This is 6 Minute English from bbclearningenglish.com Hello, I'm Rob.
2
Welcome to 6 Minute English.
3
I'm joined today by Finn.
4
Hello, Finn.
5
Hi, Rob.
6
Today we're talking about a subject that many of us have experienced.
7
It's living at home, particularly when we're grown up and in our 20s.
8
Now, Finn, what age were you when you left home?
9
Well, Rob, I was 18 and I'd just finished school and, you know, I was really, really excited to go out and see the world.
10
So I left home quite young.
11
Yeah, well I left home at the age of 18 too, to go to university, and I never looked back.
12
But, of course, not everyone leaves home when they're that young, and we'll be discussing the reasons why,
13
and discovering why more young people in the UK are staying at the hotel of mum and dad.
14
Yes, we'll explain some related vocabulary too, But first I have a question for you, Finn.
15
According to the UK's Office for National Statistics, in 2013, what percentage of 20 to 34-year-olds were living at home with their parents?
16
Was it a.
17
16%, b.
18
26% or c.
19
36%?
20
I'll say 36%.
21
OK, I'll tell you the answer later on.
22
Back to our discussion about living at home.
23
Residing with or living with your parents is not that unusual in some countries.
24
Economic conditions, culture or family tradition means that some young people stay at home until they get hitched or get married.
25
Yes, but even then it may be too expensive to rent
26
or buy a house and the married couple continue to live at one of their parents' homes.
27
But living conditions can be a bit cramped like that.
28
I'm sure, yes.
29
But in the UK it's been more common to leave home at a fairly young age
30
and get your own place to live, maybe sharing it with other people, like a flat share.
31
Yes, a lot of people will have to move to another city to take up a job, to get a job, or they may be going to university.
32
But all of this comes at a price.
33
There are bills to pay, there's food to buy, plus the cost of accommodation.
34
That's why there's been an increase in young people living with their parents for longer.
35
The recent economic downturn is the biggest factor.
36
It's harder for them to get on the property ladder to buy a house.
37
But what's it like to be 27 and still living under the same roof as Mum?
38
Well, Luke Sibson knows he's 27 and still lives with his mum.
39
What does he say is the biggest difficulty?
40
Luke Sibson, I have set plans to own a house
41
and a car and have a family by the time I'm I'm now 27 and I'm not any closer to achieving that.
42
There's something very difficult about being a 27 year old man living at home with your mum.
43
There's something very difficult about being an adult living in an environment where you're still a child.
44
It limits me socially.
45
Sometimes I feel like it limits me professionally.
46
Oh dear.
47
He had big plans for what he wanted by the time he was 30.
48
But he's still at home and finds it difficult being an adult in an environment,
49
or a place where you live, where you're a child.
50
So he feels like a child because he's being looked after and doesn't have much independence.
51
This limits him in what he can do socially.
52
I suppose he can't bring lots of friends home or leave the house in a mess.
53
Yes, and he thinks it also limits him professionally so it can affect his career.
54
Well, I have to admit, Rob, if I was living at home now it would drive me mad.
55
Well, not everyone has a choice, and some might feel the benefits, the good things, are greater than the bad things.
56
Alberto Barragan is 29 and lives near Madrid in Spain, a country where unemployment amongst the young is high.
57
He says home living is not all bad.
58
Can you hear what his reasons are?
59
Basically, I don't have to wash my clothes, I don't have to make my bed, I don't have to buy anything for me,
60
because my man does all these things for me.
61
You don't have to be worried about paying taxes or paying electricity, any bills.
62
You are living basically for free.
63
Well, he says you're living for free.
64
That's quite a big incentive.
65
There's nothing to buy, no bed to make, no washing to do.
66
You do need quite a kind and generous mother or father to be able to live like that.
67
Yeah, that's true.
68
The type of parents you have may influence your decision to stay at home too.
69
Alberto also mentioned there were no taxes or bills to pay, which is great if you're not earning any money.
70
Yes, and this is, of course, the reality for many young people in Spain.
71
But if you have no choice about living at home, hopefully you at least have a good relationship with your parents.
72
Now, this means accepting their virtues, their good points and their faults.
73
Yes, after all, it is their home.
74
Spoken like a true parent, Rob.
75
Behave, Finn.
76
And let's see if you answer today's question correctly.
77
I asked you, according to the UK's Office for National Statistics, in 2013, what percentage of 20 to 34-year-olds were living at home with their parents?
78
I seem to remember, five and a half minutes ago, saying C, 36%.
79
Well, you're wrong.
80
The answer is 26%.
81
Oh, no. That's 3.3 million adults.
82
That's an increase of about 25% since 1996.
83
Well, that's it for this programme.
