1
Hey guys, tonight we're driving a 2015 Dodge Viper.
2
This has an 8 .4 liter V10, makes 645 horsepower.
3
We have a six -speed manual transmission.
4
This was the base model back in the day.
5
My good friend Tom just picked this up.
6
He also had a 2003 Viper SRT10, the convertible.
7
There he is.
8
Say hello, Tom.
9
Hey guys.
10
So we're just going to walk around this real quick and then we'll take it for a POV night drive.
11
We're gonna be taking it easy tonight.
12
Again, we're gonna be kind of cruising around in this thing.
13
We have a slightly older set of tires on this.
14
These are Pirelli P0s in 355 30R19 in the rear, and then 295s in the front, I believe.
15
Anyway, those are gonna get replaced here pretty soon because they've got some ears on them, and with a car like this,
16
you want a nice, fresh set of sticky tires with a modern compound
17
and 645 horsepower you can't have enough grip
18
so let's pop the hood I don't even know how you
19
pop the hood is it from the outside is it from the inside all vipers are from the outside all right
20
pull man gen 3 and 4 the hood releases in the front okay yeah that's what I thought
21
You drove us back from Virginia.
22
I did, yeah.
23
And what gas mileage did you get?
24
I managed 20 .4 miles per gallon over 702 miles.
25
That's amazing.
26
From an 8 .4 liter V10.
27
Yeah.
28
All right.
29
First Viper with cruise control.
30
I'd say I used it for probably 400 miles or so, and that was definitely part of what helped me achieve that gas mileage.
31
This is just living in luxury.
32
You've got all the modern amenities.
33
Reverse camera.
34
You've got a reverse camera.
35
You could probably fit this with CarPlay eventually.
36
Cool.
37
Alright, let's take it for a drive.
38
I'll let you close the hood.
39
It's so cool that they've kept with this massive hood.
40
It's got to be one of the biggest individual body panels for sale in a car.
41
Since the earlier generation Vipers, the hoods used to come all the way down to...
42
Jeez.
43
Jeez.
44
This thing is gorgeous, man.
45
Absolutely stunning.
46
Nice fat five -spoke wheels.
47
What was the MSRP on this when it was new for the base model?
48
It was just short of 86 grand.
49
86 grand, okay.
50
So they just lowered the MSRP from 15 when they switched back from SRT Dodge bike.
51
Cool.
52
All right, let's take this for a drive.
53
Again, we're just gonna be cruising in this tonight
54
until we get some better rubber on here
55
but yeah I wanted to kind of start off
56
and make a little bit of a video series on this Viper just
57
because it'd be fun and there aren't a lot of Vipers out on YouTube.
58
I was actually thinking about buying one of these myself well not a fifth gen a third
59
or fourth gen but yeah Tom decided to go ahead and beat me to the punch which is just fine.
60
All the benefits without the risks.
61
Yeah That's right.
62
Speaking of risks though, you did swing for a factory warranty, an extended warranty on this.
63
Extra what, three, four years?
64
Three years.
65
Three years?
66
Cool.
67
That's nice that Dodge still offers something like that.
68
Yeah, just I like to drive my vehicles.
69
I'm hoping I can put 10, 12, 15 ,000 miles on this over the next two years.
70
I mean, it just seemed like the best way to enjoy it without concern.
71
Yeah.
72
How many miles did you put on your old Viper?
73
You put quite a few.
74
I put 20 ,000 miles on my old Viper in two years.
75
That's awesome.
76
Look at that reverse camera.
77
It solves all your problems.
78
Clutch engagement point is very high in the pedal.
79
Steering's nice and heavy.
80
I've got to admit, I've really only driven Vipers on track.
81
and except for your third gen this is the only time I've driven one on the street
82
revs drop pretty quickly between gears definitely no rev hang issues here
83
Such an iconic sound from these V10s.
84
Of course, you've got the...
85
There's no replacement.
86
And of course, you've got the side pipes right next to you.
87
Zero wind buffeting in this cabin.
88
That's kinda cool, you can just roll with the windows down.
89
Yeah, we're recording this with binaural microphones,
90
in -ear microphones, and usually I'll wear these little earmuffs to prevent wind buffeting from affecting the mics, but in this, I don't have any earmuffs on.
91
We've got the windows down, and it's really nice.
92
Really great car to cruise in.
93
That's kind of a surprise.
94
Anyways, I found that the more aerodynamic modern cars get, the worse they are to experience with the windows down.
95
Supra, new BRZ, new GR86, they're all some of the worst offenders.
96
But I guess there's a lot still old school about this Viper.
97
It's relatively easy to drive once you get into the rhythm of it.
98
This transmission is just awesome.
99
That lap is something you can't put a price on.
100
That's why there's nothing like this.
101
It's so raw, so engaging, so immediate and like connected.
102
It's stiff, but it I mean it just it makes you feel like you're in something special.
103
The view over the hood, the gauges, all of your inputs, the tightness of the pedal box, everything is so close together.
104
Stock exhaust is pretty droney around 3000 rpm but
105
I think you might try to fix that with the Corsa system or something.
106
Possibly.
107
Yeah, we'll see.
108
It shot flames.
109
It did.
110
It was amazing.
111
And one of my favorite things about this new Viper
112
is that on the highway 80 miles an hour you're sitting at over 2 ,000 rpm
113
and you're not bogging the engine like you were in the previous gen or the third and fourth gen cars.
114
Maybe they're revising gearing in the fourth gen cars
115
but the third gens you're sitting in six at like what was it 1500 rpm, 1200 rpm?
116
I think it was 1600 or 1700.
117
Yeah and it was only happy doing 90, 95 miles an hour.
118
And this, you can just be comfortable at 70 or 75, which is great.
119
Makes it a much more livable car to drive on the highway.
120
And even the noise isn't too bad at 75 either.
121
We have a ton of different gauge displays here.
122
There's even SRT performance pages.
123
You can see your tire pressure, loyal temp, coolant temp pretty much everything you want,
124
everything you can see in modern FCA Stellantis products as shown here on this Viper.
125
And really the reason why you went for this 5th gen is you just wanted a modern interior, you wanted a nice interior, and the 3rd and 4th gen Viper's interior is probably the worst thing about those cars.
126
Yeah, I spent some time and money kind of trying to update the interior that I had in my 3rd gen Viper.
127
Do you remember I updated the lights on the gauge cluster?
128
Yeah, they were dull, brown, they were white.
129
They went with LEDs.
130
There was also a portion of my dash that was cracked, so I removed that part and put it in another piece.
131
It was really brittle plastic, so reinstalling the new part was terrifying.
132
Well, yeah, driving with the top on there's a ton of wind noise.
133
This is just a little more modern.
134
You've got Bluetooth touchscreen, you've got reverse mirror, or reverse camera, sorry.
135
Cruise control, which I mentioned earlier.
136
It's equally as fun to drive as my third Jeep was with a lot more modern amenities.
137
Yeah.
138
It's a perfect picture.
139
A little bit more expensive, but worth the price, and these values aren't going anywhere.
140
It's going to hold its value and you can get a warranty on it.
141
It's a win -win.
142
Dude, I'm so glad you got this.
143
You had a C6 Corvette Grand Sport for a couple years.
144
I did.
145
You enjoyed that.
146
That was a great car.
147
I loved it for what it was.
148
That car was extremely trailer driver friendly.
149
So, even, I mean, there's winter tires for that car.
150
I plan to drive this a similar amount, but if I need to make a run to Casco,
151
I'll probably take my sedan rather than the Corvette, or now the Viper.
152
Yeah, you've got a pretty ideal garage going right now.
153
What's your daily?
154
It's a 2017 CTS V Sport, which is a lovely, lovely vehicle.
155
Yeah, you love that thing.
156
Car seat in the back, plenty of space, very comfortable.
157
If I'm able to behave myself, I get some great gas mileage.
158
Yeah, that's a fun car.
159
It's fast too.
160
It is, it's very quick.
161
It's basically the same motor as what's in the ATS -V minus...
162
What is it?
163
Something about the...
164
So, the motor itself is nearly identical.
165
The only difference is the push rods.
166
Okay.
167
The material things.
168
The difference is on the turbos and cooling.
169
Oh, dude, I love it.
170
What's not the lie?
171
I love it.
172
That's so amazing.
173
It's my first time in the past.
174
I've never seen it.
175
That's right.
176
I'm having as much fun over here as I have over there.
177
It just sounds so good.
178
I have a soft spot for the sound because it reminds me of, like, I grew up with five -cylinder Volvos.
179
This is 2X a five -cylinder Volvo and then some, but, oh, it's just, That verbal,
180
that V10 warble is so, so cool.
181
And the power this thing makes is insane.
182
It's just a torque monster.
183
Third gear, 2200 RPM. And this shifter.
184
You have to be kind of quick with your inputs once everything warms up.
185
But it really rewards kind of more spirited and aggressive driving.
186
This car just...
187
It encourages you to go faster, it encourages you, it goads you on to drive it like a race car a little bit.
188
Bad influence.
189
Oh, it's a really good bad influence.
190
The shifter's interesting, everything is kind of angled forward a little bit.
191
A little bit like the Shelby Cobra, yeah.
192
Wow.
193
And there's a learning curve for this car.
194
Like, initially it's easy to drive, but driving it well, and driving it well fast, it's gonna take some time.
195
And that's cool.
196
That's rewarding.
197
That's exciting.
198
Yeah, I agree.
199
The TR6060, the Trans, was very popular amongst minicars for a range of years.
200
Great Trans, great feedback.
201
I like the shifter in this.
202
You know me, I've changed out shifters in previous cars.
203
Yeah.
204
If I was looking for something specific, this one I couldn't ask for anymore.
205
I'll leave it as is.
206
I think it's great.
207
Yeah, I wouldn't go any shorter or stiffer with the throw on this.
208
It's perfect.
209
I do love on the upshifts when you're really going through gears.
210
That's the only time you hear it in the exhaust, the pop between gears.
211
Yeah, I've spent a little bit of time in these 5th gen Vipers
212
and one week we were filming and shooting one out at MIS, Michigan International Speedway, with Auto Week,
213
and they were timing 0 -60 runs, and the guy who was doing the driving had some experience as a drag racer.
214
He was kind of struggling to get consistent launches out of the car, but he could just absolutely bang gears in this with his TR6060.
215
It really responds well to fast shifts and high -performance driving.
216
So that's probably one of the most impressive things about this 5th gen Viper.
217
They've kept this transmission since like the 08s, right?
218
Correct.
219
Yeah, okay.
220
I'm not sure exactly or in which they switched from the T56 to the TR6060. But, yeah.
221
I'm pretty sure they added it with a 4th gen, like 3rd gen to 4th gen changeover.
222
Because they added more power, they switched up the V10 a little bit, made a bunch of tweaks.
223
Yeah, it's really really nice.
224
Definitely a highlight of this car.
225
I'm curious to see How this handles with a good set of tires.
226
I can feel around the corners like they're a little sketchy.
227
Everything seems to be pretty warm well warmed up tonight.
228
We're not having too many issues breaking traction, but Yeah, you definitely want to get a sticky set of good tires on.
229
On your previous Viper, you had a set of Pilot Super Sports, and they just hooked up for days.
230
They almost hooked up all the way through first.
231
It was really impressive.
232
Almost.
233
Yeah, almost.
234
When those Vipers came out, I think they were just sketchy because tire technology
235
and compound just weren't as good back in the early 2000s or mid to late 90s.
236
And now we have some pretty impressive compounds.
237
Kind of limited on options with these cars, but what is available is pretty sticky and pretty track -oriented.
238
Yeah, there's a set from Continental available and a set from Michelin available.
239
Okay.
240
Both should be fantastic.
241
Yeah.
242
Not cheap.
243
What is it, about two grand for a set?
244
Yeah.
245
Man, this thing just feels full -on race car the pedal box, the steering inputs, the weight of everything,
246
the shifter awesome
247
yeah the pedal box is not for club shoes no definitely a great car to have Chuck Taylors for track day.
248
Chuck Taylors or Pilates or your barefoot running shoes.
249
Yeah you'll probably do a couple track days in this.
250
It's kind of what it's built for.
251
A couple in a year.
252
Yeah.
253
I'm excited for that.
254
These are pretty good to go out of the box on track aren't they?
255
Brakes, cooling, it all works.
256
Yeah from my understanding that's correct.
257
People do upgrade some small things here and there.
258
Brink pads for example.
259
If they're looking for something specific for an initial bite or whatnot, but generally from the factory you can take them to a track and beat them up.
260
Cool.
261
And Ralph Gilles once said on Jay Leno that his favorite Viper was the base model because it's the lightest, it's the simplest.
262
It's the purest expression of the car.
263
I gotta say, it gives you all the thrills and the whole experience.
264
I've driven a bunch of other GTSs and ACRs, and those are fun, but for the prices
265
that they're going for I don't know I think this is this scratches the itch it's enough
266
This is a car that demands all of your attention all the time.
267
You called me earlier today and we were having a very simple conversation about
268
when we were going to meet to film this video.
269
You couldn't focus on it.
270
And I said, man, I called you back.
271
I can't focus right now.
272
I'm driving.
273
And I realized after we hung up, I never really said something like that while driving a car before.
274
I'm using Bluetooth.
275
I knew we were coming through the speakers.
276
I was using the microphone, all that.
277
I just couldn't do it all at once.
278
Oops, I missed my exit.
279
That's kind of the best thing about this car, though, is it really demands your attention.
280
And it's like, you know, playing a sport or going out and working out or you know doing an activity that
281
demands 100 % concentration it's it's kind of a release it's
282
a little bit of a getaway it's a mental vacation it's a man exactly I have soccer
283
when I play but it's so I would I would say it's the same thing exactly a mental vacation
284
little three -pointer here Yikes Yeah,
285
not for the timid But still rewarding To those who are brave enough
286
What a hoon!
287
What a hoon!
288
What a car man!
289
You don't cut out anything stupid I said right?
290
Oh yeah!
291
Everything stupid I say too!
292
Perfect! So I...
293
That is one thing I forgot about the Viper.
294
You get that shit constantly!
295
Everyone just thinks you're super cool.
296
Headlights could be re -aimed a little bit better.
297
Dude, you never turn out the lights.
298
Oh yeah, they're pretty good.
299
Here, we'll pull into this little industrial complex here and wrap things up and show you guys the lights.
300
Hello, hello V10 revs.
301
It says to have a super lightweight flywheel.
302
It revs just like a maniac.
303
It does.
304
Yeah.
305
Oh, rides are great.
306
That's impressive.
307
How's the stereo?
308
It's pretty good.
309
That's good.
310
It is the base model, so it's missing about seven speakers.
311
It's plenty for me.
312
Oh, it's okay.
313
All right.
314
Well, I am very excited to spend some more time in this car with you.
315
We're going to go to some car shows.
316
We're going to maybe do a track day.
317
Lots of fun times ahead.
318
And we'll be sure to film as much of it as we can and share it with you guys.
319
So anyway, that's going to be a wrap for this one.
320
Dude, congrats.
321
Thank you.
322
Yeah.
323
I'm excited.
324
This is pretty exciting.
325
Cool.
326
Yeah, tires are definitely warm.
327
Yeah.
328
They're throwing stuff left and right.
329
Nice and sticky.
330
We're just going to let it idle.
331
And do another walk around and that'll be it.
332
Cool, man.
333
Well, hey, thanks.
334
Thank you.
335
Yeah.
336
We'll see you guys in the next video.
337
My face hurts from grinning.
338
I love that they stuck with the side pipes on these cars too.
339
I mean, there were a few necessities.
340
So, V10, manual transmission, side pipes.
341
Yeah. And that's about it.
342
I just like that it adds another element of danger to the car.
343
Ah, it's so good.
344
It's so spectacular.
345
This is by far the most connected car I've met.
346
So suspension, brakes, steering, throttle response, all of it is just so in tune with one another.
347
I've never felt more connected to a vehicle ever.
348
And that's what shot tires.
349
Once I get this dialed in...
350
So this is by far the best initial bite that I have brakes I've had on any car.
351
Oh yeah, brake pedal feel is awesome.
352
I'll tell if there's none of the car coming for the weight.
353
The steering is instant.
354
And the weight I love.
355
Yeah, it's so hefty.
356
It's extremely heavy.
