament.
19
The anther has a sac -like structure that contains pollen grains, which are the yellow, powdery,
20
tiny particles that play a crucial role in reproduction and below the anther is a long stem -like part called the filament.
21
On the other hand, the female reproductive part of a flower is called pistil.
22
Consisting of stigma and ovaries, the stigma has a glue -like substance,
23
whereas the stile is a thin stem -like structure that connects the stigma to the ovary.
24
A sack -like structure that contains eggs which reside in ovules.
25
Now that we have learned about a plant's reproductive parts, let us know about the process of pollination.
26
Pollination is a process through which pollen grains are picked from an anther and transferred to the flower's stigma.
27
This process can occur in two ways, self -pollination and cross -pollination.
28
So, let us look at them in detail.
29
Self -pollination occurs when the pollen from the anther is deposited on the stigma of the same flower
30
or another flower on the same plant through wind and water.
31
Whereas, cross -pollination occurs between different plants in
32
which pollen grains are transferred from anther of one flower or plant to the stigma of another through agents like insects,
33
birds, wind etc known as pollinators.
34
For example, when a bee sits on a flower for sipping nectar,
35
the pollen gets stuck on its body and when it flies to the next flower for more nectar,
36
the pollen from the bee's body gets deposited on the female reproductive part.
37
And when that happens, the pollen gets slipped into the ovary
38
and enters the ovule where seeds are formed through a method called fertilization.
39
This animal or insect -based cross -pollination process is known as ZOOPHYLY.
40
And just like that, it can happen in two more ways.
41
First is ANIMOPHYLY, where the pollens are transferred by winds.
42
And the second process is ANTHROPOPHYLY, where plants are artificially pollinated by humans using cotton swab.
43
Trivia time!
44
Did you know, more than 70 % of plant species depend on insects, birds, bats and other animals to transport the pollen?
45
Also, at least 30 % of 1500 crop plant species in the world depend on pollination by bees and other insects.
46
Hope you learned something new in today's episode.
47
Until next time, it's me, Dr. Binox, zooming out.
48
Hmm, never mind.
