3
Let's begin.
4
Chapter 12.
5
Pettypalm's Banquet.
6
Part 2.
7
Stepping outside, Rudabug placed two fingers together and gave a sharp whistle.
8
Moments later, Hamilton arrived at the plum tree and offered to ferry the two gnomes back to the picnic.
9
Rudabug and Pettypalm climbed aboard,
10
and together they set off down the tree to cross the field.
11
When they arrived, Rudabug helped Pettypalm off Hamilton's back,
12
settled him onto the blanket,
13
and immediately offered him some food.
14
noting the exchange, Thumpkin asked, Is everything all right?
15
Pettypum had run out of food,
16
Rudabug replied plainly, but I'll be taking him down to my root cellar to restock his cupboards.
17
A good gnome you are,
18
said Puddlebloom, and a good friend too, added Thumpkin.
19
Pettypum looked up, speechless.
20
He didn't know Rudabug was going to restock his pantry.
21
Mr. Squail, said Rudabug, turning to Hamilton,
22
would you be willing to assist me?
23
I'll load the baskets if you can carry them up to his plum tree.
24
It would be my pleasure,
25
said Hamilton, tipping his hat.
26
Wonderful, said Rudabug.
27
Please take Petty Palm and follow me to the root cellar.
28
Petty Palm climbed back onto Hamilton's back,
29
and together they followed Rudabug over to the garden beds.
30
Well, said Thumpkin, turning to Puddlebloom,
31
I think we ought to do something too.
32
Indeed, agreed Puddlebloom, the young gnome does try so very hard.
33
What did you have in mind?
34
Let's throw him a banquet tonight, Thumpkin said with resolve.
35
Puddlebloom raised his eyebrows, almost impressed.
36
And here I thought your beard couldn't get any longer.
37
Do you think we can pull it off before they return?
38
Most certainly, said Thumpkin.
39
Well then, said Puddle Bloom.
40
Let's get to it.
41
So while Rootabug and Hamilton were busy restocking Pettypom's cupboards,
42
Thumpkin and Puddle Bloom were secretly preparing a feast just around the corner.
43
No detail was spared.
44
Every effort was made to lift the young gnome's spirits and to celebrate him as a cherished member of their family.
45
Meanwhile, down in Rootabug's root cellar,
46
Petty Pom stood in quiet amazement as basket after basket was filled with food and carried up the ladder to his home.
47
There were potatoes, carrots and cabbages,
48
and even apples and a few extra jars of strawberry jam.
49
One, two, three, four, five, he counted.
50
watching as Rudabug handed each basket to Hamilton,
51
who dutifully ferried them back to the plum tree.
52
How much food is Rudabug going to give me? he wondered.
53
Though a part of him still felt guilty for running out,
54
as he experienced Rudabug's overwhelming generosity,
55
the guilt began to melt away.
56
That should do it, said Rudabug, wiping his hands.
57
I don't know what to say.
58
Thank you is all that needs to be said, replied Rudabug kindly.
59
With hands clasped and a heart full,
60
Pettypop offered the most sincere thank you he had ever given.
61
Thank you.
62
Rudabug was pleased.
63
You're quite welcome, he said with a smile.
64
Now, he said, placing a hand on Petty Palm's shoulder,
65
let's go see what the others have been up to.
66
After Hamilton had delivered the last basket,
67
they returned to the picnic area,
68
only it was no longer a picnic, but a beautiful banquet.
69
it.
70
Dinner is served, announced Thumpkin.
71
And dessert, added Puddlebloom, revealing a platter of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
72
With a smile, he pulled out a chair and gestured for Pettypalm to take a seat.
73
What's all of this?
74
Pettypalm asked, eyes wide with wonder and confusion.
75
A celebration, said Thumpkin.
76
For what?
77
Pettypalm asked even more puzzled.
78
For you, said Thumpkin with a smile.
79
Then without another word, he began to sing.
80
When we're feeling all alone,
81
on winter nights at home,
82
nothing helps our hearts to mend.
83
Like comfort from a friend Good friends who bring us food When we're feeling blue
84
Good friends who never leave your side Even when we hide
85
The party took their seats,
86
and Thumpkin raised his glass.
87
To Petipom, may you never forget that you are always welcome at our table.
88
Then Rootabug stood.
89
and may you remember that your value here is not measured by what you do,
90
but who you are.
91
Today, said Puddlebloom joining them,
92
we remind you of all the privileges of our kinship.
93
May your beard come forth and grow ever long,
94
so long as father's son shines down upon us.
95
And Newsom, they raised their glass Do Petty Pom Do Petty Pom
