1
Hello my friends, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy.
2
Haha, new name, new look.
3
But I'm still here to help you speak better English and prepare for the IELTS Speaking Test.
4
So today we're going to be looking at the topic of homes.
5
Not Sherlock homes, but homes as in houses, flats, apartments, accommodation.
6
We'll be looking at how you can speak confidently and fluently on this topic.
7
Let's do it.
8
So as I mentioned, I'm still here to help you prepare for the IELTS Speaking Test.
9
All of my material now is moving to the new website www.keithspeakingacademy.com.
10
Check me out there.
11
First of all, though, what is the difference between home and house?
12
In some languages, it's the same word.
13
Well, very simply, a house is a building.
14
It's a physical place where you live.
15
A home is much more than that, right?
16
It's a place often you associate with family, with feelings, with emotion, a sense of belonging.
17
So the house is just the building.
18
The home is where you...
19
It's the house and everything else around it, the emotion and feeling.
20
Great.
21
Now, watching this video is great, but it would be even better if you could practice the language with a teacher.
22
somebody to give you feedback and encouragement as you're doing it.
23
And what better place than Cambly?
24
Cambly have a great online platform with native English speakers.
25
They're professional teachers who can help you.
26
You can practice speaking with them.
27
You can practice IELTS questions and they can give you feedback.
28
You can choose the teacher anytime, any teacher that you like.
29
The classes can be recorded.
30
You can chat with each other.
31
It's great.
32
What's more, Cambly have actually got some new online courses, which look fantastic.
33
So you can go and check them out as well.
34
So thank you very much to Cambly who are actually sponsoring this video.
35
Really appreciate it.
36
Go and check them out.
37
And when you go to Cambly, remember to use the discount code to get your discount on all of their packages, keith-disc.
38
All the links are down below.
39
Great.
40
With that, let's get into the lesson.
41
So I wonder, what kind of accommodation do you live in?
42
Many people live in a house or some kind of a house, right?
43
So we can have a detached house, which is a house that is just on its own.
44
Some people live in a semi-detached house, often called a townhouse in American English, like this.
45
Some people may live in a terraced house, a bit like this, where the houses are all joined together in a row, very common in a lot of areas of England.
46
Some people live in a house that only has one floor.
47
My dad actually lives in a house like this and it's called a bungalow.
48
Looks a bit like this.
49
Now you may live in a flat or an apartment, in which case the building you live in could be a block of flats or an apartment block.
50
Sometimes when it's quite luxurious or more expensive, it's called a condominium.
51
And just generally, you could say a high-rise building, especially if there's like, you know, 15, 20, 30 floors.
52
Some of these big high-rise buildings.
53
And then inside, you've got your flat or your apartment.
54
To be honest, these words are used very much the same with the same meaning.
55
We can talk about, for example, a two bedroom flat or a three bedroom flat.
56
Right?
57
So we could say, you know, if somebody says, what kind of accommodation do you live in?
58
Well, I live in a three bedroom flat on the sixth floor of a seven story building.
59
That's actually where I live.
60
Notice when we say a seven-story building, seven-story is like an adjective, so it doesn't take an S, right?
61
We don't say seven-stories building.
62
No, a seven-story building.
63
I live in a 20-story building.
64
I live in a nine-story building.
65
And then you can say the floor, I live on the second floor, the third floor, the fourth floor, and so on.
66
Right.
67
Excellent.
68
If you're a student, it may be that you live in rented accommodation or a rented house, or you rent a room in a house or a flat.
69
Right.
70
Very often, students may be in a studio or in England, we call it a bedsit.
71
which is really it's one room where you have the bed, the kitchen and everything together except the bathroom
72
which will be the toilet will be kind of separate normally or attached to that room.
73
Generally speaking you can say as a student I live in student accommodation or more colloquially I live in student digs.
74
Digs just means accommodation probably a student hat, hat, hat, a student hat, no, a student house or a student flat.
75
Rented house, rented flat.
76
Great.
77
Now that's all well and good.
78
But if people ask you, you know, do you like where you live?
79
You want to be thinking about collocations.
80
So adjectives that go together to describe where you live.
81
So speaking positively, you could say, I live in a really comfy flat on the seventh floor of a high-rise building.
82
A really comfy flat.
83
Comfy just means comfortable.
84
You could also say, I live in a spacious flat.
85
Spacious meaning with lots of space or room, right?
86
I live in a spacious flat.
87
Notice the stress on the key adjective word, right?
88
Repeat with me.
89
I live in a spacious flat.
90
We almost hesitate, right?
91
I live in a spacious flat.
92
It's like you're going up and hitting the word spacious or stressing the word, right?
93
Listen again.
94
I live in a spacious flat.
95
Try another one.
96
I live in a comfy flat.
97
Or even, I live in a spacious and comfy flat.
98
Great.
99
Another nice word is cosy.
100
A cosy flat.
101
Cosy just means small and comfortable, right?
102
This is a very cosy flat.
103
In fact, if you want to be polite, right, you go to somebody's flat and it's really small, you can say, oh, it's really cosy flat.
104
It means it's small but comfortable.
105
However, if it's small and uncomfortable, we would say it's cramped, right?
106
Cramped with that P.
107
Try that one.
108
It's a bit of a cramped flat.
109
Notice we add the it's a bit of a to make it more natural.
110
It's a bit of a cramped flat.
111
It's a bit of a cramped flat.
112
Now, you wouldn't say that to your friend, but you might say it about your own place, right?
113
Well, it's a nice flat.
114
I live on the sixth floor, but it's a bit of a cramped flat.
115
Other negative things, of course, might be noisy, right?
116
The neighbours are so noisy, right?
117
It's a bit of a cramped flat.
118
The neighbours are really noisy.
119
I don't like it very much.
120
It is funny sometimes.
121
I notice with students when I ask them, do you like your house?
122
Sometimes they say, yes, it has a kitchen.
123
It has a lounge.
124
It has a dining area.
125
I have two bedrooms.
126
And they start listing the rooms in the house.
127
Now, that's nice to show that you know that vocabulary, but it's not really telling me what you like about the house.
128
It would be much better to say, what I really like about my house is the living room.
129
It's nice and spacious and really comfy.
130
Right?
131
Picking out one room
132
and maybe saying what I really like is da da da da right try
133
that with me what I really like is you notice the
134
hmm what I really like is great what I really like is the lounge
135
which is nice and comfy and really spacious right
136
so focus on what you like
137
if somebody asks you what you like don't give them a list of the rooms
138
that will show you're a beginner student let's move on
139
so there are some nice collocations we can use to describe different parts of the house, right?
140
For example, if your bedroom has a bathroom attached to the bedroom, we call that an en-suite bathroom.
141
Sometimes when you go to a hotel, you often have an en-suite bathroom.
142
There are different bedrooms.
143
And of course, the biggest bedroom normally for the parents, unless your children are controlling you is the master bedroom.
144
That's the big one that may have a king size bed or a queen size bed.
145
Now, that doesn't mean there's a bed for the woman and a bed for the man.
146
It just means the size.
147
The king size bed is the bigger one.
148
Queen size bed is still pretty big, but maybe not as big.
149
Moving into the kitchen, quite fashionable nowadays, especially in America and the UK, is to have an open plan kitchen, right?
150
An open plan kitchen.
151
When I was living in China, we didn't have an open plan kitchen because I think very often cooking in the kitchen,
152
people like to fry and all the fumes come out and you want to close that door, right?
153
Otherwise, all the fumes and the smoke is going to come into the living area or the dining area.
154
Whereas I guess nowadays, especially in England, we tend to fry less.
155
Many families fry less because of the move towards a healthier lifestyle and healthier eating.
156
So this kind of open plan kitchen is great if you're not frying a lot.
157
And it looks really good, right?
158
You've got this, what we call the island in the middle.
159
It's like a little table where you can prepare the food.
160
And then you've got your stove to cook on or the oven if you're going to do, you know, roast chicken or something like that.
161
So kitchens and that kind of kitchen, I would say it has a modern look.
162
Right.
163
So you may want to say what I like about my flat.
164
Right.
165
Is the kitchen.
166
We have this wonderful, spacious, open plan kitchen.
167
And it's got a really modern look.
168
We've even got a little island in the middle for food preparation.
169
It's great.
170
You even have to say it's great at the end. So the kitchen.
171
What about the living area?
172
So maybe the living area, nice and spacious.
173
Again, living areas might have comfy sofas with fluffy cushions.
174
maybe you've got fluffy cushions it could be a colorful room
175
or a room full of contrasting colors right and probably with a few decorations or ornaments on the bookshelves on the tables
176
decorations could be you know pictures hanging on the wall it could be ornaments plants
177
table lamps floor lamps all of
178
that stuff you might even have a rug right on the floor often next to the coffee table
179
or next to the sofa people have a rug on the floor especially
180
if you've got a tiled floor
181
which can be quite cold a rug makes it warmer in england many many houses have carpets on the floor.
182
So from one wall to another wall, completely covering the floor, that is a carpet.
183
Super fluffy, super warm, especially in the winter.
184
And of course you could say a well-lit living room.
185
If you've got lots of light coming through, you may have a French window.
186
Those windows that open out like a door onto the garden, if you have a garden,
187
or onto your balcony, if you're lucky enough to have a balcony where you can sit outside
188
and have a cup of tea.
189
Nice, eh?
190
Moving on.
191
Sometimes people may ask you about your accommodation.
192
How long have you live there or have you always lived there
193
and here well if you ask me
194
that I would say actually I've been living here for about three years now
195
and I used to live in another country country x
196
and there we lived in a condominium we had quite a
197
spacious flat I remember it was on the 20th floor of a really high-rise building.
198
I remember it because I got a bit nervous standing on the balcony so high up.
199
But now where we live, well, we're on the sixth floor and it's a smaller flat but really comfy.
200
And what I like most about it is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
201
Or you may be honest and right and say, well, actually, where I live now, it's not as spacious as before.
202
It's a nice comparison.
203
Not as spacious as before.
204
Not as as before.
205
And if the truth be told, it's a little bit cramped.
206
if the truth be told.
207
It's a nice expression just to say you're being frank and you're telling the truth.
208
Or it's like, to be honest, it's a little bit cramp.
209
Or to tell you the truth, it's a little bit cramp.
210
So all of these expressions mean to be honest or frankly speaking, right?
211
To tell you the truth.
212
If the truth be told, between you and me, it's a bit like a secret, right?
213
Between you and me, it's a little bit cramped.
214
Frankly speaking, it's a little bit cramped.
215
So a nice expression you can use to introduce something that maybe is a bit negative about where you live.
216
Other useful comparison language could be It's much bigger than where we are now
217
There was far more room where we used to live It was just way more spacious where we were before
218
it had a lot more mod cons than what we have now
219
mod cons just means modern comforts
220
so the mod cons of a flat are normally the air
221
conditioning the tv the oven the stove the central heating the things the modern things
222
that give you comfort in a flat, right?
223
So typically we can say it has all the mod cons, right?
224
You would expect a modern flat to have all the mod cons and to be fully furnished, probably.
225
Brilliant.
226
So this is how we can talk about homes and houses, flats and apartments.
227
I hope this helps.
228
What about you?
229
What is your home like?
