1
(orchestral music) (audience applauding) - My name is Vinay Parameswaran.
2
I am the Associate Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra.
3
(random instruments tuning) What is an orchestra?
4
(various instrument music) An orchestra is an ensemble of multiple musicians with many different instruments.
5
Now, the great thing about the orchestra is that we can have different sizes.
6
There are orchestras that are quite small only about, say 15 players.
7
And then we can also have orchestras that are humongous with over 100 musicians on stage.
8
What makes an orchestra unique is that an orchestra can play all kinds of music from classical to jazz, to opera, to rock.
9
You, name it.
10
An orchestra can play music that was written as far back as 300 years ago, all the way to music that is being written today.
11
(string instrument player plucking) What does a conductor do?
12
We have a lot of musicians on stage in an orchestra.
13
Think of the orchestra like a team and the conductor is like the coach of that team.
14
(audience applauding) And it's the conductor's job to bring the composer's vision to life.
15
Think of the great composers like Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven.
16
("Beethoven's 5th Symphony") It's not like we can email them and ask them, "Hey, what did you mean when you wrote this?" What's so wonderful about this music is that great conductors can interpret this music in wildly different ways.
17
And that's why you never know what you're about to hear when you go hear the orchestra.
18
(xylophone music) Why does a conductor hold a baton?
19
(baton tapping) Well, an orchestra with maybe over 100 musicians there's some musicians who are very far away from the conductor, way in the back of the stage.
20
And they are now able to see exactly what a conductor is showing.
21
Conductor shows many things all at once.
22
Conductor shows time, where all the beats are in the music.
23
(rhythmic music) But a conductor shows so many more things than that.
24
We can show how loud or how soft the music is.
25
Things that we call dynamics.
26
(loud orchestral music) We can also show different characters and emotions in this music.
27
(gentle orchestral music) (boisterous music) (audience cheering) Singers, characters, heroes, and the heartbeat.
28
The orchestra is organized into four major sections.
29
Strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
30
The strings are the singers of the orchestra because they can sing the most beautiful melodies.
31
(various string instrument music) The woodwinds are the actors of the orchestra because they can portray all kinds of different characters.
32
(various woodwind music) The regal sounding brass are the heroes of the orchestra.
33
Think of the music that you would hear if a king or queen were to make an entrance.
34
Or maybe those brass fanfares you hear while watching the Olympic games.
35
(trumpet music) The percussion with its driving rhythms are the heartbeat or the engine of the orchestra.
36
(drum music) We will explore each of these instruments families, one by one.
37
We will learn about the different instruments in each family, how they are alike, how they are different, how they make their sound, and all the special things that they can do in the orchestra.
38
We will also learn about the amazing magic that happens when all of these instruments come together.
39
Come join me on this journey.
40
(sweeping orchestral music)
